This was the first time Kurosawa had done a film in colour so he had a great time experminting with different colours in the film.

Incidentally, it's based on a historical event (Battle of Nagashino). One of the most important and famous events in Japanese history. The tragedy was very real.

Because it's based on real history, RAN is based on Shakespeare's epic and so a fictional sengoku period war movie (like game of thrones)
