I never saw Ume-chan's comments as excusable because he's handsome. I think he started saying these things *because* he wanted to break out of his ikemen image, which I believe has been a huge influence on his career so far (he's been limited to ikemen roles for the longest time, leading a few fans to assume he's a one-note performer...)
Those mostly come from japanese commenters. From what I see, the intl fandom are either; so done with him and not surprised anymore or just think he’s amusing lol
@@konpeisubs korean fandom is actually worse. I saw many comments blacklashing him bcs of raeliana anime when they asked about him they attrached a korean wiki blog naming all his "scandals" when it's just him saying shimoneta on radio.

I think this might be the case. Probably in his early days he was pushed into the ikemen role, as if he's straight out from an otome game. Talking like a pervert old man probably allows him to break out from this image and show other sides of him, as if he's saying he's a human and not a doll.
Literally almost 3/4 of this video is Nishiyama being so done with how unfiltered Ume-chan is 💀💀💀

Ume is cool, he's talented and definitely his jokes aren't excusable bcs "he's handsome". He's more than a pretty face and his acting & singing skills are good too! He's just a man honest with himself trying to break his ikemen image.

Sometimes I wondered that kind of ume-chan is part of fan service where he shaped himself as 'ordinary man' or where he represents himself as 'common type of man' despite his involvement of entertainment industry. We have same thought, as I even asked myself, is he really pardonable only because he's handsome? I don't think so. Personally there are some embarrassing moments (if anyone remember about some event where he did ikemen pose) which might be funny for some ppl or on his part, he tried to entertain the fans in his way. It's unfair to label him bad with his dirty jokes, since there are some other older seiyuu also famous for their dirty talk like Sugita-san. Putting that aside, if you watch other seiyuu event like quizzes or anime talk, Ume-chan has my respect. He has good answer choice as it's kinda like pop quiz, it might be truly from how he genuinely feels. Honestly I'd like to know what's their dislike and like, not only the perfect side they showed so far. Seiyuu live event imo helps a lot with that, seeing them having fun is sort of entertainment for me. In ume-chan's case, I guess men will be men...

Kinda reminds me of a certain show of male seiyuu with most the fanbase being girls and then one of them started to talk about love live's app gacha and then all the members followed by saying they too were interested in the game, resulting in them talking about it more in the show, to going to live show and etc. This resulted in an unexpected rise of male audience that related for their "oshi".

Honestly speaking, I believe that Umehara is too much. There’s time and place for everything. It doesn’t matter why he’s saying those things. People say it’s fun because he’s handsome but I don’t see him as handsome precisely because says stuff like that. A lot of time it’s not even about what he says but rather HOW he says it. He brings those jokes with a negative connotation as well.
you're right there's time and place for that. but he only did that in this radio show hyorotto & fubu radio (both have same staff), only around men. the said jokes usually only involves himself and never towards or about others (such as asking inappropriate question to opposite gender esp).
about his face...well, it's not like he can change it. the point is, there are ppl out there who think we think it's accepted bcs of his pretty privilege. perhaps it is true to a certain extent. but ume fans actually think he's breaking the handsome guy stereotype, men (not all men yea ofc) say dirty jokes despite their looks. I personally like him bcs of his unbothered attitude. If he's just a pretty man without the ume personality that he has shown us so far, I don't think I will be a fan.
