I was in my closet right up the street from you and never saw this but heard it, the most frightening thing I've ever experienced, thanks for the video
Absolutely amazing footage, David! You really had an incredible experience going through the back-half of Ian in your vehicle! Thanks for sharing such an awesome documentary!
Those trees have some deep roots! When the winds picked up during the back eyewall, I thought for sure we'd see some trees toppled. Even in the soggy wet ground, the roots stood firm. Brave Floridians all of you! Everyone who survived that storm should be very proud of yourselves. That hurricane was no joke!
Let's hear it for that Shoe Repair sign !!! just build houses by the guy that made that sign... all jokes aside, great video of a horrible storm. was watching Idelia footage and stumbled on this
I watch these storm videos and I have to comment that this is awesome work you did. I for the first time feel like I went through a hurricane awesome work.
Thank you for the video. Please be careful out there! SW Florida is still trying to get back to normal. It’s been a rough 7 months. There are many houses with damages (insurance companies completely screwed most of us).
Amazing video! Kudos to the team who filmed this! I've watched countless videos and this is the one that comes the closest to showing the raw power of this storm. That took some real brass to sit out there in the middle of it. The worst of the back eye-wall (6:30 to 8:30 in the video) was shot exactly 4.0 miles due south of me. I'm in North Port, just above the Port Charlotte line. It scared the daylights out of me. I was one of the lucky ones with only about 6000 in damages, mostly to my truck which I had parked sideways in front of the garage door. I will say this ... I will NOT ride out another hurricane. If we are targeted in the future, I will do all the hurricane prep, grab the pets, and head inland to get away from it. There were times during the 5:30PM to 7:30PM window where I was certain I was going to lose my home, if not my life. Pretty scary stuff.
Arthur, thank you for your comment. I am glad to hear you went through it with minor damage. Yes, this hurricane was a powerful one. We are trying our best to document the raw power or hurricanes, so people know what to expect when they are in a hurricane warning zone. Thank you for watching.
That was the most insane thing about this hurricane -- the back eye wall is _never_ that strong, let alone more fearsome than the front right eye wall. On top of that it was a huge hurricane that did this to so many areas. Those back wall gusts seemed to never end and it was absolutely brutal to go through. Glad you guys made it to tell us about it!
We're in SE Cape Coral, after enduring a number of hurricane's since moving here in the early 2000's, I'll never stay again. I'm 58yo, storms don't typically scare me much having been through some bad one's already, but, Ian, yeah, never again.
Here in Port Charlote, in the peak of the storm our shed tore loose from its foundation and lifted up in the air. I thought it was going to hit the neighbor's house so I ran outside to try and drag it down. Right in front of me it tore to shreds and just blew away without hitting the house. Then I had to belly crawl back into our house because so much debris was in the air it was beating the heck out of me if I was standing up. I was cut and bruised from getting hit by stuff.
Awesome footage! I couldn't have possibly been outside during those conditions. Kudos on a well-documented hit. We'll take full dimension of IAN's historical importance over the years. iFeliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo, David!
I lived through that shit show videos will never do it justice sustained winds of 150 to 165 miles an hour winds with gusts of 205 miles an hour for 9 hours at least in Charlotte County measured by many weather stations including police I will never stay for another hurricane again it has changed my life forever
The mass of rain on the western side brought hell down with it. Kinda wild how the back half being worst than the first is conditional on SO many variables.
I didn't get the opportunity to chase Ian. I did Michael in 18 and that was insane. I did manage to drive out to Punta Gorda after though and my goodness, what a mess. Some roads were impassable while others you had to just crawl through and hope you didn't rupture a tire. Trailer parks completely destroyed, flipped over like they were toys. People's belongings scattered everywhere. It is very sad seeing people's livelihoods and homes destroyed. Pray for those who have lost it all. May they make a speedy and full recovery
As we enter into 2023 hurricane season which could be another dangerous one, I'm watching replay of Ian if for nothing else then getting in the mindset. Live on Atlantic Coast on the Mid Atlantic region and we've had a few damaging ones. I urge everyone to please heed the warnings, these aren't your grandparents storms anymore 🙏
When all hell breaks loose for you two, and a tree or a building comes tumbling through your windshield and leaves you both severely hurt, what do you guys do.....? This footage is incredible but I've never understood the logistics of all of this lol
Meanwhile, the palm trees native to this area remain standing. After Hurricanes Michael and Ian these same palms were amazingly still in place, and alive, in the midst of total wreckage and debris all around them.
There's always someone who just has to get out into it. We had hurricane parties instead. When the eye was upon us, we'd walk out to the front yard, enjoy the brief calm, then high tail it back to safety. To date, we've seen 6 solid hurricanes, including Ian, Andrew, and Charlie. The stuff of "shock and awe." ...Live smart, and be ever ready.
"I am patiently waiting for a break between wind gusts to safely make a turn"--in a hurricane eye wall. Had a hearty laugh there. Was that intentional comedy?
Thank you for your comment. It is funny but I actually was waiting for a break. Inside the Eyewall, There is always some breaks between the wind gust. The wind is not necessarily constantly blowing at +100mph. In the case of IAN, he wind was always fluctuating between 60, 70, 100 or 145. To answer your question, yes I did waited until I felt the wind slow down a little. BTW, I had anemometer installed on my truck, so I was monitoring the wind speeds. At the time of the turn the wind was 70mph prior to the turn they was gusting to 94mph. A little while after I was measuring 102 mph. The highest wind I didn’t measured because I was sheltering behind the building. My highest wind measurement was 102mph at 8ft elevation from the ground.
it was an unintentional comedy. For me it was one of the most stressful moment or the chase. As you can see in the video minutes later (minute 7.37) we felt the strongest wind from the Eyewall. I am not sure what would have happened if I had stayed on the highway. When I turned I was behind the trees you can see on minute 7.37.
We just finished the repairs to our home in Port Charlotte. No thanks to insurance - all money out of our pockets. I guess you pay to live in paradise.
The back side intensity was the surprise, because usually after landfall the hurricane weakens rapidly and the back side is not as intense and dryer but in Ian wast different. The back side of Ian was equally or more intense than the front side of the Eye at least that’s what we experienced in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. Thank you for your comment!
Great footage, but you were in the wrong county. You were in Charlotte County, but Lee County had half the fatalities from hurricane Ian. The killer was storm surge not the wind
Yes, Never safe to be under trees inside a hurricane!!! I wasn’t under trees.maybe jus a couple of seconds but didn’t stayed under trees. I always try to avoid driving near trees during a hurricane chase.
