Thank you so much. My parents dragged me to piano lessons 23 years ago. As soon as I was old enough to join the concert band at school, I ditched the keys in favor of the trumpet. After that, I picked up playing bass in jazz band. And then i learned to play the guitar for a punk rock band i started with a few other knuckleheads from school. Piano was the only instrument that I completely stopped playing (it was also the only instrument that I didn't choose to play from the beginning).
Fast forward a few decades and I am kicking myself for not maintaining even the most basic piano skills hahah...
I love this song and always thought the piano sounded simple enough to learn. I almost figured out the chords. Well, I actually did figure it was just octaves but I kept doubting myself and thought "there has to be a fifth, right? You can't just play octaves. There's gotta be a fifth... " But it never ended up sounding quite right. It sounded Ok, but I wasn't feeling it and I gave up. I guess rock music made me believe that every chord needed a fifth haha
Your tutorial is very well-paced and it was just what I needed to follow along. I can't quite keep the steadiest rhythm yet, but I am sure I'll get it down even if i just practice a few minutes per day. I think that if I can nail this song, I'll have the confidence to start learning more.

One of the best piano piece in a rock song.

Agreed. "I'm so tired" by Fugazi is another great piano-centric rock song. Not sure what a pianist would think about these songs, but I think piano sounds great on a simple, bare bones arrangement. Its such a versatile instrument.

Cool video but it's a pity you didn't explain more precisely what the right hand was supposed to do during the verse.

Hey I'm pretty new to the piano and really want to learn this song. I'm a little confused by the right hand melody during the verse and chorus. Do you kind of just improvise with the B, D#, and G# notes or is there a specific way to play them? Hope that question makes sense, thanks so much for the tutorial

Holden Rutledge Hello Holden. During the verses, 1:37 is the most accurate copy of what he plays. I am kind of making up the rhythm, as I couldn't hear a specific pattern.
During the Chorus, the melody is played along with the words ("love each other so, androgynous"). And in between the first and second half of the chorus, play the B, D#, G# as a solid chord on the and of beat 1, on beat 3, and again on the and of beat 3. This then leads into the second half of the chorus ("closer than you know") where the melody is again played with the vocals, and then after he stops singing, the right hand plays note for note as in 4:04.
      Does this answer your question?

Do you think this song was originally played in C, and the tape slowed down to put it in B? I just saw a video with Paul playing it live on guitar in C (although he apparently has his guitar tuned down 1/2 step)

The key of C WOULD be a lot easier to play on piano...😂 Unfortunately I'd never heard of this song before making this video. I learned it for a friend from the first recording I found, which was in B. No idea other than that!

Great video, but please bear in mind Paul Westerberg played this very 'loosely' and there's no right or wrong way to play it
