Why do I stitch? Because I can make poetry with colored string; because I never have to give store bought gifts; because I can escape into what I am creating; because of the joy it gives me to be around others who find the same joy I do in doing the same thing. I am so grateful for the skill that God gave me and how I can share it with others. Thank you for sharing your love with me.

I have always said, my hands need to be busy, that is why I stitch, knit, or quilt. But it definitely is soothing. Love your content. I’m always learning, or being enabled. Both are good.

I didn’t mean to leave the impression that people change how they stitch to produce more content, but, at least for me, it is always in the back of my mind. . . . should I rotate more, will it be boring if I show the same thing, etc.
But in the end, I try and stitch what is speaking to me at the time and what I am enjoying.
I appreciate that you enjoy seeing what I show, no matter what it is. 🙂
I may be the odd critter in the world, but I love to see progression on the same projects, that makes me relate to people more, because that is what the craft is, a slow progression on something satisfying.

I appreciate another lovely flosstube, Karen! Personally, I don’t like flosstubers to “create content”. I like to see what people do in their natural course of their crossstitching journey. If they stitch and have work to show-wonderful! If they have haul that they would’ve bought even if they weren’t a flosstuber-great! If there are historical or teaching moments or retreat stories-perfect! If it’s every two weeks or six weeks, it’s fine, as long as you want to show us what ya got 😁😁. Don’t put pressure on yourselves and just show us what you do. That way, your love for the craft comes across genuinely. Happy June ❤.

I tend to be a monogamous stitcher, and sometimes you just need a break. This is when I pick out a small project that I can complete in a week 😊

Why do I stitch? I stitch because that it brings me joy, peace, purpose, a sense of creating and belonging to a wonderful community, it is a time for prayer, meditation, memories and all things good in a world that sometime seems filled with crazy. It is cheaper than any therapy and I love being at home and pulling a needle through fabric and watching a piece of art coming to life! I too have notebooks full of Flosstube notes! But after about 3 years of that, I realized that I could use that time to get more stitching done....funny how we are always evolving in our craft, gaining ground, and confidence to create more & more!! Thank you for sharing your time & talent with us and for mentioning Melissa of Pinker 'n' Punkin...I have stitched soooo many of her saltbox charts and need to set aside a week or two to do the FFOing on the last 20 or so! Hey Karen...great question! I have stitched on something ever since I was a young girl. My grandmother taught me many disciplines...knitting, crochet, needlepoint, crewel work, and embroidery of all sorts. So sewing/knitting has always been a part of what I enjoy doing for relaxation and creativity. It has never been a necessity so much as a joy in my day! The choice of materials and patterns, as you know, is a big part of the enjoyment of the process. I am very tactical and enjoy the different textures, weaves, and colorways of all kinds of fabric, thread, and yarns. I don't remember a time when I did not stitch....so thankful for a grandmother who introduced me to such wonderful pastimes. I have given many things away, taught many knitting students, and love to share my knowledge and abilities with others. More things, though, are decor in my home, however, as I love living with the things I have created too. Many thanks for the video!

Wow! Your discussion & question about why we stitch…really gives me pause …it is meditative for me and, if I’m not stitching every day, I feel “out of sorts”…it brings me joy and makes me calm & happy. I’m fortunate my husband understands this too! Thank you for for your flosstube - they are so enjoyable! And, like you, when I found flosstubes, I started taking notes…to the point where I now have an excel sheet cataloging charts I have, noting if I have the floss and/or linen, start & finish dates ( if done), a wish list, a page with shops, websites, etc. I update & print this regularly and put in my Book of Days ( I have it spiral bound with sheet protectors I can slide the excel sheets into). I also made a section noting when I purchase supplies, the date, from whom, and what for; a section where I log the flosstubes I watch with dates & notes; and my contact sheet of people I’ve met at retreats. I’ll show you the next time I see you at a retreat! And, by the way, got my linen for Sarah Milthorp so, she’s a start! But put her down after a few stitches because I need to finish Hannah Wilson…I ‘m just not there yet in having WIPs! Guess that’s why I’m hesitant to create flosstubes - being a monogamous stitcher could make for boring content! Take care til next time!❤️

I did the spreadsheet for one series of charts that I have and found it helpful. Now I have enough charts that I've decided to make a spreadsheet for all of my charts. I have a text listing for a wish list but a spreadsheet would be far more useful. Great idea for noting details on purchases of supplies. That would be so handy to be able to just look it up instead digging through the materials in hopes to finding what I want.

Thanks for another excellent episode! I immediately got online to buy the DAR exhibit catalog and am looking forward to seeing the other treasures inside.
I make things because I’m inspired to (more like compelled to! 🤭) Over the years I’ve found that working with a needle and thread in my hands is my happy place-whether it is cross stitching, or beading, or piecing a quilt. It is a way to destress after a busy day at work and very meditative.
Such a lovely visit with you as always. You're one of the flosstubers I go to for calm and interesting content. As a flosstuber myself I struggle with coming up with things I think would be interesting but ultimately I just go with what is lighting me up at the moment. There's no way for me to tell what people will be drawn to and there are so many video makers out there that I feel there's something for everyone to enjoy. I stitch what makes me happy and I stitch for the calm it brings my heart. Also much of what we do is cyclical... you do the laundry and it needs to be done again in a few days, clean the house -same thing - but with stitching I'm working towards something that will have a tangible finish and give me a sense of control in an out of (my) control world. Thank you for sharing your stitching and keeping me company today! 🌻🌺🌹

Crossstitching brings me comfort and joy! What works for me is working on a larger project and switching to a smaller project when I want to "change gears". I have 3 WIPS-that is what works for me. I was happy to see "Shores of Hawk Run Hollow"! It is my large project. Decided to choose 9 blocks and rearrange them. I have changed a few things to personalize the piece. For example I changed the color of the skin on the lady to flesh tone, I made the flowers in the sky green to reflect my Scot-Irish heritage as they looked like 4 leaf clovers. And another example is adding initials of family members. I watched a floss tube that had changed them but can't remember the name.

I enjoy x-stitching for it's meditative quality and for how I might display it. I returned to stitching just a few years back during the lockdown and i needed to fill the hours at home. It's wonderful to just sew for our own satisfaction.

I stitch for stress relief and a creative outlet. I have never drawn or painted but choosing patterns and threads and linens and changing up stuff uses my creative parts! In my retirement from the classroom it also gives me a place to keep learning.

I really appreciate your Flosstube and all the others that do them. Although, my wallet would be fatter without them. 🤣 On a serious note, I have learned so much from everyone. My husband hears me listen to Flosstubes and he has tried to get me to make one. My answer is always "I stitch to slow and I would not have enough content." I have the chart GH1857 but have never kitted it up because I struggle with choosing fabric, especially when some of the thread color looks almost the same as the fabric. I'm going to look into the Gloriana Silks, I have never used them before. I love your idea of starting with the smalls. You asked why we stitch. I have always done a multitude of creative things. I love seeing what I'm stitching come to life. There are so many patterns so I can pick what I love and change colors or designs to make them fit me. I love how you changed your Shores of Hawk Run Hollow. It's beautiful and you are making it what you love.

I agree, there is something about taking the blank canvas of linen and floss and then sewing the design coming to life. It’s beautiful and fascinating at the same time.

Why do I stitch? You and I are on the same page with our feelings about stitching. It helps me “escape”. Stitching saved my sanity during my husband’s deployments to Iraq (2004) and Afghanistan (2008). Stitching took me away from worrying for a few hours. It is doing the same thing these days-with all the hate and animosity in our country.

(And thank your husband for his service. My family comes from a long line of those serving in the military, going back to the Revolutionary War. My father was a colonel when he retired, and our daughter is serving in the army reserves now. )

Why do we stitch? I do it for same reason as my mother did and many others; it's for the peace of mind it brings. And many times with my hands engaged, problems seem to solve themselves. It's also a sensual experience with feeling the thread and fabric along with enjoying all the colors in our hands. And it's fun to share either in person or online what's gong on in our personal stitching so it's a way to socialize.
When you started showing the various changes you're making on the "Shores of Hawk Run Hollow," I could totally relate. I don't have the chart yet, but was hesitant because of some parts I didn't care for as made. But then you showed your changes and I thought 'well, I've changed things around in other projects to suit me so why not on a bigger project?' Now, I'll order a chart or two of the Hawk Run Hollow series.
I have a suggestion for one of the problematic boxes: how about adding a fishmonger's shop? It would be easy to pick a house, make a big window to show a few fish, and add a sign that says 'fish.'
Carol, the Saltbox Stitcher, commented on one of her videos that she decided to work Monday through Friday on bigger projects, Saturday for smalls and Sunday on whatever. She chose this 'schedule' because she usually does bigger pieces and wanted to get some of the smalls done. She has found it helpful.
I've looked at the GH 1857 chart but haven't decided upon it yet. I love the designs it has but just hate the colors. I'm not sure I want to spend a lot of time changing the colors to my liking. I have the Ann Dale chart which is a lovely piece but it's done in so many shades of tan and beige which are colors I don't care for so I've slowly been deciding on new colors--slow because it's a large piece.
I enjoy your videos so much. I love how you change things up especially since I don't mind tinkering with things myself in either cross stitch, embroidery, quilting or clothing sewing. Don't feel pressured to put out a video on a tight schedule. If you make it pleasing to you, it will be pleasing to the viewers. Until next time, happy stitching!

Like you, I have to make and I also must always learn. The fiber arts has satisfied both because there is always something else to learn - a new technique, a new stitch, or a new fiber. Now I’m trying to mix things together - spinning my own thread, weaving my own yarns etc. Life goals are to spin for a Niebling and spinning, weaving and sewing a vest or jacket for my husband. I’m also currently dyeing my own fiber to spin yarn for a Fair Isle vest for myself. There is never a shortage of things to work on! And I am very happy just seeing your progress as you feel ready to share including any quilting or knitting. I’m also fine with shorter flosstubes if there isn’t a lot new. You have some gorgeous things in your WIP pile!

Stitching is so peaceful to me. And very interesting that you should mention Liberty Hill shop. Three friends and I are leaving in two days for vacation to Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. I have already planned to go to Liberty Hill and Dyeing to Stitch. None of my friends stitch but they make time for me to go there. They also went with me several years ago to Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Oregon. Aren’t friends wonderful!

Hi Karen, Thank you for your inspiration. I love your modifications on Shores of Hawk Run Hollow. This pattern has never appealed to me, yet I follow so many stitchers working on it enthusiastically. I wish you would elaborate on the counting pins since I recently started stitching on linen and slowly working with silk. The last video from Attic shows many model for Patriotic smalls including American Coast 🥰

What draws me to needlework is a multitude of things. First, I like the solitude of sewing in a busy world.I am a true loving introvert:) And then the idea of creating, working with your hands..the feel of needle and thread,, and finally the final finish...a job well done:)

You know what I love about stitching was/is the solitude! I have always had a job, children and marriage that did take from me and could sometimes leave me at a 10. When I took up my needle it was just my needle and myself.

Karen, what a wonderful visit! Your mention of the DAR Museum reminded me of a visit I got to pay there years ago, and I spent hours looking at the gorgeous quilts displayed. It is a very happy memory. My flosstube magician was Sheri of Colorado Crossstitcher. A blogger, Brenda, mentioned the summer camp Sheri was organizing, so I found her flosstube and was simply mesmerized!!!! I watched every one of her videos and I watch each new one she puts out. Now she has a crossstitch shop! What a beautiful world. I do so appreciate you and all the other bloggers who share their work and thoughts with us. I did watch Jackie and loved that visit. I also had watched the Periwinkle Stitcher…..so grand. There are so many. One just has to give each one a try to see what you really enjoy. You are certainly on that list. I loved your not wanting to stitch on what was at hand and going into your WIPS for your oldest one and following your nose from project to project. I look forward to your next visit! Carol in Texas

I’ve known her for years, back when she owned The Loppy Ewe (yarn shop and quilt shop, both amazing, just as her cross stitch shop is). She and I chatted at Quilt Market while she was there purchasing quilt fabric for her shop. It was such a pleasure to chat with her.

Those patterns you showed towards the end with the American flags on, I always get a chuckle whenever I see those because of how long the flags are. You mentioned blackwork briefly, are you still interested in it? I love blackwork and actually showed the three blackworks I have on the go at the moment in my wip parade, they're not the traditional geometric styler of blackwork that people are used to and I love how the designers have used it to create illustrations.

While not stitching blackwork currently, I have loved it for a very long time. First caught my eye back in the 1970s, when I was a teenager and started doing embroidery and needlepoint. Also loved the tie-in to the Tudor Court and the Holbein paintings.
I've seen some of the more modern blackwork designs using illusions and they are very cool. I haven't stitched any, but I believe I've purchased a few charts.

It’s so nice to visit with you thru Flosstube ….. yesssss I did buy the American Sampler House pattern ( it was hard to find because it was sold out in several shops) and I ordered a Denim Linen that I think will work well with the floss. BUT your thank you to other Flosstubers was precious!! I found Flosstube a couple of years ago when I was under the influence of chemo that made my brain not work …. I knew as soon as I could I would be stitching like I did in the 80’s … now I have waaaaaayyyyy too many projects and I lean towards samplers ….. I am contemplating buying the DAR books you read from …. It’s such a retreat for me to watch and stitch and learn about the history of hand crafts …. Thank You Thank You Thank You ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Great videos. I was wondering where you got your floss wooden cabinet behind you on your lrft side. I’ve been doing counted cross stitch for years and it has in proved so much and much more all round information than from years ago. I follow all your videos and they are very informative. Love all your flosstubes - I have restarted GH1857 twice!! With called for threads - once on 36ct and then again on 40ct and was not happy with thread coverage - now I may try 46ct and see if that is better and I never realized all the smalls in that chart !!! But love them all !! May I ask one request - when you hold up charts or your pieces - could you hold up a bit longer - a few on this video I really couldn’t see - thank you !

I have had a few pieces where I didn't like the thread coverage on 36ct or 40ct. One thread of cotton floss wasn't enough and two was too many. Sometimes switching from cotton to silk like Au ver a Soie will make the difference since that silk floss fluffs out more than cotton. Some silk flosses like 100.3 are more tightly spun so the coverage is still a problem.
Then I discovered a trick in a kit I purchased from The Exemplarery Shop on Etsy. The directions mentioned going over one leg of the X twice and that has made all the difference in the world. I do a test spot in a corner on the linen I want to use to see how it will look. The test spot should be about 4-5 stitches across and 2-3 rows--nothing huge, just enough to get an idea of how it will look. And the test spot won't show in the finished item because you'll either pick it out (I never bother) or it will be folded behind the finished work whether framed or sewn into a small item.
