    As someone who lives in a very windy city: I feel this. Deeply.
    And thank you for highlighting this experience for your viewers. Foriegn travel isn't always sunshine and rainbows, and you have done a great job showing how to handle it and what to do.

    I very much appreciate you telling the more sombre history of the place you've visited. So often the history of areas is glossed over in travel vlogs, as the creators don't want to dampen the mood and I feel that the history of a place, whether good or bad, adds to the adventure.

    Oh, I feel for you so badly. If it's any consolation, three hours is pretty good. I was at a restaurant with a friend in Rwanda a few years ago. He'd parked up and we were just eating chips outside and chatting, then this guy (who later turned out to be drunk) pulled into the car park and very slowly - at walking pace - proceeded to roll into the back of our car. It didn't do much damage, just cracked a back light worth about $10, but we had to have an entire community meeting involving 40 people (everyone in the restaurant and everyone walking by) and we were there for almost five hours! People were seriously debating whose fault it was - we were stationary! We weren't even in the car! And we just said, 'cover the price of the light, no big deal,' but the head of the community meeting wouldn't let us leave until we'd all reached a unanimous decision over who was to blame. Even the guy who drove into us said 'yes, I'll pay, no problem,' and still the self-appointed community chairperson kept going. Honestly thought I was going to have to sleep there. Sounds like you just got a bit of a xenophobe who saw the opportunity for a new paint job. It's a real shame about the deposit but hope you can put it out of your mind, people like that aren't worth spending your holiday thinking about.

      I kind of giggling at a town meeting over a light; I mean the guy could just agree to get it fixed/pay the money and be done with it. I feel like that was the town's entertainment for the month or something.

      @mimhay912 Рік тому +1

      Such a shame though!

    • @writerinrwanda
      @writerinrwanda Рік тому +3

      @coffeegirl18 Absolutely 😄 I had a similar incident a few years earlier where someone turned the house next door into a nightclub and no one on the street could get any sleep. Same scenario. It took over four months of complaining to the council, resulting in a community meeting involving representatives from the entire neighbourhood. I had to be present but it was entirely in Kinyarwanda with no interpreter. Neither I nor the club owner spoke enough Kinyarwanda to follow along. Thankfully, my neighbour came along to back me up and he's well respected. Things are in transition, the procedures technically exist (insurance, noise department, city hall) but local community leaders still have a lot of authority and like to exercise it. Usually things get resolved well in the end, but that end can be a long time coming.

    Just a quick note to anyone traveling in Japan with/in a vehicle - if you hit anything, no matter how small or minor, you MUST call the police. You will actually get in more trouble for not calling them than the incident itself, regardless of the size or extent of the issue.

    I had this happen to me when I was returning from the supermarket, just about to go on a road trip with my family. As I went to open the door, a gust of wind blew the door out of my hand and it banged against the car next to me. This guy got out of the car, and just started yelling at me, saying I trashed his car. But there was no marks. He couldn't even tell me where the door had hit, because there were no marks. My baby was crying, and he just kept yelling at me, so I drove off. People like that need to chill

    I lived in northern Japan from 2000 to 2004. I drove a government car and I worked for the city, my boss was the mayor. One night before the big autumn festival, I got broadsided by a drunk driver. Some housewife who had a massive bottle of sake on the front seat and she was drinking it while she was driving. The car wasn’t totaled, but it was significantly damaged. Of course, she got out and started yelling and all of this stuff, but I spoke really good Japanese by that time, and I had also been in the hospital for six months about a year and before that happened so as soon as she started yelling at me, I calmly explained to her everything about her being drunk and me doing nothing wrong, and she ran the stop sign and slammed into me, and then I started explaining all the injuries that she could possibly have caused somebody if she had been going faster and that she was irresponsible and I just kept going and going and going in Japanese. She could barely stand up and she started stumbling a little bit perplexed as to why I was able to explain all of the things that she could have done to me because she was drunk and thankfully she didn’t so I’d like to go home and please give me your insurance information for hitting me. She then sobered up a little and start yelling again. My supervisor showed up, gave her his business card, and she realized that she was dealing with City Hall. The police showed up, they did thorough notes and a couple weeks later the car was fixed. But she was yelling at me that it was all my fault, and that I shouldn’t be there and gaijin this and that.

      @AlwaysAway  Рік тому +4

    Japan just has different standards about respecting other people's stuff. A small door ding in the parking lot is just part of life for us Americans as well, but damaging someone else's property (regardless of how slight the damage is) can be a big deal for Japanese. When foreigners think Japanese are blowing the situation out of proportion, it just reinforces their stereotypes of foreigners and aggravates them more.

    shiii....sh... This happened to me once as well, living in a windy city - at least it was in my home country. The dude was really "upset" to say it nice. The police was called, the mark on his door was compared, but the police were the MVPs telling that dude, that the rust in that particular mark couldn't appear during the time we waited for them to arrive (same thing I told that guy). Dude was charged 20 € for false alarm and the police had a loooong talk with him about how he was lucky they didn't charge him with insurance fraud. I stood there with a wide grin on my face for the whole time enjoying it to the last bit (got in trouble a little for being late for work, but you don't walk away from a performance like that).
    I hope you get the deposit back once it gets resolved, what a shi**y situation tho... good luck and all the best m8s

      They probably would've been called, but this woman riled up more I think out of embarrassment when Sharla came out. Her husband was trying to move his wife on and tell her not to worry but she got a bee in her bonnet haha. Our £2,000 deposit was lost over it, i would've been happy to pay for repairs but god knows how it cost 2k. The irony is a week later I woke up to someone hitting our van with their car door, before I could get out and say anything they drove off, and the mark they left was significantly bigger! Hope it was entertaining at least! Thanks for watching 💖

    Idk if this will make you feel better, but once while driving through the Midwest US, also on a very windy day, a dumpster hit our van. That's right, the dumpster hit US. It must've been blown into us overnight, bc when we checked out of our hotel in the morning there was this moment of "Hmm, I don't remember parking so close to that OH GOD." Luckily we weren't in the van while it happened, but it left a pretty sizable dent.

On the second last day of our trip I misjudged on a tight turn getting out of a carpark and put a significant gouge in the side of the camper :( when we returned it and I told the staff member what I had done he said "Well we owe you for that first night in the cabin so we'll call it even then, eh?".

    *brings out melon pan*
    Sharla: "I actually don't like it. It's not horrible. I wouldn't choose to eat it. It's very sweet."
    Me: both times I went to Japan and spent a month at a time there, I had it for breakfast every time. With my milk tea. 😂 It's my go to breakfast. I always like to start my day with something sweet. And I was just talking to my family about going to visit my cousin in Japan and how I'm excited just for the melon pan 😂

      Exactly this. Just because door dings and bumper scratches are a common occurrence that we shrug off in our home countries doesn't mean Japanese people think the same. Japanese culture calls for a high level of respect when it comes to other people's stuff. If a Japanese person damages something, no matter how minor the damage is, their social norms obligate them to take personal responsibility, and not doing that is considered rude. Downplaying the damage or saying that insurance will cover it is like saying "I don't care about the action that I caused that led to your stuff getting damaged."

    Bee in her bonnet? Sounds like it was more like a Japanese Hornet. I can get the thing about some Japanese people just hating on foreigners (glad she was the only trouble-maker), but what about Sharla specifically? (especially since Emma and Sharla look like siblings) Was it the accent? English/British = ok, US/Canadian = call the cops!

      I stayed in the van until the police arrived, so I never came face to face with her. I could just hear her screaming from inside the van. I came out when the police arrived but as soon as they showed up she vanished into the back of her mercedes to watch TV for the whole 3 hours while the husband dealt with it all 🙃

    I had this happen to me once on my M3, wind caught a little old Ladies door and whacked into the side of it, I just got out made sure it was alright and she was alright and let her go as it was a mark that would polish out and she said sorry, that Woman was a total turd and should've been fined for wasting police time, fingers crossed it didn't dampen things too much.

    • @AlwaysAway
      @AlwaysAway  Рік тому

      Ah no, it seems to happen a lot! A week after this we woke up to someone hitting our car really hard with their door and they drove straight off before I could even get out. And our car was way more scratched than this woman's car. I couldn't imagine ringing the police though 😂 luckily it was our only bad encounter in 3 months there, definitely didn't dampen the trip much. Though losing 2 grand over it certainly sucked...

    Sadly, there are a lot of Japanese people (mostly older people) who are not fond of foreigners. I’m half Japanese and I still get hate. I get called “ainoko”, which isn’t exactly a nice way to call a mix person. 😅 But just know majority of Japanese people are quite friendly and understanding! All they really want is peace. So thank goodness for that husband and the police.

    Blame everything on Sharla? I don't understand how 2000 pounds was lost. I understand you have insurance to cover the ding. Your rental can still be used. There's no damage to your rental. The Mercedes can still be used. I don't see how there would be any excess.
    I think (in the end) you were lucky that the woman called the police. I scratched a rental car in Japan last December against a pole. The scratches were noticeable and huge, but the rental company billed me 380 USD for repairs. It would've been covered by the insurance, but for that to happen, I would need a police report. The pole was already all scratched up and it was my fault, so I just drove away. When I returned the car, the staff at Toyota Rent-a-Car said that I should've called the police right then and there. The police would come and investigate and provide a full report of the incident. Then, I can submit the police report and use the insurance.
    At the end, I think you won't have to pay anything additional out of your pocket.

    • @Bakapooru
      @Bakapooru Рік тому +2

      Another way to think about it: the woman called the police for her own sake because she needed the report for file her claim.
