- I have finished the hinoki bath.
The total working time seemed to take almost 55 hours per two weeks.
The tools used to make the hinoki bath were worked with an old table saw, Makida 1016L, Trimmer and cost about 320$ in total for the tanderwood, hardware, and materials.

Beautiful project, you have inspired me to build one. Did you angle the end pieces? If so what is the angle?
The end of the bathtub was made smooth by rounding with a luter. I'm still using it every day, and I'm very satisfied with it. Thanks for watching.
What did you use for sealing around the drain? Looks like it might be a standard exterior caulk? how is it holding up?
Silicone was used for suture around the drain.
I'm still using it well without leaking water.

For internal attachment, a tie-bond 3 waterproof bond was used. I don't use advertising yet.
@@mj6user488 TiteBond calls TB III “water proof” then they say “... is not for continuous submersion or for use below the waterline”. I watched another video where the tongue was hammered narrower than it had been cut. When fitted into the groove and soaked, it swelled. No glue no leaks. I wonder about 3M 5200. If it would take the temps it would be a good choice.
@@rbstephenson4338 Titebond3 is FDA approved only for wood waterproofing.
Adhesive performance does not crack or leak after many years.
The more grooves there are, the better the waterproof performance.
The ingredient of 3M 5200 sealant is polyurethane, so i think it would be okay to use Adhesive performance.

It used the Hinoki tree imported from Japan. If you don't have Japanese Hinoki, you can make a bathtub with cedar trees.

i'm wondering if some hand-plane work might be saved by running the boards through a planer before assembly.
although there might be carpentry style and cost considerations as well. nice, accurate, work...
It's possible.
However, the cost can increase.
Moreover, the hinoki aggregated plate is difficult to obtain, thin, and poor in quality.(Water may leak through a finger joint method)
Processing wood may be the best in terms of cost.

How did you account for wood movement in the bottom piece? The way wood moves I'd think it would push sides away.
The floor piece grooved and tongued joint it doesn't fall apart by combining it in a way.

틈틈히 만든거라 작업기간은 약 2주 정도 만든것 같네요.

What are the size of the boards you are using and what kind of wood are the boards made of?
Your tub looks incredible.
It was made of hinoki wood 40mm×140mm×2400mm(10ea) cypress wood, and the size of the bathtub was 1100mm×600mm×H600mm.
Looks like 45mm wood. In the U.S. 1.5" is common, but anything thicker is hard to find. Specialty places will sell what's called 8/4 which is 2" thick but it starts at about $10/board foot. One thing that is different between this and a hot tub is that the water is drained in this after a while. How long do you let the water sit before draining it?
The tree is 40mm×140mm×2400mm and is made of Hinoki tree, a confiferous tree.
In inches, it should be 1.5"×5.5"×94.5".
The thickness of the wood is better for better bonding and waterproof performance, but you can decide between 30mm~50mm.
Make a drain on bottom of the bathtub and drain it.
After receiving water only when taking a bath, drain the water completely and dry it.
Nice work. Did you leave the wood natural, or did you apply a finish? How has it held up with use?
I didn't apply any finishing touches. I've been using it every day for more than two years now, but no mold is formed.
Is this wood similar to pine? Can pine be used?
Yes, you can make it out of pine trees. I recommend you to make 2x6 structural wood or cedar wood.

2. 편백이 썩거나 곰팡이가 필텐데 어떻게 방지 할 수 있나요
편백각재를 제혀쪽매로 가공하여 타이트본드3으로 집성했습니다. 제혀쪽매를 가공하기가 힘들지만 홈과 홈이 결합되기 때문에 각재를 그냥 집성하는것 보다 방수 성능이 뛰어납니다.
3년째 매일 사용하고 있지만 보이는 부분에서는 물때 말고는 곰팡이가 피지 않네요. (욕실 벽쪽과 바닥쪽은 욕조를 뺄 수 가 없어어 확인 못해봤습니다)
곰팡이가 피면 당분간 사용하지 말고 말리고 난뒤 사포로 갈아내면 될 듯 하네요.

where can I buy hinoki?
You can buy it at the wooden reseller's.
Can I use cypress or pine if I don't have hinoki?
Yes, you can make it out of pine trees.
Pine would be cheaper and might be a good option if you want to build one and try it out, but it may not hold up as well with the moisture.
Some of the places that make soaking tubs in the US will use either alaskan yellow cedar or port orford cedar (both of these are a type of cypress) in place of Hinoki.
Teak is also possible, but would be even more expensive.

Yellow cedar or port Oxford cedar are cheaper than Hinoki.
I was going to make it out of cedar, but cheaply because of my friend the wood store bought Hinoki.
Phytoncide is not much different.
Hinoki has a brighter color than the cedar tree.
If you take good care of the lime water scale you can make a good bathtub for a low price.

I've been planning my bathtub build for a few years now and was thinking Port Orford cedar was my only option, I had never heard of Alaskan Yellow cedar. I've heard PO cedar has a similar smell to Hinoki. Does Alaskan Yellow also have a nice aroma when it gets wet like Hinoki?
@@alpha_ray_burst As far as know, the Alaska Redwoods have a subtle fragrance when they get wet. Because the cedar system does not differ much from the phytoncide compared to the Hinoki, it has a subtle scent.
Redwood trees from Korea also smell better when they are built a inside the house as louver, and they smell better when wet.
The cedar was cheaper than the Hinoki, so I tried to make it into cedar. But my friend imported and sold Hinoki from Japan, so I could buy it cheap.
