Why is the Roland JUNO-106 still so popular?

- In this video you listen only to Roland JUNO-106 sounds (Multitrackdemo also including drums). I used to own a JUNO-106 several years ago, then sold it, because I also have a JUNO-60. After some time I missed it and decided to buy another JUNO-106. The Reasons are:
1. it sounds different from the JUNO-60 (there is another filter)
2. it has great MIDI functions to implement it in a modern setup
3. it has portamento
4. the self resonance is really outstanding for technoid sounds
5. three Key Modes, including unison mode, which is easer to access but it sounds only useful for drums ans industrial bases
6. it's perfect sounding in a mix and a great production tool
7. it has a broad sound palette and is useful for modern styles
8. it's great for drums and bass
The JUNO-60 has got an arpeggiator, the 106 not. So what, in a recording session I use it from my DAW or an external one. For Jamming with a drummashine without computer, the JUNO-60 makes more fun.
So I decided that the JUNO-60 is great sounding, but not a substitute for a JUNO-106.
The reasons, why it is still so popular are:
1. It always sounds great and it has a wide sweet spot
2. It is simple to program
3. It covers a range of 80 to 90 % of all bread and butter sounds you really need
4. It is capable of a lot of genres, italo disco, 80-ies pop, electro, techno, house and much more
In this video you only hear sound from the JUNO-106, no processing, FX or mastering.
Please enjoy the video and see you next time.
My first synth, those days (1983... 1984...?) financed by my grandmother... R.I.P and thanks a lot grandma! :-)
And the best thing is - I still own it after alle these years. Just renewed the battery at MUSIK AKTIV in Paderborn, where I purchased it. The guys are by far younger than the Juno. They really admired it. And this video convinced me to keep it in stock and use it more often. So many memories. Great sounds.
Roland rulez! :-)
Thanks for the video!
Juno-106 is a beauty. Very happy to own one in good working order. The pitch bender/mod stick is very musical. Presets sound awesome. I don't know what it is. It just makes me happy.
Growing up as a massive fan of Industrial music. This has always been on my gear bucket list. Even if I am a guitarist!
Synths I own currently:
Roland Juno 106
Roland Juno 6
Roland Jx8p w/PG800
Roland SH101
Korg DSS1
Korg DW8000
Korg DV800
Korg poly61 x2
Oberheim Matrix 6r
w/alpesmachine programmer
Arturia matrixbrute
Behringer vc340
Pearl Syncussion
The only synth I play every day is the Juno 106. The bass boost at HPF-0 and the sub are perfect.
This along with the perfected workflow are priceless.
Classic look & sounds. The immediacy of the 106 makes it such a pleasure to use.
Like it or not, it will always be a classic.
Your Juno 106 looks almost like new and sounds really great! Excellent video!
Thanks Bernd. Big luck to find it in that shape with blue and white switches for a decent price.
Just rebuilt mine the other day. Still fun to play with.
Thanx! A good demonstration. 106 a very hands on lovely synth.
I thought you were going to show how to program the sounds you used in the intro tune ;) Perhaps an idea for an additional video?
I got my very first Juno-106 two days ago and very happy with it. There's an Alpha Juno 2 in my arsenal for quite a few years, and in theory it's an even more powerful Juno, the 106 has a specific sound :)
And I do love the sliders on it! The AJ 2 has the evil "Alpha Dial from hell" but luckily I have a DT-300 programmer for it lol :D
This sets my NWM (Nostalgia Wave Modulation) to max. Great starter synth.
My fav! and most played;
Had new voice chips installed at Rosen Sound (their custom made ones) and complete over haul, also they converted the patch shift to use the chorus on external gear. Like new. Thanks for your vid.
Another synth that is so expensive now. Love the sounds though I can understand why you wanted another one. Great video as always!
Thank you
So musical ❤❤❤
Hi :) Juno 106 is Excellent :) i had tried it just a little (in roland cloud) ... i d choosed one year of ultimate cloud .. i dont know what to choose, could you advice me maybe, between : juno4, juno 60, jupiter 8 JV-1080, D-50, JD 800
Thx a lot :)
Depends on your style. My fav is the Juno 60
@@vintagesynths ok thx amigo :) i ll tell u my choice :)
I sold my juno 106 when the d50 came .
Last week i bought Softube's Model 84. The best soft 106 around. And that's for shure. And it's much cheaper than a vintage 106
Does your computer’s OS still support that VST? Not for much longer…
What do you think of the new Softube Model 84 plugin. It's a Juno 106 emulation. How closely do you think it gets to a real Juno 106?
I don’t know this VST. It would be interesting to compare it.
It' s the best there is. I have them all... Roland Cloud, Cherry Audio DCO106 and TAL's U-NO LX
Back in the 1980's, the Juno 106's popularity was because it was relatively cheap, very easy to use, and fairly reliable. It was a great starter synthesizer for the beginner. Now with the hyperinflated market prices, I don't think the Juno 106 is a good buy. It is a decent sounding synthesizer, but the Juno 60 sounds much better in my opinion. I personally wouldn't pay the ridiculous asking prices of any Juno 6/60/106 series today.
Best keyboard synth ever. Amazing
Nothing beats the 80s quality analog stuff. Everything else is just garbage let’s face it. Quality was quality
Ever heard of a Prophet-5? Ob8?
There is NO emulation on the planet for the Junos that comes even close, especially when playing it live yourself. Sure the videos show one on one square waves with oscilloscopes and lots of other stuff. But that's not it. It's the magic between all those lines.
The same reason Journey is popular.
They used the Jupiter-8.
the most overrated synth of ALL TIME
The prices run high very steep. It’s not rational. But I conclude that it’s worth at least a grand for studio and music purposes compared to modern synths on the market.
@@vintagesynths to me, it would probably be worth 800. The only thing you buying is the chorus, and it’s one of the most fragile synth ever, and when the voice do not work anymore, need repair probably cost 500
@@vintagesynths wonderful video btw !
@@rocks1423 Yeah, that chorus is pretty sweet sounding. My 106 is voiceless, it has been for over a year now, a couple sliders are missing the plastic bit, one of them somehow got bent and one of them fell out, the stick part. Who knows what else may be wrong with it by now. I see the a full set of voice chip clones are $300 alone, with labor and what not it's probably going to cost me quite a bit to get it running again. Can't do it right now anyways, bummer.
Sorry for the random rant. haha. Just venting,
@@rocks1423 thx
