Well done Vanessa. As a former military man we would often sleep out in Sennelager in temperatures down to -22 °C, with wind-chill to -40°C, and we used to sleep only in underwear with our clothes and boots inside the schlafsack. The reason was very simple; if we slept in clothes we would sweat and the clothes would get damp. Then, when we got up the damp clothes would freeze to our bodies and give us hypothermia and the frozen boots would give us blisters and chilblains. By stripping off, the clothes and boots kept dry and warm, and we could quickly get dressed and be warm and dry again…

Try using wool base-layers! They're very comfortable! They won't retain perspiration - they evaporate perspiration quickly! Look into SmartWool, Ice-Breakers, or MInus-33!

I know this was 8 years ago, but I had a thought about the idea of using a woodland camouflage pattern for your tarp shelter. I suggest this only because even in the darkness, a flashlight user wouldn't even know you're there. I would never want to expose the camp to strangers when I'm in the forest.
People can be the most dangerous animals in the forest. Just a suggestion for you. Keep in mind when in the darkness that everything with a shine will be seen with a flashlight.

It's an interesting clip! A combination of eight years before and now, after many ups and downs in your family life and professional work (around the clock!) for UA-cam, and you getting sick for a long time! But it can be said that you have not changed much and you have the same beauty and charm as before!
I really admire what you do Vanessa. Have always cooked food not common to camping also. For just myself, can pack in enough in backpack, even for two or three days. I also have a flask of wine I bring for cooking. I dont drink anymore, ive had friends come to my cabin and they see my bottle of wine they will ask me " I thought you said you dont drink..." Its a bottle of wine i have for cooking. Thats more of a European thing is using wine for cooking and having a large bottle of it. out here in the country wood where my cabin is, community around me, dont know that i was a Chef for many years. As for people who know me in large cities, dont really understand that I use live chickens, butcher them and make dinner.
I learned how when i was a teenager and i would spend my summer vacations from school deep in the mountains on my grandparents farm, they were poor and lived a life like our great depression, very meek, meager like the 1800s life. Thats how I know how to get along just perfect living out in the deep woods. I can see how people would come out here from the big city and die from exposure, illnesses, starvation, all kinds of dangers. Even though i lived in a huge city, and appear like a urbanite, a office type of guy, I was in the Army , went to Ranger school, Jungle school many specialized training in the Army, folks never know this of me because I dont openly show it. Like that guy on Garand Thumb, he looks like a geeky dork type, one you would never pick out of a crowd , but he is a top tactical expert. its been called Gray Man, the guy or gal who you would never suspect is trained in Survivalism, Tactical, and Police training.
I remember watching this when it was new. Hard to believe so much time has gone by. ❤

Much fun seeing how you started out in bushcraft.
I'm picky about my food now that I live in the middle of farm country and get to know the locals who grow crops and food animals. Yes, it's more expensive than the grocery store, but it's so much better quality. Vegetables from the grocer will rot before I can eat them all because they are harvested long before I buy them, but the farm fresh produce is gone before it rots at my home.
Thank you princess for the lessons on Celt celebrations. But I am only familiar with Native American custom’s. Being African American we were stripped of such customs, But you still carry a part of me thru your eyes. My German heritage, I am a zen practitioner. When looking for a path for my faith, I found, I found zen. But looking deeper I may be Celted spirited. I don’t know. I was born a Christian. Studied catholic, baptist, Methodist, and a few more. But wanted to know the truth. So I asked god to teach me the truth and he or she pointed to look outside. Nature is my teacher. Like you. In this video you are still the most beautiful person I discovered. Again I never looked into your eyes. They are perfect. You are a good example for my daughter to discover the outdoors and bush craft. Take care.

You need a tent that you can zip closed and they make a small coal heater that you can light and after the flame goes out and the coals are just glowing you can put it in the tent with you and it will keep you warm most of the night

Every camper's nightmare! I just wish that one can have a good nightvision goggles so that it can save so much anxiety whenever something or someone is out there. Knowing what sort of a creature that intruder was can help campers to prepare for possible defensive action.

Hi Vanessa I really enjoyed your video. I live in Western Australia so even in the Winter time the temperature doesn't really get below 1C so really the time of the year when things can get a bit dicey is in the Summer when the temperature can hover around 45C so water is very important. So I like to see the contrast from other countries like yours and how you deal with it, and I agree with you about people in city ,I rather deal with the poisonous snakes and insects than with unpredictable people. I have been following your videos for several years now, and I am a big fan of your work. I grew up in the north of Spain, where I learnt to love the outdoors. I have lived in Oregon for many years, and it is paradise for people like us.
English is not my first language, so I can totally relate with you. Mastering a new language as an adult is not an easy task. Your English is great, and it continuous to improve, but you still say things now and then that are totally endearing, but not quite right.
One example of that is that when you talk about "nature", you call it "the nature". In this video you refer to Christianity as "the Christianity". Neither of those words need the article. I can relate with you because in Spanish they would, and obviously in German they do too.
The reason why I bring that up is because I want to warn you of something. Please forgive me, but I have noticed in this video, and in previous videos too, that when you say "flashlight", you pronounce it as "fleshlight", and that is a commonly known sex toy. 🤭
As your friend, I cannot let you go on without warning you. Love you always, and please keep up the good work ❤🤗

If the bag is good sleeping in underwear only is good. Keeps you warmer by not sweating and soaking your clothes, I kick them down to the bottom/foot of my bag. Then I have warm clothes to put on in the morning before getting out of the bag.

You can collect all your tin cans and hang them from string around your camp. Not too low so small animals trigger it but about chest height coz most people moving in a Forrest will point the flashlight towards the ground looking for trip hazards and hopefully will not see your Alarm.😂😂
You could also hang a Trail Cam from a nearby tree which would make interesting viewing showing all your nocturnal visitors.😂😂
A pair of PJ's for sleeping in wouldn't take up much room in your Rucksack.👍
Always a good idea to learn what Wildlife lives in the area you intend to visit. Prevents schoolboys being eaten by Polar Bears, men being eaten by sharks and chimpanzees eating Ladies.
Often, when I camp at a Bike Rally, I fold my jacket or Hoodie to use as a pillow. Good idea to take a beanie hat since most of your heat loss is from your head.
