  • This amp was on the road in the fall season and was having some problems. We replace some scratchy pots, rework a TERRIBLE cap job done by someone else, installed retaining sockets for the preamp tubes and add a pre phase master volume control to increase the tonal options from this beast. Adjusted the bias and hum balance control before boxing it up and sending it off.
The master volume knob adds versatility to this amp like you wouldn't believe. It does so much more than just turning it down. Check out the video to see. I run through a couple different tones in part two which is here • MTI era Ampeg SVT Repa...

Looks similar to Fender HRD that I picked up for a repair that looked similar including the white silicone they smeared all over the circuit board. That stuff is used for a bathroom caulking job, not a amplifier! It looked like a two year old got in there and was putting icing on a cake. Fixing someone else's disaster ain't for me, so I returned it!

As someone who plays bass mostly in a studio, through a sans amp, when I'm recording, this video was tremendously informative and helped me understand some new used gear I just acquired for playing bass with a band. I'm wondering about the fan noise you get at 9:55. I live in an apartment, so I haven't gotten a chance to really take this amp out and stretch its legs, but I definitely have the same fan noise. I was a little surprised it was that loud. Is this something that's normal?
Thanks again for the great video.

Those fans aren't quiet but I don't think I ever noticed it coming through the speakers at all. I'm sure a modern replacement exists that might be closer to silent but I don't think it's a problem. I'm reconditioning an early 70's model now and the fan sounds about the same. Quite normal for a lot of bass amps with this many tubes to have some sort of method to displace all that heat generated by that sweet ass tone.

@@purgasound Awesome. Thank you! Yeah, absolutely not coming through the speakers at all, but it was just a lot more noise in the room than I've ever noticed. I'm taking it to a rehearsal space this weekend where I'll really be able to let it cook. I can't wait.

Hi Purgasound, what Pot value do you use for the Master-Volume? Do you only use the Pot ore any additional parts for filtering?

Just a 1MA pot in the signal path. Nothing fancy, keeping it real simple. Keeping that phase inverter from distorting really helps the low end stay together and you can turn it down quite a bit before you actually start dropping in volume.

Hey bro I have a Engl Powerball Type1 version 2. I'd like someone to go through it. This amp has been toured with and made many a trips around the US. It was Jason Richardsons old amp from his days when it was him and Chris Storey.... where are you located man.

Seeing those craptastically sloppy soldered glue boogered caps hurt my feelings something fierce
