Very good video. I like that you looked at various things in detail - especially the TSS + the mysterious traffic jam assist. And not just theory. Most "reviewers" just skip over these actually super important things.
Yeah you have a point, now if I could figure out how to fit my big ass downhill bike inside the trunk with the wheels and handlebars on, that'd be great. I ALMOST miss those old mountain bike stems with the pinch bolts which allow you to turn the bars. I'm torn between the fuel efficiency of this Prius prime versus the insanely practical Ford Transit Connect XL, with much much lower fuel economy.
IMHO "not offensive" does not do.this design justice. Compare it to Teslas, that cost 2 or 3 times as much. Teslas do not have style. This Prius is really stylish.
In Europe the tesla m3 is actually cheaper now. But then its a "cheap" car after all. People that never saw a museum can talk about scandinavian design as much as they want 😂
Couldn't agree more... Tesla's are ugly as 💩 and are known for their poor build quality... I'd buy this car and put the considerable savings in to Tesla shears!!.🤣🤣
I have been searching for un-biased content online/video, wherever and you do an exceptional job in your review. In depth and lots of considerations. Nice work. I plan on the XSE myself. Saw the Prius and then the Prime, and the additonal cost is marginal for a better model.
The letter B on the shifter pattern is not for regenerative braking. That is Brake Mode. It's for going down steep hills. It slows the car way down. You should only use this mode when absolutely necessary.

I am looking to test drive a 2023 Prius Prime, before I even tell my husband I'm considering a test drive, because if he hears the word Prius, he will potentially throw me out of the house 😂 so I need to have my ducks in a row ahead of time, lol! This video is one I will show him, after I line up said ducks. I need to check the ground clearance, because access is an issue for me, not because I'm tall, but because my knees are not a big fan of getting in and out of cars that are super low to the ground anymore, but otherwise the fuel savings is very attractive to me, and the redesign makes this a viable option in my book, so I just need to get all my homework done, and this video really contributes to that research. Well done!
I found it harder to get in and out of this Prius, I drove it twice. Knee problems too, and keeping my cars for 10 years, haha, it will only get worse. Im short and I also felt like I had to duck my head to get in.🤷🏻♀️ I have a 2009 Prius that seats completely differently/easy to get in and out of. I didn’t buy it.
Well done. I've watched quite a few videos on the 2023 Prime and hope to pick mine up in a couple weeks. I've read half the manual but still learned quit a bot here. Yours is he first video I've seen that has not complained about the riving display being blocked by the steering wheel. I've always thought that one should be able to adjust things to make this work. (seat and wheel) I noticed today driving my wife's car that I could easily block the speed info by putting the wheel in the wrong place -- and no body complains about that.
@HermanWillems it is not more expensive than a tesla, you can make 6 of these because fewer batteries than pure electric, i have no range anxiety, and drive 90% electric.
I’ve watched a lot of Prius Prime reviews and yours is by far the best. One thing on the regen braking settings, I think pressing the brake pedal also regen brakes up to a point before it starts friction braking. The brake pedal isn’t just friction braking. At least that’s how it is on my 23 hilander hybrid, but it doesn’t have regen level settings. (At least I’m not aware that it does). My 24 Prius Prime is supposed to arrive October 2024, after waiting since July. Thanks for the video.

Been considering ordering one. We have a 2010 Prius that needs new paint and a new stereo. I think I'm going to fix it up (better trade in) and just wait until these Primes are more available. We are in Texas and want the solar roof option as the car will bake in the sun all day while wifey is at work.
One of the better videos I've seen on the new Prius Prime. I really appreciated you going over more of the technology because the Prius has always been known for that. I have a 2004 Prius i bought new. It's got 281,000 miles though I've swapped out the hybrid battery twice now with rebuilt ones. The first rebuilt lasted 4 years. I got the second early this year. BTW, im a stickler for the oil changes every 5000 miles too I ordered my XSE Premium in March and I'm still waiting.😡
How did you order it? Dealers near me wouldn't even let us order it. We gotta buy whatever is allocated to them or whatever they have. Luckily I got my Prime XSE in white last month when the car just arrived in the lot.
@ctgaming168 I should clarify. I didn't place an actual purchase order. I put down $500 and filled out a request forms with the specifics I wanted including color and trim level. BTW, I received my car last week, but got lucky because someone canceled their reservation and mine matched the specifics perfectly so they offered it to me and I accepted. It's a blue Prius Prime XSE Premium. I'm extremely happy and impressed with the car especially coming from driving a 2004 Prius I've been driving for the last 19 years. Congrats on your car.

52:05 I believe the math is a little off on this. As you previously said, in hybrid mode the car does 48 MPG. The 114 MPG figure you quote here includes the energy kicked in by the battery pack. So the true annual fuel cost is $500 for gas _plus_ however much it costs to charge the battery X number of times, where X is whatever the EPA thinks it should be for the average driver over those 12,000 miles.
All of you need to learn the difference between MPG and MPGe. A gallon of gas has the energy equivalent of 33.7 kWh of electricity. There’s your clue, now go learn something.
I was a young man in the early 80s, when the non super cars, but the best of anything even remotely affordable had 0-60 times of 9.2s+... The ultimate super car, the Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer, @$550k current dollars, was 5.2s...😮 I've read from early primes, on long road trips, you charge on the highway before coming to in town driving so that you're in electric mode in town. As that's 90%+ of my driving, charge mode quite important.
I think 0-60 in 6.5 seconds is still really fast. I never bought into the "slow" scenario the media made about the 9.2 seconds on earlier models. Prius has been always been an irrationally hated car. I never had problems keeping up with traffic (or any repairs either) with any the three I've owned. I remember being really impressed with the old Rav4 V-6. One car magazine called the Rav4 V-6 brutally fast. It also went to 60 in 6.5 seconds.
A comment from the UK. Very useful video and as I'm a car nut not to long for me. Currently driving a 14 year old Prius( 2010) which still runs perfectly and gives 68 gas mileage. We gear we will get the new Prius here in late 2024. I think I might go for it 😅❤👍
I liked your presentation very much. Let me add two notes from my experience with the 2024 Prius LE (not plug-in) 1) The signaling about the exceeding speed limit in Red admits regulation so that you can set how much your speed may exceed the limit not yet generating the red warning on your screen. 2) The proactive driving assist PDA has to sub-settings On/Off separately for Deceleration Assist and Steering Assist. I preferred to switch Off the DA because in the urban setting, it applies brakes when the distance to the car in front is still large enough (about 20 m) and this feature cannot be regulated.
11:00 The regeneration works regardless of whether you push the brake or switch to ‘B’. Pressing the ‘B’ just makes things automatic, which is grand as long as you need to brake at least as hard as the regen does, but if you are in ‘B’ all the time you will have to fight to not over-regen, which is both inefficient and puts extra wear on the hybrid battery.
While you're correct that regenerative braking occurs automatically, without any driver intervention, you are BOTH completely wrong about the 'B' shift position. The selection of the 'B' position engages engine braking, which means the compression of the engine's cylinders adds mechanical resistance. It's intended for use when descending a grade, just like the systems used by heavy trucks. The loss of efficiency and range is because you're wasting kinetic energy which could have been harvested by the motor-generators. This video highlights that people really need to take a look at a little-known product, the owner's manual.
@@robertshunter That applies to the standard HEV Prius. In the Plug-in the B mode works differently and does actually work to give you more generation.
Thanks for the really comprehensive review. I don't have the timestamp but at one point you said the seats get uncomfortable after a few hours. That's me out. I had issues with the seats in a prior generation so it just confirms my previous experience.
Prius is gorgeous.. $43,000 Canadian I put a deposit on the 2024 Corolla Hybrid SE AWD. $35,000 Canadian I wonder if I should have chosen the 2024 Corolla Hybrid LE AWD $33,000 Canadian I could have saved $2,160 when comparing SE vs. LE MSRP.
I really like that Toyota is actually taking this model seriously by giving it some appeal for the first time ever, but I'm surprised to hear so many reviewers bring up the pronounced wind noise on such an aerodynamic car. You'd think the coefficient of drag would be even lower with the steeply raked windshield and long fastback roofline, but it's actually higher than the frumpy design of the previous models. It would not hurt Toyota to put a few more pounds of insulation on these cars where it counts. I like Japanese manufacturers but they all tend to skimp way too much on sound deadening material, which is not particularly expensive and doesn't add that much weight.
There is plain white styrofoam in the back lol. Our 2000 Toyota celiac is surprisingly quiet inside until the second you hit 60 mph, then it becomes almost too loud.
I like your jumpcuts. They works for you, you seem to have quick mind and the jumpcuts or call it the non match frame edits work well. I'm a digital artist but I used to work as a film maker/editor.
Excellent and very thorough review ! I appreciate the insights on the leg/knee room. I love most aspects of this car but I will have to sit in one to see if the cockpit space is going to be an issue. Very informative video, this is definitely the best Prius Prime video I’ve seen so far. I’ve been driving a 2006 Prius for 17 years, I still like it but this new Prius looks very tempting.
@@Krowicki What company had the Prius available for rent? Was it an SF only company? I’m in LA and would definitely like to rent one for an extended test drive. In fact, I did that back in 2006 before purchasing the car I have now. Since I keep cars a long time I like to make sure I like them first.
They sure did a bang-up job improving the looks. If I didn't know better and had seen one without a badge on it I might have guessed a new Tesla rather than a Toyota. At least until I noticed that the body panels aligned correctly....
Good review thanks. I own a 2017 Prius and only get oil changes every 15,000 miles or once a year. These Prius cars are different than non hybrid cars. I have close to 160k miles and have gotten less than a dozen oil changes in 7 years. No need for oil changes every 5k or 10k. Once a year is fine if you drive less than 15k miles a year from my experience. I drive a lot cause I am part time Lyft driver too.

Great review. Best one I have seen on any car. I have the 2023 ford escape and think it’s not getting a fair rating. I have seen where it has been tested against the top brands in its class and won, tied, or finished right behind. Yet when ranked it has been a lot lower. I would like to see a review of it from you.
Dealers may never get a ton of them but you might get a deal on a demo or fleet model. I say this because the 2014 Prius IV that I drove was loaded with the solar roof. There were hardly any of them available. When I got in a minor accident (2023) and the front bumper, hood and passenger door were damaged they totaled it and gave me 75% of what I paid for it. Someone really wanted that car. I wish I’d kept it but now I’m getting the 2024 LTD AWD.
Does this adaptive cruise control have a function that slows the car down when you are coming into a curve? Slower than the cruise speed you set it to? Thanks great video
The car will slow down on its own in a turn (if it judges the speed is too fast), even when you are not in Cruise Mode. In our town there are lots of steep hills with sharpe turns and the car always slows us when we're going a bit too fast. The car also slows its self automatically when coming upon stalled traffic when not using Cruise. In Cruise, the Prime will completely slow and stop the car when it encounters slowing or stopped traffic. The fellow posting this video has a lot to learn about this car. B Mode is for Engine Braking. The regenerative braking operates all the time, does not matter which "gear" the shifter is in.

Great review except for repeating the EPA 115 eMPG fuel economy hype (My 2023 Prius Prime XSE sticker said 114 eMPG). Using round numbers, you paid $5.00 for 40 miles in EV mode with a stated comparison gas price of $4 a gallon. So your $5 was equivalent to 1.25 gallons - 40 miles on 1.25 gallons of gas was 32 in "my eMPG" - cheaper to stay in HV mode. Here in south Florida charging at home at $0.14294 per kWh using the provided Level 1 charger, with current gas at $3.13 per gallon, I am seeing 64 to 75 "my eMPG". Many PriusChat folk are reporting their electric rates are double and triple mine. The other point I would like to make on the car - is the actual, physical buttons for the climate control. Coming from a 2009 Prius where everything went through the multi-function touch screen, my wife says having real buttons is the best feature of the car for her! Agree with the less room for the driver in this model, but I'm 5-11 and once I found a compromise steering wheel position that allows seeing the whole information display and not squeezing my knees getting in and out, I found the 700 mile drive home from picking up the car to be very comfortable - no knee pain, no back pain, no butt pain. Visibility out the back is really reduced from my 2009 Prius - still getting used to that. I absolutely love the styling, love the driving on freeways and around town, love the EV mode with HV fail-over. For a hurricane escape vehicle this EV + HV combination will really shine getting me out of Florida before the storms.
You made some amazing points here. Energy prices in CA are ridiculous especially with the PG&E monopoly. Physical buttons are fantastic and easy to use. I forgot to mention the reduced rear visibility but it is for sure less than what we had the previous prime. Enjoy your new prime and thanks for the useful insights!

Yeah man I’m on my 2nd Prius (2016, and then 2022 prime). Sold my first one it was in great condition when I sold it at 138k miles. My newer one is nice but I realized the same thing. It is actually more expensive to charge my car overnight than to just drive my prime like a regular hybrid. Electricity is expensive here in CA
Very good video, you got to how tall you were and that was a question I was going to ask. To compare getting in and out and head height in front and back, especially for the older folks. Only other question is noise level at a couple of different speeds, also important to us older folks.

For fuck's sake, raise the seat, shove the wheel ahead some and, set your seat back straighter. Does the Prius do anything to track how many miles the engine actually ran? If someone is using almost only EV mode for commuting, it would be cool to be able to track actual engine use.
It has blended brakes, so the brake pedal will use the regen braking for regular stopping. Stop harder and it will seamlessly transition to friction brakes
Practically this car is awesome. EV plus exceptional range is just perfect for a new car. It’s super efficient and the Toyota reliability makes it fantastic. It is just hard for me as a prospective buyer to justify the price - in Canada this model trim is comparable in price to luxury brands, and I’d rather get a lexus for a similar price
You gonna pay so much in gas for Lexus if it's not a plug-in model. I sold my Lexus for the prime XSE cuz I can save so much gas by charging at home and work.
@@ctgaming168yeah we have an 03 matrix, almost 10L/100km. Waiting on an SE and we did the math. We'd save roughly 150$ on gas with our driving at 1.60/L. In terms of monthly budget this or a regular corolla would be roughly the same. And if we pay the financed portion aggressively, we'll be ahead quickly
@@ZeromuS_ You should go for XSE. It has nicer seats and amenities. It's not that much more. The only downside is the big wheels which you can change later once you get to replace the tires.
@@ctgaming168 I drive an 03 now, the extra features are totally unnecessary and we have toddler plus baby. This is a family car for us. I'd rather not have nicer seats, and not have heated back seats since we will be using carseats and boosters. Plus the slightly longer range is actually something we prefer also. The extra cost isn't that much more but it's for stuff we don't need, and given we have to finance some of the purchase, we're fine with an SE. And, also, we ordered it back in January and it's still 6 months out potentially. So it's moot anyway! :p
@@ZeromuS_ well if you like fabric seats and no heated front seats. Heated front seats is nice for cold days. The point about wheels/mileage/range is moot cuz you can easily swap them and get the better ones. Most people want bigger wheels so you probably can swap for extra cash.
114 MPGe is the electric equivalent mileage. Gas hybrid mode mileage is 52 MPG. So the comparison he did was for fully electric driving. And it really depends on your cost of electricity and gas and your driving needs and habits. You have to do your own math to get a useful comparison. At 34 cents per kwh and 6 dollars per gallon the per mile costs are 9 cents on electric and 12 cents on gas.
@@kng128 You can't 'fix' a ripped apart tire. No such thing. No such tools can be a full security policy against being stranded with a flat. I know this all too well from personal experience. No, it doesn't happen often, but when it does it is a show stopper. And in that case it is pointless, so no, i don't see it. A car without a spare is not an option at all. I know i'm not the only one with this position. It's too bad, because it looks like this rules out many great models, but i will not be seduced into a purchase that does not meet my highest priorities - reliability and security.

However if I were using my vehicle for towing or hauling I agree with you and a full spare wheel is obligatory.
I just found in my KIA NIRO there’s room in the back under the cargo cover is room for a ‘donut’ spare though it doesn’t come with one. I found a spare on Amazon $240 USD. I’ll probably be buying it after I verify the dimensions of both the hole and the wheel.

I agree with you on the Tesla's. In the bay area when you see one every 5 seconds, it gets boring pretty quick.

The letter B on the shifter pattern is not for regenerative braking. That is Brake Mode. It's for going down steep hills. It slows the car way down. You should only use this mode when absolutely necessary.

I am looking to test drive a 2023 Prius Prime, before I even tell my husband I'm considering a test drive, because if he hears the word Prius, he will potentially throw me out of the house 😂 so I need to have my ducks in a row ahead of time, lol! This video is one I will show him, after I line up said ducks. I need to check the ground clearance, because access is an issue for me, not because I'm tall, but because my knees are not a big fan of getting in and out of cars that are super low to the ground anymore, but otherwise the fuel savings is very attractive to me, and the redesign makes this a viable option in my book, so I just need to get all my homework done, and this video really contributes to that research. Well done!

I found it harder to get in and out of this Prius, I drove it twice. Knee problems too, and keeping my cars for 10 years, haha, it will only get worse. Im short and I also felt like I had to duck my head to get in.🤷🏻♀️

Well done. I've watched quite a few videos on the 2023 Prime and hope to pick mine up in a couple weeks. I've read half the manual but still learned quit a bot here. Yours is he first video I've seen that has not complained about the riving display being blocked by the steering wheel. I've always thought that one should be able to adjust things to make this work. (seat and wheel) I noticed today driving my wife's car that I could easily block the speed info by putting the wheel in the wrong place -- and no body complains about that.
This thing is more expensive than a Tesla. Why would you still want to drive on gasoline if its so expensive?
@HermanWillems it is not more expensive than a tesla, you can make 6 of these because fewer batteries than pure electric, i have no range anxiety, and drive 90% electric.

I’ve watched a lot of Prius Prime reviews and yours is by far the best. One thing on the regen braking settings, I think pressing the brake pedal also regen brakes up to a point before it starts friction braking. The brake pedal isn’t just friction braking. At least that’s how it is on my 23 hilander hybrid, but it doesn’t have regen level settings. (At least I’m not aware that it does). My 24 Prius Prime is supposed to arrive October 2024, after waiting since July. Thanks for the video.

Deshalb ist die Abnutzung der Bremsklötze/Bremsscheiben beim Prius viel geringer, als bei herkömmlichen Autos. Das Bremspedal funktioniert nicht über Kabelzug, sondern by wire, also über elektronische Signale. Ein Bremsdrucksimulator sorgt jedoch dafür, das der Priusfahrer das Gefühl hat, eine herkömmliche Bremse wie in einem herkömmlichen Auto zu betätigen.

Been considering ordering one. We have a 2010 Prius that needs new paint and a new stereo. I think I'm going to fix it up (better trade in) and just wait until these Primes are more available. We are in Texas and want the solar roof option as the car will bake in the sun all day while wifey is at work.
One of the better videos I've seen on the new Prius Prime. I really appreciated you going over more of the technology because the Prius has always been known for that. I have a 2004 Prius i bought new. It's got 281,000 miles though I've swapped out the hybrid battery twice now with rebuilt ones. The first rebuilt lasted 4 years. I got the second early this year. BTW, im a stickler for the oil changes every 5000 miles too

How did you order it? Dealers near me wouldn't even let us order it. We gotta buy whatever is allocated to them or whatever they have. Luckily I got my Prime XSE in white last month when the car just arrived in the lot.
@ctgaming168 I should clarify. I didn't place an actual purchase order. I put down $500 and filled out a request forms with the specifics I wanted including color and trim level.
BTW, I received my car last week, but got lucky because someone canceled their reservation and mine matched the specifics perfectly so they offered it to me and I accepted. It's a blue Prius Prime XSE Premium. I'm extremely happy and impressed with the car especially coming from driving a 2004 Prius I've been driving for the last 19 years. Congrats on your car.

52:05 I believe the math is a little off on this. As you previously said, in hybrid mode the car does 48 MPG. The 114 MPG figure you quote here includes the energy kicked in by the battery pack. So the true annual fuel cost is $500 for gas _plus_ however much it costs to charge the battery X number of times, where X is whatever the EPA thinks it should be for the average driver over those 12,000 miles.
All of you need to learn the difference between MPG and MPGe. A gallon of gas has the energy equivalent of 33.7 kWh of electricity. There’s your clue, now go learn something.

I've read from early primes, on long road trips, you charge on the highway before coming to in town driving so that you're in electric mode in town. As that's 90%+ of my driving, charge mode quite important.
I think 0-60 in 6.5 seconds is still really fast. I never bought into the "slow" scenario the media made about the 9.2 seconds on earlier models. Prius has been always been an irrationally hated car. I never had problems keeping up with traffic (or any repairs either) with any the three I've owned. I remember being really impressed with the old Rav4 V-6. One car magazine called the Rav4 V-6 brutally fast. It also went to 60 in 6.5 seconds.

I liked your presentation very much. Let me add two notes from my experience with the 2024 Prius LE (not plug-in)
1) The signaling about the exceeding speed limit in Red admits regulation so that you can set how much your speed may exceed the limit not yet generating the red warning on your screen.
2) The proactive driving assist PDA has to sub-settings On/Off separately for Deceleration Assist and Steering Assist. I preferred to switch Off the DA because in the urban setting, it applies brakes when the distance to the car in front is still large enough (about 20 m) and this feature cannot be regulated.
11:00 The regeneration works regardless of whether you push the brake or switch to ‘B’. Pressing the ‘B’ just makes things automatic, which is grand as long as you need to brake at least as hard as the regen does, but if you are in ‘B’ all the time you will have to fight to not over-regen, which is both inefficient and puts extra wear on the hybrid battery.
While you're correct that regenerative braking occurs automatically, without any driver intervention, you are BOTH completely wrong about the 'B' shift position. The selection of the 'B' position engages engine braking, which means the compression of the engine's cylinders adds mechanical resistance. It's intended for use when descending a grade, just like the systems used by heavy trucks. The loss of efficiency and range is because you're wasting kinetic energy which could have been harvested by the motor-generators. This video highlights that people really need to take a look at a little-known product, the owner's manual.

Thanks for the really comprehensive review. I don't have the timestamp but at one point you said the seats get uncomfortable after a few hours. That's me out. I had issues with the seats in a prior generation so it just confirms my previous experience.

I really like that Toyota is actually taking this model seriously by giving it some appeal for the first time ever, but I'm surprised to hear so many reviewers bring up the pronounced wind noise on such an aerodynamic car. You'd think the coefficient of drag would be even lower with the steeply raked windshield and long fastback roofline, but it's actually higher than the frumpy design of the previous models. It would not hurt Toyota to put a few more pounds of insulation on these cars where it counts. I like Japanese manufacturers but they all tend to skimp way too much on sound deadening material, which is not particularly expensive and doesn't add that much weight.
There is plain white styrofoam in the back lol.
Our 2000 Toyota celiac is surprisingly quiet inside until the second you hit 60 mph, then it becomes almost too loud.

The styling could have been a bit more individual, which Toyota are good at, but being a Toyota means it’s a no-brainier. Toyota are simply the best.
Very informative video, this is definitely the best Prius Prime video I’ve seen so far. I’ve been driving a 2006 Prius for 17 years, I still like it but this new Prius looks very tempting.

In fact, I did that back in 2006 before purchasing the car I have now. Since I keep cars a long time I like to make sure I like them first.

Good review thanks. I own a 2017 Prius and only get oil changes every 15,000 miles or once a year. These Prius cars are different than non hybrid cars. I have close to 160k miles and have gotten less than a dozen oil changes in 7 years. No need for oil changes every 5k or 10k. Once a year is fine if you drive less than 15k miles a year from my experience. I drive a lot cause I am part time Lyft driver too.

Dealers may never get a ton of them but you might get a deal on a demo or fleet model. I say this because the 2014 Prius IV that I drove was loaded with the solar roof. There were hardly any of them available. When I got in a minor accident (2023) and the front bumper, hood and passenger door were damaged they totaled it and gave me 75% of what I paid for it. Someone really wanted that car. I wish I’d kept it but now I’m getting the 2024 LTD AWD.
Actually charge mode is what attracts me. I go camping a lot. This could be useful.
My Prius Prime, 2022 model, only charges to 80% from the ICE engine. I would not be surprised if the new one does the same

I believe that would be the LTA - Lane Tracing Assist. It’ll brake a little and tap into the steering as well.
The car will slow down on its own in a turn (if it judges the speed is too fast), even when you are not in Cruise Mode. In our town there are lots of steep hills with sharpe turns and the car always slows us when we're going a bit too fast. The car also slows its self automatically when coming upon stalled traffic when not using Cruise.
In Cruise, the Prime will completely slow and stop the car when it encounters slowing or stopped traffic.
The fellow posting this video has a lot to learn about this car. B Mode is for Engine Braking. The regenerative braking operates all the time, does not matter which "gear" the shifter is in.
Very informative video....hard to believe that the old model is more aero dynamic than the new version.....hope they fixed the steering wheel peeling issue.
Great review except for repeating the EPA 115 eMPG fuel economy hype (My 2023 Prius Prime XSE sticker said 114 eMPG). Using round numbers, you paid $5.00 for 40 miles in EV mode with a stated comparison gas price of $4 a gallon. So your $5 was equivalent to 1.25 gallons - 40 miles on 1.25 gallons of gas was 32 in "my eMPG" - cheaper to stay in HV mode. Here in south Florida charging at home at $0.14294 per kWh using the provided Level 1 charger, with current gas at $3.13 per gallon, I am seeing 64 to 75 "my eMPG". Many PriusChat folk are reporting their electric rates are double and triple mine. The other point I would like to make on the car - is the actual, physical buttons for the climate control. Coming from a 2009 Prius where everything went through the multi-function touch screen, my wife says having real buttons is the best feature of the car for her! Agree with the less room for the driver in this model, but I'm 5-11 and once I found a compromise steering wheel position that allows seeing the whole information display and not squeezing my knees getting in and out, I found the 700 mile drive home from picking up the car to be very comfortable - no knee pain, no back pain, no butt pain. Visibility out the back is really reduced from my 2009 Prius - still getting used to that. I absolutely love the styling, love the driving on freeways and around town, love the EV mode with HV fail-over. For a hurricane escape vehicle this EV + HV combination will really shine getting me out of Florida before the storms.
You made some amazing points here. Energy prices in CA are ridiculous especially with the PG&E monopoly. Physical buttons are fantastic and easy to use. I forgot to mention the reduced rear visibility but it is for sure less than what we had the previous prime. Enjoy your new prime and thanks for the useful insights!

Yeah man I’m on my 2nd Prius (2016, and then 2022 prime). Sold my first one it was in great condition when I sold it at 138k miles. My newer one is nice but I realized the same thing. It is actually more expensive to charge my car overnight than to just drive my prime like a regular hybrid. Electricity is expensive here in CA
Very good video, you got to how tall you were and that was a question I was going to ask. To compare getting in and out and head height in front and back, especially for the older folks. Only other question is noise level at a couple of different speeds, also important to us older folks.

I'm 5'11", my wife is 5'9". Each of us sees a completely clear view of the gauges. For fuck's sake, raise the seat, shove the wheel ahead some and, set your seat back straighter. Those who are complaining about a blocked view are sitting in the DRIVERS seat like they are on a beach chair. Jesus.

Does the Prius do anything to track how many miles the engine actually ran? If someone is using almost only EV mode for commuting, it would be cool to be able to track actual engine use.

If the engine sounds like it’s “struggling” switch the drive mode. I usually kept my Prius it in ECO mode but you can switch it to Normal

It has blended brakes, so the brake pedal will use the regen braking for regular stopping. Stop harder and it will seamlessly transition to friction brakes
Practically this car is awesome. EV plus exceptional range is just perfect for a new car. It’s super efficient and the Toyota reliability makes it fantastic. It is just hard for me as a prospective buyer to justify the price - in Canada this model trim is comparable in price to luxury brands, and I’d rather get a lexus for a similar price
You gonna pay so much in gas for Lexus if it's not a plug-in model. I sold my Lexus for the prime XSE cuz I can save so much gas by charging at home and work.
@@ctgaming168yeah we have an 03 matrix, almost 10L/100km. Waiting on an SE and we did the math. We'd save roughly 150$ on gas with our driving at 1.60/L. In terms of monthly budget this or a regular corolla would be roughly the same. And if we pay the financed portion aggressively, we'll be ahead quickly
@@ZeromuS_ You should go for XSE. It has nicer seats and amenities. It's not that much more. The only downside is the big wheels which you can change later once you get to replace the tires.
@@ctgaming168 I drive an 03 now, the extra features are totally unnecessary and we have toddler plus baby. This is a family car for us. I'd rather not have nicer seats, and not have heated back seats since we will be using carseats and boosters. Plus the slightly longer range is actually something we prefer also. The extra cost isn't that much more but it's for stuff we don't need, and given we have to finance some of the purchase, we're fine with an SE.
And, also, we ordered it back in January and it's still 6 months out potentially. So it's moot anyway! :p
@@ZeromuS_ well if you like fabric seats and no heated front seats. Heated front seats is nice for cold days. The point about wheels/mileage/range is moot cuz you can easily swap them and get the better ones. Most people want bigger wheels so you probably can swap for extra cash.
114 MPGe is the electric equivalent mileage. Gas hybrid mode mileage is 52 MPG. So the comparison he did was for fully electric driving. And it really depends on your cost of electricity and gas and your driving needs and habits. You have to do your own math to get a useful comparison. At 34 cents per kwh and 6 dollars per gallon the per mile costs are 9 cents on electric and 12 cents on gas.

@@kng128 You can't 'fix' a ripped apart tire. No such thing. No such tools can be a full security policy against being stranded with a flat. I know this all too well from personal experience. No, it doesn't happen often, but when it does it is a show stopper. And in that case it is pointless, so no, i don't see it. A car without a spare is not an option at all. I know i'm not the only one with this position. It's too bad, because it looks like this rules out many great models, but i will not be seduced into a purchase that does not meet my highest priorities - reliability and security.
@@comment6864 well obviously you can’t fix-a-flat a blow out. I certainly understand your position. The worst that happened to me in the last 5 years are screws in the tread and in the sidewall. However if I were using my vehicle for towing or hauling I agree with you and a full spare wheel is obligatory.
I just found in my KIA NIRO there’s room in the back under the cargo cover is room for a ‘donut’ spare though it doesn’t come with one. I found a spare on Amazon $240 USD. I’ll probably be buying it after I verify the dimensions of both the hole and the wheel.
