Why iPhones Have A Silent Switch

  • Apple has a reputation of leaving out features and buttons on iPhone that are deemed unnecessary. The original model left out a physical keyboard which was an industry standard at the time, and since then, they’ve removed its headphone jack, and even its home button. But one thing iPhone still has is its silent switch. Something many people don’t use, especially those switching from Android, where silent mode is activated with a software button instead.

Another useful part of it is that anyone can put your phone on silent. If someone leaves their phone in a room and it starts ringing, it can disrupt the atmosphere for other people. It's cool that using this switch, they can put it on silent without waiting for the owner to come and unlock it. I've used it in such situations.

@Eugen N 1) As a long time iPhone user, I can tell just by looking at the switch if the silent mode is on or off.
And by looking at it, I mean it getting into my sight as I'm using the phone. I'm not talking about flipping the phone on its side to actually check for the color. So a permanent icon would most likely annoy people like me more than anything.
      2) You meant horizontally ↔ and vertically ↕ but nontheless, I think it's on purpose. If you had to turn the switch on and off by a vertical ↕ movement, putting the phone back in your pocket might have been enough to pull the switch.
I actually like that you really have to intend to do it in order for it to happen, it just won't by accident.

With a physical switch, you can confidentally know that everything is silent and you can switch it on or off without taking your phone out of your pocket and disrupting the people around you, say if you were at a diner. There is so much more usefulness to having a physical switch, unlike a clunky software button.

Back in the day the iPad’s had switches too. It evolved over time. But my favourite was you had the option to use it for silent mode or rotation lock. On the iPad I found that the rotation was something I needed to interact with so frequently that the switch on the side made it so I didn’t even have to think about it. @Eugen N Besides the silent switch, silencing notifications is utilized in “Do not disturb” or “Focus” mode. Others with iPhone can see that you have this enabled, as well as the user, making it hard to forget that its on.
As far as missing calls or texts, if you have “vibrate while on silent mode” turned on, the haptic engine is strong enough to let you know that a call, text, or notification is coming through with vibrations while the silent switch is on.
Also the silent switch moves horizontally from left to right. It hasn’t moved up and down since the iPhone 6 I believe, maybe even earlier. Even though you have to use two hands while holding the phone to engage/ disengage, it can be done one handed while in the pocket.

As a former lifelong Android user who recently switched to iPhone, I was skeptical of its purpose but it turns out its actually super useful, it’s a quick, easy and non-obvious way to mute the phone, I often enable it while my phone is in my pocket, you don’t even need to put your hand in your pocket, if you know which way your phone is facing you can do it from the exterior which is extra non-obvious. I also find it useful to mute game-audio while listening to music or having a video playing in PiP mode.

I love this switch. So convenient. Yet, while it allegedly existed to “reduce confusion” over which volume was being reduced, the iPhone has a terrible volume control interface for a smartphone. When I switched from iPhone to Android, one of the main things I was sad about losing was the silent switch. While shopping around for an Android, there was a time where I was set on getting a OnePlus since it has a silent switch, but I eventually ended up with a Samsung phone and although the switch was convenient, I no longer miss it and I don't feel the need to go back to it. Most of my switching to silent or off silent was done at a specific time or place, so this action is automated now, and when I change the sound mode manually, I find that it's not too much of an inconvenience to silence the phone since this can be done from the lock screen. It's a cool feature, but one that is not missed by me at all.

I tend to forget the phone in silent mode quiet open, sometimes it causes missing important call/sms/notification. For Android there are third party apps scheduling sound mode to change from one profile to another which I find very useful especially on working days. Moreover a different ringtone can also be assigned with those customized sound profiles. I use a short, single beep sound with minimum sound level under the profile name "work" so I don't miss any important call or message while not disturbing others in my near environment. Briefly, a physical button has its drawbacks along with the only advantage described in the video. If there is possibility to control sound mode also via soft button and even with a such software then it is perfect!

This video would be obsolete only if they decided to COMPLETELY remove the mute switch with no physical input replacement, or if the Action Button had been assigned to a different feature by default, possibly even placed in a different spot. That was not the case!
That is not the case, it isn’t even on all iPhones yet! The default feature and placement of the Action Button (even making it hard to reach up there) are choices that were made specifically for continuity and legacy/consistency, so that its default behavior would preserve the feature that was explained here for all users, including (and especially) those, quite possibly a majority, who will never go out of their way to change the button to something else and will keep it the way it is by default; whether that be because they are used to that or because they do not even know how to change it or what to change it to.
I also expect the button to come to the non-Pro models with the next (16) generation, but stay mains unchanged in its placement and default functionality for years to come.

I personally prefer Android on a smartphone, but I love the iPhone mute switch. I think all phones should have a physical mute switch

The silent switch was one of the biggest factors that got me to go back to apple after using an Android device for 3 years. You don’t know how important it is until you don’t have it anymore.

The new Pixel phones have a new setting, called rules.
You can set a rule for the phone ringer based on location. It is wild!
You can set the ringer on or off, based on where you are. So at work location, school and church are all off.
It doesn't discern between rooms in a building, but can resolve one building from the next.

@@feeds7672 Focus is a different thing. It's a more advanced Do Not Disturb mode that you have to turn on manually. Rules is totally different. Rules allows you to make the smartphone perform preset actions depending on your location. When I get to work, it goes to vibrate. When I leave work, it goes back to normal ringer. When I get home during the day, it turns wifi on, if it's off. When I get home at night, it goes to vibrate.
It also knows my work schedule so every morning it tells me at what time I should leave home depending on traffic conditions.

This is why I loved OnePlus' 3 stage toggle. But seeing it being removed now is very sad 😢

i use it a-lot especially at work as i seem to be inundated with spam calls and spam messages and it also carrier over as a habit from high school as you would not want your phone to ring during class

Recently switched from Android to iPhone and i personally love the silent switch! great for grabbing the phone to quickly silence it in like school and such. I enjoy its physical clickiness, too :)
