I'm back because I finished podcast 20 and I found a lot to relate to. Oh the lessons we do learn in life. You learned some young in Italy whereas I learned similar ones in the Middle East, Central Asia, etc. I'm referring to the lesson that there are places where Americans are not liked. The company I was working for in Iran was forced to shut down in the 70s, the compound where I was living in Saudi Arabia was bombed in 2003 causing deaths. Lucky for me I was on vacation out of the country at the time. I learned in Spain that they too like the Italians don't like gypsies and in France I was frequently treated much better than my African friends.. France and the US have a particular can of love / hate relationship. I could give more examples but I think we get it. That said, I wouldn't change my time abroad for anything and I constantly met welcoming, nice people. Next up episode 21 and then the rest. Thanks so much.

Calvin, me again, Victor Brown and I'm about to finish up Podcast 16: First Fights & Chalkboards. My main question is, is there any particular reason(s) why the comments for this video are turned off? The part on you fighting was hilarious as I would have never pictured you as a serial fighter. Again I'm overwhelmed by all your contact with extended family pre departure to Italy because I'm a grown ass man, and I've had very little contact with extended family. Your hate for Italian class cracks me up too. Some how I managed to get through all my US schooling without ever taking a foreign language class, not a one. I'm now almost 70 and I've been studying Italian on my own for a bit now; I've been to Italy 3 times but in places with few blacks. Funny that my very well traveled Sudanese Dr told me he had just returned from Italy. When I asked him if he saw many black people he laughed and said: "Rome is full of black people." I've been to Florence with a friend (American born) whose whole family is Jamaican and born in Jamaica. My friend's older sister has been in Italy over 20 years. She's married with an Italian and they own / run a resort outside of Florence. Do you know if you had any fellow students who actually learned much Italian? I used to have a very good friend from Cameroon whose wife, also from Cameroon, had lived about 6 years in Italy and she spoke fluent Italian. Learning languages is one of my main passions. Enjoyed the video. Next up no 17, back to Howard. I was never in the military, but I worked for a couple of companies abroad with large numbers of ex military guys so I learned a lot about military life from them. I met so many brothers abroad who'd been in the military. To be honest in some places I got tired of people assuming I was in or had been in the military. Nope, when I reached draft age the Vietnam war ended as did the draft.

Calvin I'm a brother about to turn 70 this August. How I came across you is not that important though it was by chance. I'm actually presently on episode 12 (pt 2) of your podcast. I definitely enjoy your videos and your seemingly wide range of interests, talents, and topics. I plan to get through all of your Podcast videos and many outside the Podcast.. That said, I have a question and a minor critic. Question, how have your relations been with foreigners , immigrants, etc? You were in Italy, Germany, on a soccer team with mainly Africans, etc so I wish I could hear more about your relationships with such people. Many of your courses show in keen interest in the black diaspora.I actually spent many years abroad. in Europe and other continents. My critic is for me sometimes the music gets in the way of the stories. I understand music is super important to you as it is to me, but i Feel like we don't always need background music when we're talking and especially when we're focused on listening to someone talk. Truthfully, I find the background music to be a distraction at times from what I'm really trying to focus which is what you're saying. But hey, that's just my personal opinion.
I chose to write my comment to Ep 30 thinking it might have a better shot at being read by you than if I commented on older videos. Thanks, love your stories.. It's very interesting to hear someone your age talk about his life, desires, successes, failures, goals, thoughts, etc. Now, let me get back to you at Howard

Hey thanks for reaching out. My relationships and experiences with different groups has varied. Mostly positive but there were moments both stateside and overseas that were eye openers. And some moments that I brushed over as a child but would later come to fully understand and reinterpret as an adult.
The podcast came with few lessons learned so overtime the background music begins to become much lower to the point where there’s more so a hint of it as opposed to it being too present in the mix.

@@CalvinMichaels Thank you for the feedback. You're an impressive person. I'm about to finish your video on the passing of your dad. I returned to the States in 2006, my dad passed in 2017. I was with him at the time; my sister had just left to take a break from being with him. Dad was without a doubt one of the most non materialistic people I've known. He passed at the ripe age of 96 and was pretty good health wise almost until the end. My sister and I were fortunate to have the parents we did. One thing I find fascinating with you is all your contact with extended family. My sister and I have had very little contact with extended family. I'm looking forward to more of your videos, for example the one on project 2025. Did you ever have any classes with Dr. Carr? If so, what's he like as a teacher?
Let me add something before finishing. Someone in one of your live blogs asked you if you considered leaving the States to live abroad as he was. I found your answer very interesting, and I could relate to it in many ways, and in some ways not. I lived abroad about 24 years and for the most part loved it. What I find intriguing now is black Americans are traveling abroad more than ever and even living abroad permanently. When I see the number of black Americans blogging from all over the world it does warm my heart. I've been to Africa, but I've never lived in Africa. However, I did live abroad in some places with large black populations and I consider myself lucky to have had some very meaningful and honest friendships with non American blacks abroad and here in the US. Like you said, to each his own. My best friend, also black American, came to visit me in France in 1983. A few months later I left for Spain and said friend is still in France. I agree with you Afro American culture is very strong. We're tough people. A long time ago I read something that I've never forgotten. It went something like this, lots of Americans go abroad for a few weeks, months, years, decades, etc, but in the end most return to the US to stay at some point. Peace!
