  • Papier-mache or chewed paper in French came from the land of Persia and settled in the heart of India - Kashmir, making
its presence felt in some of its monuments and buildings, in the craftsmanship of the craftsman and in its diverse culture. Sufi mystic Mir Syed Ali Hamdani brought this skill to Kashmir in the 14th century. At that time artisans used hand-made paper pulp brought from Iran and Central Asia for making papier-mache products.
In order to promote papier-mache, the Kashmir government has made it mandatory to be taught in schools and the work is protected under the Geographical Indication Act, 1999 of the Government of India.
