Beautiful and helpful 5.5 years later. I bought a used guitar with a bad switch... you got me in business again. I missed that the ground shifted to the front... so much for reading directions. THANKS Mark
That was about the 4th or 5th vid I've seen on wiring my Les Paul and You were the much more clear explaining how the switch works for someone who fears electricity ever since I grounded a 220 volt connection in the oven of my Range! Thanks a Million....
Thank you Mark. As others have mention you have produced a great video here. I was super nervous replacing the switch but because of you it was super easy.
Also wanted to add this is an instant download and save video for me I learn more from your videos than trying to figure out diagrams the practical is always best for me thanks again Sir
Thank you so much. I just picked up a new switchcraft switch for my Epiphone SG and once I pulled out the existing one, I realized I had no idea what I was doing. This video was exactly what I needed.
Thank you very much for your video, I just had problems with my cheap Les Paul copy after removing the bridge PU, its knobs and the toggle switch completely and hardwiring the neck PU to the output jack. I don't need them and like to have a cleaner look altogether. I forgot to connect the ground wires and you reminded me about that. Very helpful indeed and pleased with my results!
Very helpful. Was able to replace my buddy's switch with ease. Swapped out the broken box-type toggle switch for this type in his EP LP (metric). This video gave me the confidence to just dive right in, thank you.
Hi Mark, Brilliant Video👍👍👍. This is the Best Video for a Switchcraft Toggle Switch replacement that I have seen, Clear Instructions and Clever Tips, Thank you. Take care♥️. Melbourne, Australia.
Mark, super video. I'm not real comfortable with wiring thins but you made this simple enough that even I can understand it. Now I can put my Epi Dot back on line. Tnanks a million Jim Connally
Awesome video Mark, thank you! My Epiphone LP switch is super loose because the screw holding the post together is badly damaged from too much use so the post literally moved in all directions and at times (of course) would cut out audio. I just purchased the Switchcraft replacement from Amazon (your link made it SUPER easy!) and will reference this video again when I replace it in about one week. REALLY appreciate this video, thank you again.
That being said, do you have any suggestions for aftermarket high gain pickups for the Epi Les Paul? Something thick, meaty and crunchy (think Foo Fighters, Metallica, Green Day, etc...)
Great video brother! Outstanding! Everything broken down to a little tiny details in the mean time very simple and understandable. Even a handicapped can do it now, not only me...
Excellent video in every way. Good video closeups with easy to understand instructions. I feel quite confident now to change out my Epiphone LP switch. Thank you so much.
I'm confused a little bit. But this video was much better than the one about the Humbuckers. The wiring instructions were different. But, I have an Epi-Les Paul, and that may be the difference in the wiring. I haven't actually opened it up yet. But, I did order the Switchcrafter from the Amozon, before I saw this video. I'm sure it will work; and if your wiring is right for the Ep, I'll open up my tele and see if that wiring is like the other video. If that proves to be true, then I will have learned a lot than I expected to.
Excellent video... cheers from Toronto....I have an Epiphone Dot 3 with a 3 way Toggle switch. In the Middle position, before, I THINK Both the Bridge and Neck were turned on and I could adjust Both Volumes. Now, in the Center position, the Neck one stays Off, until I slightly open the Bridge Volume! Is this the norm??? Please advise. Thanks.
Hey man I appreciate it. My MK guitar has been acting up with the switch so I needed a little guidance in order to change it out. So once again thanks man!
Thank you for the video it was exactly what i was looking for i bought the same exact switch and was curious as to the set up and inner workings of my Epiphone. Now i need a soldering iron and im set. Thanks again rock on!!!
So I am about to install three new switches in an epiphone double neck. Two pickup selector and one neck selector. The two terminals on one side vs one on the original one confuses me. So I watched this video and I think I understand it now. The middle one on the original now goes in the other side and the ground is now the middle of the three. I think. Thanks for this video.
my epiphone casino neck pickup was cutting out, i took the switch out and squeezed the switch contacts together, its working fine again for now but the switch will eventually have to be replaced
dude my epi sg has been in and out of the shop the past year because the pickups would cut out, I thought it was the EMG pickups but i think you just solved the mystery, going to the shop tomorrow hope this is the issue
Thank you Sir for the straight forward explanation of the switch I was grinding teeth over so called diagrams before watching you video and now I have a far better understanding thank you and easier install
Great video Mark excellent explanation and technique I have an epiphone es295 that had a broken shaft it just snapped off I have purchased a Gibson switch for it and wasn't quite sure of the soldering part it was never my strong point but hey ho I'm off to the garden shed fetch my soldering iron and get the guitar up and running it's been hanging on my wall naked for about 2yrs kept putting it off to hand in to the local guitar Luther thanks tony
My 3 way toggle switch for cherry red Epiphone DOT 3.....in the centre position, the Neck pickup goes off if the Bridge pickup Volume is Zero? Is this normal? I thought in the Centre position, the Bridge and Neck pickups Volumes were independent?
I want to thank you for this tutorial video, Because of having done this with strat style and 6 pin micro switches I knew the basics so I had to riff off of what you wrote because ESP does not have a separate harness with grounds(they are wound around each wire - the pickups and the hot to the jack). This had confused me until your explanation partly clarified what was going on but you could have been a little clearer on how the ground wires function but perhaps that was to much info to throw out. Anyway the explanation of how the switch works was very easy to understand- although seemingly counter intuitive- and was the key along with the ground understanding. The bridge would mostly not work by itself or in the middle position(the neck was fine), so I would get it work intermittently but could not see why this happened. No cut wires and no obvious shorts although doing the grounds the way they do them is a mess of unsheilded wire to contend with. Finally it would work when I touched the Jack leg and the bridge pickup leg one or the other so I knew it had to do with the connection of these to sides not functioning correctly. Fortunately this style of switch from ESP has two screws holding it together(one for the pickup hot side and one for the ground side), so I loosened the screw a tiny bit from fully tight on the pickup side and no more problem for the bridge or both, but occasionally the neck cuts out(very occasionally). Good enough for now I did the Eddie switch trick to make sure I wasn't fooling myself and hopefully for a good long time no issue. Yeah and they said it was Mint when I bought it.
Hi i was wondering if you can help me , i purchase a new harness assembled harness kit for my les paul.I also purchased 1 490 and 498 pick ups, unfortunately the 498 has 5 wires and the 490 has 1 wire wrapped with a neutral and i dont know where they should be soldered.can you help me.Thanks
Good video Mark! Now it's just the tip that is broken... i saw like a pin in the middle of the ball do you think i can remove it and change the tip so i dont have to do the entire wire job?
Hello! I have a problem with the toggle switch… Its upsite down. Its meaning that when the toggle switch is up it plays the bridge and if it down.. plays the neck pickup… Any fix? Thanks a lot!
20 years in the guitar repair business. The best 3/5 way Fender type switch you can buy is a CRL. The best 3 way Gibson style toggle made is a Panasonic. The end. You can listen to old guys on Les Paul forums ramble on about how "I've never had a Switchcraft fail in xxxx years, they are the standard and will last a lifetime". BS. They are loose, sloppy feeling, the contacts easily oxidize and lose connectivity and crackle, and I've installed so many BRAND NEW in need of rebuilding or cleaning that I don't even bother anymore. Maybe the ones in the 50s or 60s were fine, but just do yourself a favor and don't bother today. I absolutely loathe Switchcraft toggles.
Hey there, I have a Epiphone Les Paul plustop pro. My guitar fell face down and the switch went in. I can't get all of my tones on the guitar now. Is it possible for me to just replace the switch and not have to rewire everything else (pickups etc.)? Thank you.
The plastic ball side of my PRS Custom 22 SE separated at the spring side where the 3 tips join the bottom spring side so the toggle flops - tried crazy glue but no luck...should I replace whole toggle switch & re solder wires or?
good video but I replaced mine not to long ago but the neck pickup is noticeably louder than the bridge is that the switch or volume knob issue? thank you
So i have a Schecter Tempest ive had it for a year and a half now and the bridge position is noticeably easier to push up and down than the neck position. the pickups dont cut out what should i do?
Just look at the diagrams and it will all make sense to what he said. www.stewmac.com/How-To/Online_Resources/Learn_About_Guitar_Pickups_and_Electronics_and_Wiring/Switchcraft_3-way_Toggle_Switch.html
are these known to be faulty sometimes even when new? i got a new switch and same problem. same exact problem = treble is fine and loud. middle and rhythm are very low or dont sound at all. looking at this i know i got the wiring right. anything else you guys think it might be?
Great videos but would have been better if explained how is that the switchcraft differ from the original epiphone switch and what makes it better? I think I'm going to replace mine :)
Hi, I just purchased a open box gibson it's new but the switch pops from the top pickup to the middle but stays in position when pushed to the bottom pickup position . My question does anyone know if it's as simple as just a new switch or in the headstock or is the guitar just a pos. The guitar was supposed to be never played. Should I just try and get my cash back thanks for any help.
Can anyone tell me what that type of wire is called? Wire containing a bare ground wire with another covered wire? Is this considered a 2 conduit wire?
I was losing power on my bridge pickup on My Epi Les Paul. I thought it was my amp but wasn't sure. i am fortunate enough to have 3 guitars and 2 amps so I started the elimination game. I rules out the chords, effect boxes, amps and the other 2 guitars. I backed the retaining nut off slightly on the selector switch and everything came back. Seems to be working fine. Should I need to replace the switch at some point, I will coming back here for sure. If anyone knows why a too tight nut on the switch would cause this, I sure would like to know. Thanks.
To. help keep those legs together for solderjng, those surgical locking foreceps(or whatever theyre called) should work well. Theyre like tiny locking pliers so theres room to lock them onto the legs without getting into the way.
Hi, kind of new to electric guitars here, any help greatly appreciated. With the switch of my Epi LP in the middle position and the bridge volume knob turned all the way down, the volume knob for the neck pickup has no effect. But when the bridge volume is up a bit, the neck volume knob works, and it works when the switch is in the up position. The bridge volume knob also works when the neck volume is turned all the way down. Is my switch broken, or am I doing something wrong?

You have to open up the guitar and remove the switch. Replace it with a new one. Some rewiring needs to be done. But that's loads of fun.

I think your video is going to help me but i wanted to ask you a question, my son has an SX Les Paul which came with the isolated box switch and it has 4 contact points, Red ( left side), White(middle),White(right) and underneath the center white that's where the ground is connected. I am changing it to an All Parts 3 way toggle kind of like the Switchcraft you have but the ground is by itself and then on the opposite side it has (2) 2 prong connectors. Don't explain it all and show 'what if' ... tell a viewer how to replace a switch. This is not understandable at all.
