Lighting White Seamless Pt. 2

- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Here is the second part of lighting a white seamless. In part one I covered the basics in terms of gear and space and demonstrated how this all works with video lights. For part two I cover doing this same thing with strobes and then go into some post production tips and tricks in Photoshop.
As with all of my UA-cam videos, there is a blog post associated with it with more information, links, etc. That's also where I spend the most time answering questions, comments, and concerns. Find this blog post here...

Thank you for watching!
PS - Apologies for the video artifacts. When OS 10.9.3 came out it broke something in OpenCL between my video cards and Premiere. It's a well documented issue that hopefully someone is going to fix really damn soon.
Do you know how rare it is to find a photographer who can teach? Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Ace photographer, master educator and all round good guy Zack Arias takes his original blogpost on lighting a white seamless background, which in itself was awesome, and totally grinds it into the dust with a SUPERB new video production spanning two parts and delivers what is surely a photographic masterclass on using off camera flash to get the classic all-white seamless look. This is part 2 of 2 and continues nicely where part 1 left off and covers how to pull this off with strobes (or speedlights - the theory is all still relevant and do-able), varying the exposures and ratios, assessing the affect of too much or too little light on the background and how that affects the contrast for the scene and subject, problem solving, mixing up the lighting for effect to create black backgrounds rather than white, and finally some simple but effective techniques to use in post production to clean up the images and expand the white/black backgrounds to give a polished final product to deliver to clients. Running at almost an hour in total these two fabulous video posts are pure gold-dust if you are looking to expand and reinforce your photographic lighting knowledge. If it's all new to you but has whetted your appetite to learn more (and it damn well should have), then I'd recommend heading over to the #DEDPXLwebsite where you'll find a ton of stuff of interest, not just on photography I might add but music, good reading recommendations, interesting videos on all manner of life topics, as well as education of the highest quality. All signal; no noise - massive respect to Zack and his team of contributors for the sterling job they are doing. Get on it people: what are you waiting for! #education #photography #lighting #offcameraflash #strobist #seamless #zackarias #dedpxl #LightingWeek
BEST LIGHTING TUTORIAL OUT HERE! THANKS A LOT. YOU ARE JUST GREAT!
and yes, I was screaming!
Really good, Helped a tone!
This video is a gold mine of information! I'm renting a space tomorrow, and this has me absolutely set up! Thank you!
The information so well delivered in these videos is an absolute must for anyone wanting to understand how light works. Especially but not only for studio work.
Zack, if you only knew how helpful this video was to me a few years back. My main focus these days is filming commercially. Electronic flash is of no help there of course, but this tutorial made me work harder with lighting techniques generally, and not to be afraid of experimentation - thank you 👍
Zack. You are amazing! All other photographers doing educational videos should strive after this format.
I love how you take the time to explain your thoughts and work flow. No rushing. No over-obsessing about gear. Just brilliant.
Hands Down, the most direct, clear cut, all meat no bones tutorial on lighting iv'e come across. Zack, Teaching is your gift...I'm looking forward to more of your videos.
This content is gold. Thank you so much Zack, it's not often you find photographers who are able to explain their craft in such intricate detail and it makes for a perfect new subscriber!
Zack you are the best. You teach in much the same way that I shoot (and how I assume most people shoot) so it is super easy to follow and pick up your main points.
Hello -- I found your channel relatively late. I´m very impressed by your tutorial, very well spoken and good simple techniques also in post-processing without a lot of fuss, just straight-forward and simple. Thanks!
Both of these White Background videos are excellent. Beautifully illustrated and explained. You are a wonderful teacher
Thanks very much.
even as a (returning) professional these tutorials have been an awesome refresher. im actually in the process of rebuilding / upgrading my studio and doing tests and these vids have made things a hell of alot easier. thanks Zack Arias. very much appreciated :)
Zack, this was a great 2 part series. What I appreciate is that you keep it simple, and to the point. And you never make it seem as though you have to have these specific brand of lights, lens or camera to get the job done.
Thank you so much for taking the time to produce these tutorials, pt.1 and pt.2. This is so well explained and shows how much you can with a minimum of equipment in a studio. You are a master teacher. This has helped me greatly.
I´ve been following you through the years and I had seen this topic before in some of yours tuts. I still enjoy watching it, I have learned a lot from you. This is true gold, Thanks
I watched these tutorials w while back but I wish I did a refresher recently before a shoot I did the other day as I made some bad mistakes. Thanks again for all your content Zack you are an amazing teacher. Haven’t seen much of you for a while, I hope all is well.
I've a shoot for which i was a little doubtful/scared and your video cleared all of my doubts , Thanks alot!!
Dude I know this was produced a few years ago but man, you crushed it! On the mark and VERY easy to learn from.
If you aren't teaching you should be! Very good, full and still straight to the point! This is amazing!
Thank you!
So glad I found these videos. Super instructional.
Glad to be of service!
This is incredible! Learned so much! Thanks Zack! Always one of my favourite educators and photographers!
This has been the best video on lighting white seamless, you're lessons are really easy to follow, Great Job and Thank You.
Dead on the money! Mr.Zack...clear, simple demo to understand and yet deep into lighting principles / huge efforts behind the scene; shooting/lighting/explaining/editing the video to bring up such an educational fine footage in Photography! masterfuly presented n delivered! THANK YOU; Sir.
Peace from Syria :)
Best lighting tutorial on YT. Thank you kind sir.
Hey Zack, I first saw you on Digital Rev TV with Kai and Loc in the PRO Photographer Cheap Camera Challenge in Hong Kong. I thought you were great. The way you interacted with with your subjects, got the shots and made people smile and laugh even with the language barrier was amazing. You took a piece of crap camera and a light and made some great photos.
Next I was watching you with Jared Polin and again you did some amazing things with lighting.
I have subscribed to your channel and watch every video you post. But I no longer watch digital rev or Jared Polin.
Keep up the great work and thanks. Doug
Thank you Doug! Doing the cheap camera challenge was a bucket list event in my life!
@@ZackAriasATL Wow how did this happen? I was watching your latest video (Burn out 01 March 11, 2020) and I could have sworn I commented in it. Oh well I'm glad that you found it. Keep up the great work. Doug
Okay, so Zac. i’m late to the party but better that than never. You may not even see this comment after all this time, however, there are a few Tubers remaining who get straight to it, don’t dazzle with with razzle or baffle with bull. I loved watching this demo / tutorial and learning from you and wanted to say thanks. I’m now subscribed and will hi alerts. Hope you’re well since making this. Thanks again.
Zack you are great! You leave something in this world. Thanks Peter
Much easy to learn from Zack!!!
Oh man...you gotta get a Cyber Commander setup....such a time saver and makes life wayyyy easier.
Fantastic!
You know the video is great when no one talks about the beautiful girl. Well done Zack! You're a life saver.
Nicely covered...Thank you very much for making elaborating and yet simple to sharing
the knowledge ...
Glad to be of service!
Part 1 was great, part 2 was fantastic :) You really know your lighting and technique and setting and post processing :) Love it.
From my experience it is great to learn shooting with hot lights and then upgrade to pro strobes. Of course not everyone has access to hot lights but if you do (second hand photo shops are great for this) you will learn a lot quicker. Thus, I'm glad that Zack did a part 1 and part 2
I am always looking at tutorials in YT and there is nothing with the quality and amount of information as these tutorials
Every time after a photoshoot, I come and rewatch these videos and catch something else I can improve. 😄 specially On part 1
You are an amazing photographer and an even better teacher. I appreciate what you do sir.
Amazing photography explanations and editing. Thanks Zak

Hi Zack. Thanks for the great "white seamless" videos, they helped me solve some issues I was having.
Zack this video is insane! Thank you so much for taking the time and thank your model too, she was great. Perfect video explaining a hard to achieve effect. You make it look so easy, I can wait to experiment with your techniques and see the results. Will this technique work on product photography on white, let's say on white products shoot on white?
Dude you are a real Professor. thanks for sharing your massive skills.
this is the best tutorial by far
thank you Zack for the inspiration and your expertise you share with us!
Thanks for this lovely tutorial, definitely a UA-cam gem. Also really surprised that you're based in Georgia? If so, great, glad to have you represent! I have a quick question, will this same lighting set up work with various shooting angles? Is it likely that I'll need to tweak the set up a bit ?
Amazing. Thank you for all the great knowledge you provided. I loved it all and the quick tips you gave in Photoshop were very helpful.

Awesome video Zack! I just wish i could find those $%?$%?$?$% white board in Canada... Home Depot don't have them here... such a PITA!! :) :) I think I'm going to travel to Plattsburg Home Depot to get some... 2h drive round trip :)
Now THAT'S a great instructional video.
Any info on the camera and lens used?
I thought the same question, but then I wonder if its kept out intentionally, as to say "Camera doesn't matter when setting up the lighting" or rather for the audience to only focus on the lighting design, the fundamentals if you will. Or he just forgot or just didnt. haha. The tutorial really made me think, so maybe he wanted, and what tools I need or don't or the priority of said tools. BRAVO Zack!
That was extremely helpful. Thank you so much. Excellent work
great tutorial, thx !
great tutorial thanks a lot! it allowed me to get an assignement and suceed effortlessly! i owe you a pint, maybe more ;)
i wanted to ask you what kind of fabric you're using for your background. it looks like it's elastic and you can stretch it to avoid creases. i used a normal paper background but i'm looking for something i can use over and over. thanks and have a nice day
