@@Freyaaamira you know a vocal performance doesn't have to be flawless everytime right? the vocal choices reflect much more than a goog vocal range or ability. Think of Fiona Apple, Mitski, or Kendrick, who have several songs with "wired" vocals and delivery that still are masterful.

this song is actually inspired by her own life. in the first monologue, she explains why she's been living like this without a home. the song is about her riding through her life and trying not to get into trouble while she's constantly at war in her mind. the ending monologue is about how she's somehow found happiness in this life with her kind of people and that she is free.

It's 100% autobiographical. Lana was born into an upper middle class family with an abusive mother. From childhood she struggled with thoughts of death and obsessive thoughts. She's talked about how when she was a child the day she learned that everyone eventually dies was one of the most troubling in her life. She said she would go around thinking "myself and everyone around me will one day be gone - I couldn't get over it." As a result she became a BAD alcoholic at a young age, when she was in high-school she went through rehab and got sent to a boarding school. In college she joined the Atlantic group which is an offshoot of AA. The group has been called a cult - members are required to dress a certain way, and the leader has been accused of sexually exploiting young women. Also important to note for her at this time - the Atlantic also forbids its members to take ANY any anti depressants or anti psychotic medication. Lana wrote a song about her relationship with the leader of her Atlantic called Ultraviolence (which has a video you should check out!) In an interview about it she said it was about someone who would take her apart and dominate /hurt her. After this she left for a summer to go build homes on a reservation in Utah- which is where the desert scenes are filmed. She described this time as the happiest in her life. Before leaving she had been in school majoring in metaphysics (she said she's interested in how humans build bridges to god), and singing in small venues like she shows here. She also said during this time in her life she was very lucky bc she used to just walk around at night and go with different people. She said she never got seriously hurt bc she's able to read people pretty well. She explored these autobiographical themes in her song Carmen off her previous record as well. So yes! Everything in the video is a representation of what she was living at the time.

These comments make my heart proud. We Lana fans are hardcore! And this is why I avoid reaction videos to Lana's work because it should not be judged. This isn't just music, it's a feeling. She curates an emotion. It almost feels unfair to judge and rate it.. which is why I think we're so protective of her because in essence we're protecting our hearts too. She speaks for a lot of us, those who get it, get it

  • @punish5r

most of lana’s music autobiographical in some way or another. she uses a lot of metaphors and stuff like that but from what i know she writes from her own experiences whether they are about herself or people she’s known. obviously she played around a lot with adding some fictional elements in her earlier music, but it all comes from some form of truth. like she said she dreamed of becoming a poet and i think that definitely shows in her lyrics and just the unique way she tells stories throughout each song.

I've lived this way since being abandoned by family at 16 after my older brothers sudden death. I was on my own, moved to LA with a suitcase. I got signed to a modeling agency. I traveled the world and lived in the moment. Sought safety in other people. I'm getting older now and yes, that kind of life is freedom but it also is a lot of loneliness. It's beautiful, immersive and freeing. But, like everything else, there is a downside. It is lonely and you don't have any roots. I can't say it's better, worse or equal to any other path. All I can say is, there is always a downside to whatever path you may choose in life. Be sure you are aware of that.

You should definitely react to “Video Games” and “Young and Beautiful” next… and if you can, do an album reaction for Born to Die! 🔥
Then continue on to her Paradise EP era songs and music videos(which this song- “Ride”, is a part of)
And then continue on to her Ultraviolence album area (which your last reaction, “Shades of Cool” is a part of)
And so on for her other albums…would love to see you react to her music and eras in order so you can really see how her music and different themes/aesthetics evolve over time. I think you’ll be very impressed! 👌💯

    Michael Moore said
"The purpose of art actually is, in many cases, to make you feel quite uncomfortable"
Watching Ride music video for the first time It made me uncomfortable bcs we know The life she is living is not good for her but yet the idea of freedom is not so bad.the She knows this herself as well. We feel sad for her yet we understand her mindset.
I LOVEEE THIS MUSIC VIDEO SO MUCH. IT'S TRULY ART.

To me the imagery is very reminiscent of the film Easy Rider. In that film two guys go on a tour across america on their motorcycles, and at one point one of the guys says something like " Man this is amazing, we made it, we are so free" but the other guy feels the complete opposite because to him this freedom has led to nothing but chaos and crime. It's like how you were saying that some people would be terrified to be that free, but other people crave that. I guess it really depends on your perspective of what freedom is. Anyway, you should watch it and lana is the queen and this song is 10/10
