    Great video, we owned a 1920's Tudor in Hyde Park, Cincinnati, Ohio and then moved to North Carolina and bought a 1930's Colonial, nothing compares to a well built, old home. We lived in Upper Arlington, Columbus, Ohio for a few years, there is a charming area of 1920, 1930's homes there. We looked at a home, a beautiful Tudor and they added a "modern" addition to the back of it, then I looked at many listings on the realtor websites and so many of the homes were enlarged in that manner, it physically revolted my senses. I do not understand why people do that and why architects and contractors would not give good guidance to these folks that do not understand what they are doing when making these costly decisions. Well, keep educating Brent, at least there is one person doing it!

    Brent, loving the series just because it’s purely interesting to me. The question I have is, if I or others were to enhance the facade of an existing house (thinking of my own house here built in the 70’s) which does not have a distinct architectural style at all, how would one go about enhancing the detail (windows, fences, doors etc) with quality pieces without it looking out of place or garish - due to the limitation of not being confined to a category of architectural style?

      The shape, mass, massing, roof pitch, and roof line of your house will dictate what is appropriate for elaboration Unfortunately, these characteristics hugely define what style a house a is and are prohibitively expensive to change. You probably can't take a ranch or split level and turn it into a revival style. You can probably make it more mid century modern.

      Cool, thanks for watching and commenting. Your dilemma is valid and like Sean has commented it could be hard, here's why. First, I suspect your 70's house is in a 70's neighborhood. If I imagine your house on a street, and I'm driving through your neighborhood, I have an expectation for what I am going to see. If you change your home to a Period Revival home, it could be jarring to the the street scape. Second, as a ranch style home, they are typically long and linear. The Period Revival home is taller and less wide. You will have a challenge "selling" this look, even if it is well executed. Finally, some Ranch style houses already lean in an architectural direction. Is your home modern and cutting edge or does it lean in the direction of say a Colonial Revival ranch home. Personally, I would play up the best part of it's 70's vibe and if you want a Period Revival home, I would go find one and switch. Best of luck!

      @@BrentHull Thanks guys for the comments. Good food for thought and that comment about driving through and the expectation of what one would expect to see is an interesting point. Keep up the good work.

    Very interesting. Thank you, as always.
    I think we had something similar happen in Australia in that period; although, we lacked the French and Spanish styles. The local colonial houses dominated and were heavily adapted for the climate. Usually made of timber, up on stumps, with verandas around 1, 2, or 3 sides. But in the midst of all of this was a disguised Georgian influence. Central door and hallway. Symmetric windows and rooms with panelled doors, etc.
    The picture you used as an example of “colonial” revival style was Georgian, wasn’t it? That particular house is my all time favourite at present.

    I wonder if the imposition of the income tax affected what we could spend, therefore promoting factory houses

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  3 роки тому +1

      Its a number of factors. Most happen because of the lack of new housing after WWII. William Levitt and others start building cheap and fast. We lose sight of the craft of home building and focus more on the cost/sq. ft. The most house for the least amount of money. My 2 cents.

    Why wasn’t there a 1930 edition? Is there a back story?

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  2 роки тому

      Mostly because of the Great Depression in 1929. The advertising and promotion in most building trade catalogs is really cut back after 1930. Thanks!

    what style are sun rooms part of? Which style of home would a sun room look appropriate in?

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  2 роки тому

      Good question. Historically sunrooms were called Conservatories. These could go back 200 years or more. I think as long as this new room picks up the details and design ideas of the existing home it should work. Good luck.

    I think house were built better because income taxes were lower - more money per job rather than housing as a volume biz

    I believe that mid century houses are nicer than modern houses for numerous reasons. I am not including craft made houses today.
