As far as I know, Harry didn’t even know what Margaret Krusemark looked like before he was going to his palm reading session with her, but he obviously knew when he was on the trolley. That was Johnny persona, taking hold.
I was just watching your Angel Heart videos last night, mesmerized by the intrigue and atmosphere that this story inparts. Great content, and great to see you've just released a new one!
Consumption of hearts is an ancient ritual and I wish we could find the real world occult sources for these practices I believe they will offer a big insight. The name of a film is after all very significant in its understanding. In the Harlem church there is so much heart imagery...
During my first watch, I did not understand much. Of course, that scene with the mirror and seeing Rourke crying took me on a rail coaster ride. I instantly thought that it was a masterpiece right there. OMG! I believe it's only thanks to Rourke and Alan Parker who was able to extract those emotions from him. Without Rourke, I don't think the movie would have worked. Someone could say that De Niro was good. Nope, it's not his best role. The scene with the child and De Niro with grown nails. Meh. Not good. Him eating that egg? Yeah, probably. But it's not even close to Rourke crying in front of his reflection in the mirror. Just step back to see it in perspective. AH's plot is just another horror story, yes, inventive with a twist and so on. But it would never have gotten under your skin without mentioned ingredients. I agree it's a pretty interesting question "What Did Favorite Remember?". How exactly the whole concept works? And because of the scene at the mirror, we intuitively all have some vague sense of what it could be. But that sense is never complete, because it runs away from us, exactly like the horizon. That sense hides deep inside in the maze of what we call our soul. Rourke can repeat as many times as he wants that he knows who he is, even without all that devil possession layer. I think that evil someone sitting inside Rourke just shaped it for us, gave it a form, and made it absolutely obvious: I know who I am! No. You don't.
I totally can't accept the fact that it's still recognizable Johhny and especially his eyes didn't change. Everyone of the circle must have recognized him.
This is the best Angel Heart series I've ever seen. Great job, brother! I'm glad to hear that u recovered from your throat infection...Did u know that Mickey Rourke lost his voice making this movie? When he yells "Who was the boyyy?" and "I know who I am!" u can hear his voice breaking lol
It could happen to any one of us.. living with few to no memories of the horrific atrocities we were either subject to or committed ourselves against others. How can we be sure that our own buried memories may or may not impact our present... or our eternity, as it did Johnny's? That is why this movie stands out to me: amnesia due to trauma is very, very real. Unlike a horror movie based on fanciful story lines, Angel Heart deals with the literal hell memories can turn into.. or lead us to have to suffer.
I do not know why your videos appeared in my feed: but I’m going to try to read the book. In the 80s, when I saw the film, I had no idea that this was based on a book.
(1 of 2) Many thanks for your "Angel Heart" posts!! I love them and how in depth you get with them. I would love to see you do one of the opening scene. To me, that scene seems out of place with the rest of the movie!!
Movies about people suffering from amnesia are always complex, and sometimes the victim does form another personality if they are left in an alien environment that doesn't help them regain their previous memories. This can be seen in other films like Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, or The Long Kiss Goodnight with Gena Davis and Sam Jackson. Great video!
I like how you mentioned identity theft at the end, as what Favorite did to Angel was a pretty brutal form of it. While I do agree the movie was pretty faithful to the book, there were differences too. Cyphre had a larger role in the book. In the movie, he was more of a mystery.
I always thought that Favorite purposely gave the Nazi's his location to bomb (telling what ever convent lie would work) so as to create believable story to throw off Cypher. But I always thought that the spell was meant to throw of the Devil himself. So Favorite's personality was hidden behind Angel, Angel's personality (maybe even his soul or part of his soul) was in control. But in reality Favorite was always hiding in Angel's mind with one hand on the wheel so to speak. Able to reassert control when needed and then Angels mind would create a delusion to make up for lost time when Favorite was control as Angel would probably black out during it. Cypher's plan was to force Favorite out enough to get Angel in trouble and eventually executed for murder. The last seen was the vale finally dropping and the Angel personality being released from Favorite as Favorite descended into hell.
Harry had no memories of either man when he returned from the war. It had to be dragged out of him. Thats what Louis was doing to him once he realized he wasn’t in a coma.
2 of 2 question I've always had was about the procedure. Even if he did outsmart Louie, wouldn't he still be banned from Heaven, since he committed murder? So, either way, he'd still wind up with Cyphere?
I have another question. If both souls existed in one body, and the Angel was the dominant one, when Harry Angel met Louis for the first time, wouldn't Johnny try and steer Harry away?
Johnny and Harry had different gaits Who was the victim in the opening scene? [That was the woman who had gotten him pics of Johnny Favorite, who delivered those pics to Harry in a bar.] Spider died before Johnny arrived in Louisiana. You can see Spider and Evangeline at the Voodoo ritual seated apart from the living. Also people from the Harlem Church attended the Louisiana Voodoo ritual. The ‘giving of the nose shield’ was flagrant.
I felt no sympathy for him. He made his bed and now must pay the price of eternal dammination and suffering. There are some lines in life I will not cross. I don't want to put myself beyond redemption. I do believe in my own way. I always believed that if Johnny Favorite had truly repented and aske for God's mercy and intervention he might have had a chance. I bet it didn't even occur to him.
The entire premise is either misunderstood or complete nonsense. The film was made nonsensical by determination or due to interference from the Producers. But to run with nonsense is another thing entirely.
This is my voice 7 weeks into recovery.
Come back stronger. Love your channel and content.
What are you recovering from? Great video again! Keep pumping them out.
Upper respiratory infection. Doctor put me on steroids and antibiotics.
@@CineG Glad you're feeling better!
You sound like an Angel.
Happy that you're recovering! Please gives us more Angel Heart content! It's one of my favorite movies ever! Yeah...favorite...eheh

Honestly I like listening to you talk about the movie more than the movie itself. The same goes for The Ninth Gate.
Loving your videos and analysis. Intriguing and well scripted. New Angel Heart content is always a treat 😊
This is why I subscribed to your channel.

Harry/Johnny was dark, violent and mean in the way he interrogated the various witnesses, even before the murders.

That is the moment Cyphre tracked down Favorite. The poor woman was just a passing fancy for him. (The cat didn't make it through the night either)
Love your videos...having said that, I love the book better than the film

Johnny Liebling would go to hell but Lucifer would have to leave Harry Angel behind
Great movie based on a great novel. M. Rourke, is here in possibly (that's my opinion) his best performance.

Fantastic. You nail so much. Have you read the sequel?

Favorite may have been raised by a Catholic orphanage, he was a follower of Obeah. The Obeah heavens is out of my reach. Out of Favorite's reach too.
Sounds like Hell was a place that Johnny could get used to
So Harry's body was actually Johnny's body with Harry's memories?
Yes
I have another question. If both souls existed in one body, and the Angel was the dominant one, when Harry Angel met Louis for the first time, wouldn't Johnny try and steer Harry away?
Very scary movie
Johnny and Harry had different gaits

So if it was still Favorite's body why did no one recognize him?
Consider that they all recognized him and pretended they didn't.
His face got physically messed up in the war and needed facial reconstruction surgery.
A evil unwise version of john Constantine
Alas... how terrible is wisdom when it brings no profit to the wise, Johnny?

the parts with special effects were pretty damn corny tho
