Hot syrup on a hot sponge. That's the way the syrup will be absorbed completely, it spouse to be soft & sicky not hard cake, it's the first ancient form of Backlava cake , biclawa or harressa cake in Syria, though Middle Easterns tend to use sugar syrup on it rather than honey.

Agree, and it's not even for a meal that serves 6 or 8, it's an unnecessary pudding. I've just spent £6 plus on a litre of olive oil ( cheap one ) and expect to get a month out of it.
Sainsbury's Extra Virgin Olive Oil is £7 per litre, so £1.40 for the 200ml. Sainsbury's butter is £1.69 for 250g. If we assume we'd use 200g of butter, that's £1.36 if I've got my maths right, so it's basically the same price.
I think the point is that the oil or butter could be put to better use. Lovely pudding but perhaps for a special occasion?
