Another tip for cider (hard) apples is if the pips have darkened.

This video was perfect and it answered a lot of our questions! We are very excited to pick from a few apple trees for the first time this year. Have you ever used a starch testing kit to check apple readiness? Thanks, David and Rachel from CFS!!

Thanks, we are glad you found this video helpful! The starch test can be useful if you want to document a specific harvesting window, but those tests can be time-consuming when you could just take a bite!

My apples are not sweet whenever I pick them from a tree, what could be missing, or which fertilizer do I need to improve them?

Hi Michael, fertilizer might not improve the flavor of your apples, but it could improve the overall health of the tree and quality of the fruit. It could just be the variety that you are growing - some apple's flavor actually improve while in storage. Do you know what variety of apple tree you have?

How does frost affect trees that are ready in late October? Frost hurt the apples? South central IN. Zone 6a. First average frost is October 17 but have had frost earlier. Thanks!

Hi there! Your apple harvest should be OK so long as the temperatures don't dip below 28 degrees F. At that point, the apples could be damaged. I hope that helps!

Hi Dolly, no I do not, sorry! Although we do offer young whips that can be espaliered and trained to your preference. Good luck in your search!

If the seeds are dark....that's another way to tell if the apple is ripe. My 2 cents. 🙂
