I have heard that song so many times, never paid any attention to it. The DJ spoke before the song about who sang it and what it was about. It has this quality about it that is mesmerizing and now i truly enjoy hearing it. I was as surprised as the day I learned JJ Caley wrote ‘Call me the Breeze’ and who he was. Just goes to prove you can always learn something about music.

Fleetwood Mac's very first U.S. Top 40 album was with Welch (not Kirwan, not Kirwan/Welch, and not Buckingham)/Nicks). So Welch's contributions to the Mac sound were not 'unremarkable', as some claim.

    • @thelastperfectman4139
      @thelastperfectman4139 5 років тому +10

The Welch incarnation of Fleetwood Mac very much developed the template of the later Buckingham/Nicks version. His melodies and pop sensibilities really changed Fleetwood Mac and set the stage for later albums like Rumours.

    • @steveherman190

Bob Welch and Christie McVie were the 2 lyrics writers for Mac. Moved FMac past the Jazz Peter Green era. Don't get me wrong, the Peter Green era was awesome. But the jazz scene was fading and Bob and Christie wrote some memorable music for the transition.
The gig Bob was talking about during this interview was his band at the Roxy in Hollywood in Nov or Dec 1981. It was billed as Bob Welch and His Friends. Stevie Nicks in a mini shirt, Mick, a very drunk Ann Wilson (Heart) Bob Weston, Howie Leese (Heart) the beautiful Christie McVie, John was their also. I had tickets for the first nite's show, got there late, first come seating, we sat behind the keyboards w the a 6 inch wide table sitting on a toothpick. LOL What a great evening.

He went off on a provoking female reporter on the side. Probably paid to do the sticking up on behalf of the R&R Hall o Fame.

If Fleetwood Mac goes into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Bob Welch goes with them - it's that simple, folks! Bob was a major contributor toward The Mac's sound & composition, as he wrote a good number of songs during Welch's five-year tenure with the group from 1971 through 1975. I miss Bob, as he was a rather unique, one-of-a-kind individual & musician. Rest well, Bob.

You're probably more correct than you realize. Prior to leaving FM on good terms, it was Bob who insisted on moving FM's home base to Los Angeles.
Bob felt that FM needed to be part of the California music scene that was happening in the 70s. Some people today call it "The L.A. sound" and Some call it "Yatch Rock". I call it great music.
Bob Welch insisted on moving FM to L.A. because he thought it was their way forward. As it turned out, Bob would only record one FM album (Heroes Are Hard to Find) in Los Angeles before he left the band for personal and professional reasons.
However, it is specifically because FM followed Bob's wishes and his professional advice, that Mick Fleetwood ended up discovering Lindsey Buckingham in a California recording studio and later hiring him. Lindsey famously insisted on bringing Stevie with him and Mick finally agreed.
No American Bob Welch moving his English band to L.A. and there's no Mick Fleetwood roaming around recording studios in California, looking for a guitar player and there's no Lindsey and Stevie joining Fleetwood Mac.
Bob Welch wrote the bulk of the songs on his five FM albums. Bob Welch helped keep FM going and helped keep them at least relevant during their difficult transition from a Blues band to a Pop Rock band. Bob Welch is the strong link and the linchpin to the super stardom of Fleetwood Mac, period.

BW wrote and produced most of the Fleetwood Mac material 1970-1973 and all of the best pre-Stevie Nicks songs for Fleetwood Mac. The band would have dissolved in 1971 or 1972 without his carrying them. We would never have heard of Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks would still be taking orders at the local diner. Listen to the other songs from early albums that were written by Mick Fleetwood or John McVie. Oh wait - they didn't write any. BW got 4 songs into the top 40 charts with his solo albums even with many radio stations honoring a blackout request by Mick Fleetwood because Welch was suing him for unpaid back royalties. Which Fleetwood later settled out of court and paid up on. One of my co-workers was an aspiring cover artist and met with BW backstage and eventually got hired per recommendation by BW. Said he was one of the coolest guys he met in the rock industry.

  • @TheGreatAlan75

I think it's ironic that the guy who brought that melodic pop style to Mac is the only person who didn't get inducted. It was Bob, not Danny , who brought the California sound. It's just stupid he was omitted because he wanted the money they owed him and he sued. Bob deserves it more than mick and John, they don't even write songs!! Peter named the band FM because he didn't want his own name in there. It's funny that the most replaceable two in fleetwood Mac are fleetwood and Mac

Bob Welch saved FM. They were over. Bob came along and 1. Gave them their American rock sound (California sound) as they had no sound since Peter green left and the the Blues was dead. He 2. Convinced the band to move to America. 3. Brought the mysticism slant to the songs (hypnotized and future games) . It was Bob, NOT Stevie nicks. Bob is actually the ONLY one who deserves to be in the HOF. Fleet wood and mcvie have NO talent. Buckingham nicks continued the sound that BOB invented for FM . Bob sold millions of albums as a solo artist. None of the others could do that. Nicks sold millions but she doesn't write the music to her songs so she don't count. BOB WELCH IS THE ONLY MAC MEMBER WHO DESERVES TO BE IN THE R&R HOF .

fleetwood and mcvie are a monster rythym section. There contemporaries or any real musician would agree. So your "talentless" comment loses you even more respect. I would delete your comment.

I was overstating the case. My point was that the rhythm section here write none of the songs. They aren't the talent. Anyone can do what they do. Bob Welch should be in the hall of fame , not those two. So there

+Alan Lloyd anyone cannot do what they do or did..are you a musician? if you are you will know how an extremely solid rythym section can propel a group forward to incredibly ear pleasing heights. john paul jones and john Bonham took a back seat to page and plant with zeppelin but they were still immensely important to the group dynamic. without fleet wood and mac there isn't any fleetwood mac. that being said, Bob welch does deserve to be in the hall of fame.

What Alan is saying is that if you took out McVie and Fleetwood, could they be replaced by any rythym section, yes. You never hear their names mentioned when you're talking about the best players, from a complex musical standpoint. If they are so good, could you put them in Rush and it sound the same? No way, Ged and Neil blow them off the stage. McVie and Fleetwood are like the Stones bandmembers, save Charlie and Mick Taylor, good for their own style, but pale in comparison to more talented musicians.

Fleet wood and mcvie got lucky that Peter green named the band after them. They have no talent. Anyone can do what they do, yet they seem to think they call the shots. Without the songwriters they would be bartenders. They are unforgiving for excluding Bob Welch, the best singer songwriter they ever had

Yes its disappointing that Bob didn't get into the R.R.H.O.F. with 'Mac in 1998, but there is a bit of a backstory there. In 1994, Bob sued the band for back royalties.
Bob received a settlement, but in doing so, unfortunately removed himself from any future consideration with Fleetwood Mac!! Yes, the lawsuit won him money(a lot of it supposedly), but in bringing legal action, he removed himself from rock immortality. So do you take the money, or go for rock immortality in the Hall? It would be a tough call for some...

acgillespie Bob was in a lot of physical pain primarily (and emotional pain, both at that level go hand in hand) and prescribed a mind altering drug to help “ease” the pain. Rich, poor, blind, or deaf. Rock star or janitor. Chronic pain is debilitating. Extremely debilitating in a lot of cases. How is that remotely related to his chosen career for paying the piper? Please explain.

Well put Air Sailor you made it quick and extremely accurate. I AM a chronic pain patient with 2 rods and 14 screws for a cervical spine ,and am going in for my fifth surgery in 6 years, this one a shoulder replacement. NO one knows or feels another persons pain, unless they've walked in their shoes. It cripples both the body and mind.It is a very dark an dangerous place that ANYONE can find by a twist of fate, like a car accident caused by a drunk driver, or a careless texter,or falling off a bike...something seemingly harmless. My chronic pain friends and I pray that most will ever understand the debilitating nature of chronic pain, because sadly if you do,your are part of a club that NOBODY wants to be in.
Stay strong pain warriors all over the world.God bless each and all of us.
      Peace Mr Welch,no judgment here.
      Just love
      Sincerely,
      John D
