  • Our most dramatic episode yet. Not much goes to plan as five cars start and only three finish when we take on the Vic High Country in the wet over the Easter long weekend

Terrible with the rollover, but a great recovery effort. Better luck on the next VHC run!

    Lucky that everyone was safe.
Easter 2023 was't kind to me either. I busted my transmission on Blue Rag, on the way back; on Friday.

I suppose leaving ABS/ Traction Control on makes sense on paper, but in reality Not!

Oh boy. I'm not a regular UA-cam commenter but this was like reliving a nightmare. Did the same thing in an 08 BT-50 (silver too, so almost identical...), minus the rollover. Hit a fairly innocent looking waterbar on a steep but fairly well graded track, wouldn't have been worth a second glance in the dry, but with a bit of moisture it was super greasy right at the crest. After a couple of steady attempts, went again with a little more right foot until it got hung up again. Did the rookie move (in hindsight) and hit the brake pedal, which presumably from the extra wheel speed caused abs to engage and the pedal went rock solid while we very quickly started going backwards down the hill. Same deal, once that momentum was up there was no stalling out. Managed to grab the handbrake, which felt like it did a fifth of fuck all, however on the second waterbar back down it was just enough to bring the shitshow to an end. Pure luck that I got away with nothing more than a damaged pair of jocks. Learnt to pull the abs fuse whenever things were possibly going to get hairy, but that's not foolproof either. Although I'm still pretty bloody shy about the hairy stuff after that.
Sorry about the car, but glad there were no injuries. Hopefully Blake can put it behind him and get back into it. I'll never forget that feeling, it's almost surreal.

That must have been a very steep hill for that ute to be in low range reverse, and presumably driving through the brakes, and get to that speed.

@@wewentthatawayadventures Looks like a - went for the clutch and not a stall/stop and recover.
Always very easy to judge in hindsight and in the panic of the moment, so easy to get it wrong.
Fortunately it could have been and wasn't a whole lot worse.
I'm an accredited instructor in 4WD techniques ( Victorian based ) and we try to explain to students what can go wrong
throughout our courses. This is a particularly graphic and well shot example to show how quickly and easily things can happen.
Question - would you allow me to use an edited version of this as an instructional demonstration?
      Cheers
      John

Plenty of great spots to set camp for a few days by a river. Don't need to driving around for for three days.
That bloke who lost it on the track was smoking the tyres before sliding backwards.

🤔 why didn’t he take it like the jeep..slow and steady 🤷‍♂️

    • @wewentthatawayadventures
      @wewentthatawayadventures  Рік тому +2

Because the jeep and the Dmax are both twin locked with both lockers engaged, the ranger was unlocked therefore struggling for traction

@@wewentthatawayadventures Now I watch it again I can see it started to fail when the front wheel lifted off the ground, so I guess it's because it has less flex than the Jeep and the it was probably unlocked at the front?
I actually run at 10psi or even less on these tracks in winter. If you can get the Icon Innerlock Rebound wheels, I highly recommend 👍 (I have no affiliation but they're awesome).

Good idea not to take novice 4x4 drivers on tracks like that in the wet & have all your safety gear checked & working before the trip
