  • Complicated or not, it does not really matter how many features a V8 does have. Once proper engineering is not applied, there are going to be troubles with it. Generally, V8s are engines to be proud of pleasing owners' lives with power, lovely noise and trouble-free maintenance, but not these V8s...

      it mostly depends on how often you change the oil in those engines, im a happy owner of n62b44 and i must say that its not as much pain in the ass as it is shown in the video, its not true that you need some qualified mechanic to work with it, im working on my intake valve right now, that means i need to take off whole intake cause the valve is located behind the intake, this is my first "serious" job on this car since 2 years of having it. The n62 with turbos in it is the real pain in the ass, and more pain for the wallet to get it fixed

      The n63 is a grenade, the N62 has some seal issues, but is an otherwise stellar engine. The biggest issue with the N62 is hack mechanics.

    • @supergosciu4590
      @supergosciu4590 2 роки тому +9

      @@AnonyMous-jf4lc thats right man, seal issues are caused by the operating temperature in those engine, for example, there are same aftermarket thermostats which are opening when the coolant reaches 95°C, the factory one opens at 105°C, but at this point engine oil temperature is around 130°C and this situantion makes the seals "hard" and finally, they start to leak oil, just like valve stem seals or crankshaft oring seal. I hope that you understood me, im from Poland, my English May be not very good, but its nice to speak someone from across the globe who knows these engines. Take care buddy

    I love how GM in this time frame(late 90's/00's) designed the LS series V8 engine with what was considered inferior technology, cam in block, 2 valve head, pushrods, rocker arms, etc. Yet produced similar horsepower and a shitload more low end torque compared to chain/belt driven 4 valve DOHC that was considered state of the art at the time. Those LS based engines were super reliable and durable to boot, hell they even got decent gas mileage considering their application. And GM designed the block/general design to be tinkered with, its crazy how much power people have gotten out of that engine block/head design.

    Let us not forget the Volvo 4.4 V8 built by Yamaha. The early engines would have the balance shaft bearing crap out and it would jump time and destroy the engine. They later "fixed" the issue, but nevertheless, for such a smooth and strong engine, you have an Achilles heel lurking deep inside on that balance shaft bearing.

    @triumphstagdriver 2 роки тому +7

    I knew the Stag V8 was going to be in this list. A few comments to bust the pub myths: Single row timing chains is not a problem. BMW and MB have used them for years with no issue. The problem arose with the Stag when shortly after production started the bean counters prescribed cheaper parts which meant crap parts that stretched in 25k miles. Nowadays people fit BMW chains and no more problem. The water pump was no higher than that on the 2000/2500 models which had no problem with over heating. Again, cheap parts dictated by the bean counters and in this case it was crap head gaskets. Once those went and drank your cooling obviously it would run dry. However the same would happen on many other cars of the era had their gaskets go bang. Water pump was also a request from SAAB sue to the modular character of the engine with its 4 cyl sibling. Their application was reverse fitment in the car and thus no space to hang a water pump off the front - something that Triumph actually did design for initially. Widened bores bit is bullshit as the Dolly 2 litre has even bigger bores and they don't have any issues with cooling. What I will give you is the head studs at 20 degrees - but they did that to aid production as then the head could be fully built up with correct valve clearances before fitting to the block. It isn't really a problem as described in the video (warping heads) but rather the fact that they are studs in a dissimilar material head and when there is a leak - as often occurred due to alforementioned gaskets leaking - then you would get corrosion going on which caused studs to be extremely difficult to remove. Consensus is that the design was overall fine if not a bit ahead of its time but the downfall is mechanics having no experience with them doing all sorts of things that these engines do no tolerate along with cost cutting on the part of the factory after the initial production was underway. Build a Stag engine with quality parts and it will be fine. Build one with crap parts and/or neglect it and it will bite hard.

You’re right about DPF, once diesels started getting more complex the reliability plunged. I still remember what he paid for each one since we hardly ever got new vehicles. The Ram was a dually ext cab 5 speed for $21,000, and the Ford was a dually, 4 door XLT automatic for $32,000. Even adjusted for inflation that’s pretty cheap

The same with timing chains, etc. So far the engine is running without issues, oil consumption drops to 1l for 5k km, no leaks. BUT there are many issues with the cooling system. The expansion tank cracked, many hoses too. This issue is related to higher water temperatures and bcs of that it cause a very high water pressure. Beside that it is a fantastic engine with an amazing sound if paired with a custom exhaust.

    The Chevy 350D almost single handedly destroyed the diesel market in the United States... it wasn't until Ford put the 6.9 Liter international engine in trucks that it started to come back. Neighbor down the street when I was a kid had a caddy with that hunk of shit in it. I was walking to the bus stop one morning and saw this long oil streak down the road and as I walked around the corner I found his caddy smoking with him walking back to the house. What an incredibly stupid motor design.
    What's even more impressive about that failure is that GM had the Detroit Diesel group, which made literally bomb proof 2 stroke engines... how an engine that bad made it out of their doors can only be explained by management utter incompetence. Having worked in industry for 25 some odd years now I've seen it first hand so today, yes, I can totally understand how it happened. Some Jackoff higher up made a sales presentation with no input from engineering as to what's actually possible with technology found on earth, pitched it to the board of directors who are dumber than a box of moldy dog shit, and presto a mechanical abortion is born!

Aside the general advice of not buying used Land Rovers, the fact is that the Supercharged V8 is quite reliable - that also applies to the Jags. • @qwiklok
      @qwiklok 2 роки тому +2

      @@oskarniklas5061 The exhaust is very quiet, hardly hear it inside. It does have a different sound unlike anything out there. It sounds like a purring kitten, European, un American. The reason has to do with 4 cylinders have a 4" longer exhaust path. Mix that with conventional 4 and the different result. It is a very smooth engine, but has a pleasant warm barely noticable hum that is almost a delightful back rub.It says, I'm alive, let's go for a ride and the joy is quite real.
      The experience is well, different. Sure lots of cars have more power, smooth, noisy, rumbling, torquey, whatever, but this is unique. When it hits near 4000, it just explodes with predictable constrained power, like it comes alive big time. I've had it to 210 kph and, damn, that's fast. it is limited to 250.
      I've pulled 3500 lb trailers for 2000 miles at 70 mph, up long 8 mile BC mountain roads, got maybe 12-15 mpg. Otherwise 24-28. Uses a little oil, maybe 2 qts in 10k miles. Starts instantly in -30c.
      The repairs referred to in the video are entirely due to operator neglect. It is one of the best designs. But expensive to make.
      The W12 is the same engine with 4 more pistons and 2 turbos, 500 hp. The W16 is the same but double in size, 4 turbos, 1,500 hp. And $3m. I'm happy.

    I drove a BMW N62 4.4 V8. It had the leaking crossover coolant pipe problem, although the loss of coolant was still very limited.
    After buying the car, we soon found out that the engine would remain stuck in a kind of 'emergency program' after 1st start. A sensitive driver immediately recognises this by the gas being 'jumpy' and coasting when releasing the gas. I can imagine that an average driver doesn't notice, especiall when going above 80 km/u where the engine gives constant power and the strange behaviour isnt prevalent anymore. Anyway, the fix was starting the car, drive 100m, stop and shut off the engine and restart. Most of the times, the engine started in 'normal modus' the 2nd time, running butter smooth and just the way it was intended.
    I suppose that N62 engines start to express this behaviour somewhere between 100k-150k km. The general idea is that the engine starts in open loop with valves opening at maximum and on the throttle valve and going to closed loop within 1,5 minuts with throttle valve closing with the engine software fully taking over. From my Internet investigation at the time it is my understanding that this behaviour (not being able to go from open loop to closed loop) starts to occur when the valve adjustment system (Valvetronic?) sligtly wears down. The engine parameters get out of the known fields upon starting throwing the engine in 'emergency mode', never going to closed loop.
    Solving this problem is a nightmare, I understand. Supposedly, there are many, many different variants of this valvetronic thing and you need the exact right one. Parts costs a cool €3k and then you still need to install them. A fine example of overengineering. Looks great on paper, a nightmare in real life when the system goes off the rails.
    My general idea is that owners not recognising this, run the engine in 'emergency mode' for long periods of time, causing the engine to run hotter than intended. This leading to rubbers/gaskets/seals wearing down quicker than expected and eventually causing things like the dreadful crossover coolant pipe leak. With our car, it was under control and did not get any worse over 60.000km that we drove with the car. Of course, we had to perform the starting ritual every time, also after fueling up on the high way.
    Leaking gaskets are BMW generic. The N62 is no exception.
    Occasionally, it threw out some nice grey oil fumes when reving after more than a minute of idle. Probably oil leaking through the valves, burning off when reving.
    Besides the starting ritual, I loved the engine. Smooth, good torque at low revs. Although my current B58 engine is better on all aspects, I do miss the V8 sound and linear power curve. Regardless of the problems, I wouldn't want to have missed driving this thing for the world. I got rid of the car when I had more moisture in the car than outside due to leaky door rubbers (a known E60/61 problem).
