    Thanks for the time you put in to help everyone out Dave...a practical, cohesive, systematic series of videos on the use of a compass is much needed...youtube has a ton of vids on knots, shelters, gear, clothing, shoes etc but surprising there is a not really much content as far as how to use one of the most important tools of all, the compass...thanks again Dave your efforts are much appreciated.

    I assume we will get a tutorial on magnetic North vs. grid/map North? Most people never talk about declination and that can really get people confused. Great video Dave, short, accurate, to the point!

    Thanks,
    You are correct.
    You need to understand how to use a good compass to get your bearings or what's the point of having one..
    Too many people get lost in out back Australia and die because they don't bring one with them or understand how to use one..!!!!
    Gold prospector.

    Very cool. Just yesterday my brother asked me if I knew how to use a compass properly. Unfortunately, I had to say no. Now, at least I have a clue.

    There's probably alcohol in the water as I have never seen my compass freeze in the winter...

      @Mak933 7 років тому

      ArneTW Most likely not alcohol but more likely a water and glycol solution.

    I don't know why, but those baseplate style compasses are so confusing to me. I prefer the military style where heading numbers rotate with the needle, so much simpler to me.

    • @daveh7720
      @daveh7720 7 років тому +1

      Baseplate compasses are a little easier to use with a map for people who aren't very experienced. That's why the Boy Scouts teach orienteering with them. A few degrees of error isn't a big deal when you're walking toward a destination, because you're going to stop and take a new bearing now and then.
      Military compasses are better when you need an accurate azimuth bearing without actually walking to the destination. Because you're using the compass itself to sight a target, you can then give that bearing to someone else, like artillery fire control. Boy Scouts are rarely required to call an artillery strike.

      I wanted to build a model of an atomic bomb for my Atomic Energy merit badge, but the Scoutmaster wouldn't let me.
