    After a bit of reading, the general who came up with the idea to use Tarrare as a spy was Alexandre de Beauharnais. A political figure and general who would be sent to the guillotine 1 to 2 years after this incident due to being blamed for a poorly defended siege and being an "aristocratic suspect". A very interesting thing about Alexandre is that he was Josephine's first husband. As in Empress Josephine, the wife of Napoleon. So yeah.

    One thing to keep in mind, back then most available "eggs" were pheasant eggs, or other similar eggs, and were much smaller. Even chicken eggs of the time were a bit smaller too. So with modern AA white chicken eggs at the market, it would be literally impossible to fit 12, even with a genetic abnormality, but eggs at that time were smaller so it could be true in that sense.

    As for the mental illness part (I'm just speculating), if he wasn't digesting things and getting the nutrients he needed, Tarrare would have essentially been starving constantly no matter how much he ate. That could have had an effect on his brain development throughout childhood. Also, anyone who's dealt with starvation knows that it messes with your head. Once someone hits a certain point, they're willing to eat just about anything including other people. It's tragic to imagine someone spending their whole life in that state.

  • @LisaMarieParadee
    @LisaMarieParadee 2 роки тому +16

    Tarrare 's eating disorder reminds me of Pica, a disorder in children where they eat things that are not edible such as glue, paper, or in extreme cases, bizarre things such as spoons, or nails.

  • @BurdieFromHell
    @BurdieFromHell 3 роки тому +9

    I feel like the "mental illness" part is more a result of the constant starvation he felt himself going through. Hunger makes people do crazy things to survive, he probably felt like he was just trying to make it another day by eating what he could get.

    Although i don't have nearly this level of difficulty, i also have a hyperactive metabolism. It's got a facy name but i can never spell it properly.
    Anyway, i have these spikes in my metabolism, typically it was when i was a teenager and due to the hormonal imbalance of puberty. If i did anything physical, or was active in any way, i could easily eat many meals in a day.
    my record to this day stands at 25 meals. And this isn't me cheating mycounting an apple or four grains of rice. I'm talking full english breakfasts of bacon, hash browns, beans, sausage and many other things. i had five of them. Next came lunch which consisted of wraps, burgers, sandwiches - subs, chips - french fries, and other items associated with the meal. i had 12. lastly we came to dinner which was again another large affair. i'm talking about chicken breast, fish fingers -- fish sticks, pizza and spaghetti of many styles. i had 8.
    The camp cook - as i was working in a summer camp at the time - thought i was wasting or throwing away the food. they had me stand to the side of the line and eat the meal before going back in again for more. they watched me eat an entire meal in the time it took them to dish out somewhere in the region of 11 people. i don't know the exact number but it was small. when i came back up for more they realised i wasn't lying and gave me larger portions to try and help. it did, but i still went for thirds and fourths most meal times.
    today, it has slowed down but i am still a person that can become full, though it rarely lasts long. The change means that i now find more filling meals or food stuffs that help keep me satiated before going back in for more.
    hope you found this entertaining to read.
    JC

    I saw a mini doc on a guy with a similar condition (I think in iowa?) where he had two genetic conditions, one that prevented his body from creating the chemical that controls our sense of hunger, so no matter how much he ate he always felt like he had been starving for weeks, and the second one made it so that he could never put on any weight and couldnt absorb almost any nutrients from food, so he literally ate everything (like 6 loaves of bread in an hour) and couldnt get anything out of it at all.

    I got a nutrition minor in college and I’m extremely curious what could’ve been going on with this man’s physiology. It seems like he must’ve had major issues with digestion and absorption of nutrients if he could pass things mostly intact without *much* issue 😳 it would also explain to a degree why he would be so hungry despite eating so much, the actual nutrients weren’t getting into his cells. I’m sure it was more complex than that but he clearly had issues with actually putting his food to use. Poor guy, it sounds like he must’ve had a really uncomfortable and pretty miserable life.

  • @StickySauce101

    Tarrare's mind was definitely broken, likely because of the mess that was his internal body - often they go hand in hand.. it has taken us up until 21st century to even begin to see how they are connected so he never stood a chance in 1700s, likely he became so crazed due to a combination of his physicall illness, his life-time of being ridiculed and abuse plus growing mental problems.. all of which resulted in a "perfect storm" scenario to create one of history's most demented characters.

    The critical factor nobody goes into is that Tarrare didn't gain weight. He got almost no nutrition from the calories he consumed, even the edible ones. He also had chronic diarrhea & flatulence. Could he have been missing a large portion of his intestines? He had insatiable hunger because his body couldn't metabolize properly. A real autopsy would have revealed this. Whole thing sounds like an urban legend, doesn't it?

    I never got to that level, but I was a skinny guy. Needed a medical waiver just to join the army for being 1 pound underweight. On my first deployment I'd get an extra meal. I was supervised as I ate. I enjoyed the extra food, but barely put on any weight. My 1SG gave up. I could eat whenever I wanted, but they gave up on trying to put weight on me. I think I maxed at 165lbs at a height of 6'

    Tarrare may be the king of eating. But when it comes to drinking all bow to the late André René Rousimoff better known as Andre The Giant. His drinking was legendary in wrestling locker rooms. Ric Flair saying Andre down 116 beers in a single sitting or Mean Gene Okerlund saying Andre would start the day with an entire case of wine. Makes you wonder how his liver didn't give him hell.

    I'm no doctor, but I did like the theory that the cause of his unnatural hunger was severe stomach ulcers. Perhaps eating such massive quantities of food helped put pressure against them and made them less painful, but the constant eating kept them pretty much non stop agitated so they'd never heal and the constant abuse of his stomach to alleviate that pain/"hunger" caused his digestive tract to stretch out over time. It might even explain the odor and the "outhouse flooding dumps" if at almost all times he had a raging sore oozing in to his stomach and intestines. But again, I'm not a doctor. I just remember hearing that theory and thinking "Huh, maybe?"

    The trick to eating competitions is apparently drinking HUGE amounts of water in the coming weeks to the event, larger amounts everytime so the persons stomach is essentially trained to stretch more and more so it can at the big day hold a huge amount of food. Another trick is chewing on frozen tootsie rolls to condition and strengthen the muscles in the jaw

  • @Saffron-sugar

    Medical perspective.
    A weird unfortunate combination are things?
    Prader-Willi syndrome gives people insatiable hunger (aka hyperphagia).
    I assume he had that.
    -many people with bulimia, when they binge, and Prader Willi syndrome have ruptures of oesophagus and stomach due to over staffing. This did not happen to him.
    So, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome could explain the extreme stretchiness of his skin, and the syndrome is believed by many to be closely tied with autism.
    If Tarrare separate from Prader Willi, Ehlers-Danlos and mild autism, that would explain a great deal of it.
    Trimethylaminuria is a malabsorption issue that can cause someone to have a terrible smell and this could’ve been coupled with other malabsorption issues which is why he was nearly undernourished 100lb (46kg) as an adult man even though he ate enough for 15.

    It sounds like a severe case of Prader-Willi Syndrome. A genetic disorder that causes insatiable hunger. It comes with generally lower intelligence/developmental disabilities and a markedly shorter than normal stature, but sufferers are usually obese. And while they have been known to eat non food items i have not heard of anything as extreme as this.
