2 inch strip of 1/2 plywood along bottom of walls. Keeps drywall off the concrete, and if you ever have water incident, your whole basement would have to fill 2 inches deep to reach drywall. Also makes baseboards much easier to put in.
Jeff,
You’re not just a great showman, you’re also a great teacher and confidence builder.
You’re like the Tony Robbins of DIY. 😄👍
Thanks again Jeff! You help us all so much and it's truly appreciated.
Also, if u don’t own a panel lifter, u can use drywall scraps as spacers. Remove them once the board is screwed to the studs 🤓💪🏽👊🏽😈
Yep that what I did and you know you have a half inch exactly. Perfect everytime
Awesome job educating DIY's on proper way to do many . remodeling projects. Hats off to you. 👍
Ha ha, keeping it simple! I use my flat bar to lift my sheet rock away from the floor. Works so nicely
I always save a few left over drywall to make small repairs due to my young boys playing around. I really enjoy your videos and how to’s. I have already finished one bathroom and now working on the second. Thanks for your videos and instructions. Cheers.
Many thanks Jeff! Great tips!
I recently bought a lifter.
I always used off-cuts before but it is a great little tool.
Also it is extremely helpful for rehanging a heavy wooden or metal door on it's 3 or 4 hinges.
Thanks again for the video and have a great Saturday night!
I picked up a used lifer that was in brand new condition for $75, guy just wanted it out of his garage. Best purchase ever! I used it for support while cutting out rafters to raise my ceilings, now putting it to work installing new sheetrock. That lift is a lifesaver!
Great video Jeff. Thanks for sharing.
That transition at 5:35 was clean!! Shout out to the editor lol. Awesome tips all around. Wish I saw this before I did my drywall job. Will keep these tips in mind for future builds for sure! Thanks!
It's nice to see all the ways I'll screw up before I do it. Kind of like a spoiler for my project.
Jeff, you're awesome! I have to redo the drywall in my basement due to black mold and your videos help me out big time!
What timing! As this was released I was watching your drywall a to z series!
Cheers!
Thank you so much for all all the wealth of information!!!
Great video Jeff. Thanks.
I just want to take a second to thank you, Jeff. I'm currently in the middle of a bedroom renovation and I've got to say you have been a huge help. Changing the wood paneling this house (1969) was built in with drywall, adding insulation (ski cabin originally so we have none I guess), and doing electrical work has been really fun so far! Satisfied customer here!
Fantastic!
Which one of your videos di I watch to fill gaps in drywall seams?...thank you very appreciate your advice
Jeff, thank you for all these amazing videos! My husband and I are first time homeowners attempting to fix our flooded basement. All water is out and we are demoing about 2 feet from the floor because all that drywall and insulation was soaked and a bit moldy. Can you do a video on flood cuts or doing drywall for that section of flood cut? (2-4 feet from floor?). That would be so helpful!
I was one of the first subscriber of Jeff. Now he has 2.3 million of subscribers. I’m really happy for you Jeff.
Thanks, great video! Would be great if you can show how to fix a textures ceiling and how you would go about paint matching.
Thanks 👍
Wonderful sharing my friend!
Way to go Patrice, that looks great!
Good info
Ok. I have installed my drywall and patched the seams and screw points. Now I need to texture. Do I skim coat the wall, let it dry, sand and then texture? ??? Or texture over the drywall without skim coating? I tried to find a a video by you on skim coating. I found the one on texture and it was great. Your technique works on my walls as they have big texture areas not the tiny dots.
I love your content. I am a UA-cam University student who has learned so much from content creators like you. Thank you for all you do… And keep up the good work.
Thank You.
Gracias
I always save an off cut piece, at least a 2 ft wide one for pieces to patch any holes later down the road so I don't have to buy a whole sheet or any small piece. Just stick it in the attic for later. You'll need it. Someone will (me or a kid) will knock a hole in the wall some day down the road...lol.
Agreed completely, just last week I went into the attic and fished out a piece of scrap drywall to patch a hole.
I agree entirely! But just save ONE good sized piece - don’t save every little tiny piece you don’t need. Hopefully you won’t end up with that many holes
I wish I had seen this video before I puzzled together several rooms in my dyi rehab job! Lucky for me son in law who does dw for a living rehung everything with new full sheets just like you showed. wheeew!
Love this simple and short video
Cheers Gary!
Great points Jeff. I have been guilty of hanging on to pieces of drywall myself.
Where are getting a 4x8 sheet of drywall for $8? Here it is minimum $13 for plain and $18 for mold resistant.
Thank you for the video! You might cover this someplace else but I'm ready to use compound now. In what order do you tape? Horizontal first then butt joints then corners?
You are the Tiger Woods of Home Renovation DIY. Period.
Jeff when hanging top sheet on the wall by yourself, ever first push 3or4 drywall nails into the board were the studs are.push the board up hammer the nails Perfect ever time
Hi Jeff love your videos ! Any idea about slanted ways and a easy way to measure this?
I have been watching and learning from your videos for a while. I plan to be in the contracting business for painting, drywall installation, and more. I'm quite nervous taking my first steps into the field but your videos have helped me in confidence. I just wish you could teach me in person because I'm more of a hands on learner and kinda slow and you seem like you'd have the patience for that. Anyway, love your videos.
You got this.
I’m in the same boat. Would love to learn such valuable skills so that I too can become a great n honest contractor but like u I’m hands on as well
I am in the process of installing sheetrock on my first floor replacing old plaster board from the 50's that was crumbling. I was able to raise my ceilings to 108" to tall for standard drywall to be hung horizontally, without a third piece, and I wasn't able to source wider sheetrock in my area. I am cutting 10 ft sheets to 108" and installing vertically. So far I have been able to lay it out where I only have butt joints in the corners. I hear that hanging drywall horizontally reduces the tape joint footage. If you wind up having to build up the joint later and stretch it out that seems to defeat the reasoning for doing it that way. Like you said the mud is more expensive. I'm curious to know your thoughts on this. Thanks for your videos I have learned so much from you!
Great videos ,love them. Do you ever wet the drywall tape before you put it in the joint ?
In Australia (I think, but don't quote me) they put the butt joints between the studs with a backer that bends the board slightly to give a void for the tape and mud so you can get a nice smooth finish
holy crap with the jump cuts! Relax!!
1:34 Point me in the direction of the $8 8' sheet of drywall! It's $16 here in Sask
I didn’t understand step #3. I’m going over this
If I’m going to tile my backsplash on textured drywall. Should I skim coat it or sand the texture down? Hoping I can skim coat, sanding texture would be messy. Lmk the way! Thanks boss.
adding drywall, hanging vertical on wall, is it ok for taper to be on top? Ceiling is already done, I am adding over existing wall panel
Have watched everyone of your drywall videos, can't get tape to stick. Have also tried every mud there is
Why does putting the drywall on top of concrete cause mold? I want replace behind the baseboards and seal that gap so no draft (or moisture if a pet has an accident nearby and gets onto the framing wood and seeps underneath it).
We just had a drywall section put up. Huge seam issue. Easily seen from any angle. Contractor isn't replying to our emails to make it right. He barely taped it, then put mud on, then said it was good to go. Ugh. Wish I'd seen this video before he did it.
Jeff when are you doing home visits!? We need you in Lumby BC!!
I love u buddy ❤😊
Totally unrelated question. I have a carpet inlay surrounded by tile. I want to remove the carpet and attempt to match the tile roughly. My concern is that the existing tile will be higher than the tile I install, creating a depression in the floor with a lip. How would I raise the height of the new tile so that it is even? Should I add a layer of subfloor? Self leveling concrete? Any suggestions?
Why do you run the drywall horizontally? Running vertically eliminates most, if not all butt joints. You also don’t have 14.5” of unsupported joints between each stud. If you have a wall taller than 8’ you also eliminate that extra piece of butt joint. Butt joints use much more mud as well than an edge joint.
RIGHT ON PATRICE ( guy from shout out ) !! NICE JOB ON THE BATHROOM !!
Cheers!
You right my man
Save the lifting tool
and use all those scraps of drywall
Great video again. I noticed that the studs are staggered. Sound proofing step? I love those videos too. We have a musician in the family.
we released a sound proofing video a couple weeks ago. Cheers for the catch!
That edit at 5:34 👏👏👏
I have a question what's best to put first the floor or wall
do you recommend paper or fiber tape?
Love the channel! That's definitely not a catch 22 tho...
I hade to replace a whole sheet of dry wall because of damage anyway after I got it up I had a brain fart and didn’t tape the seam, so know it cracked at the seam, any easy way to fix or just scrape out the seam and redo it?
First time drywaller here ….I screwed it to the studs and forgot to apply adhesive to the studs. Is it really necessary to use the adhesive? Am in Australia and it seems the manufacturers recommend that.
Love your vids, thanks. any chance your website can be fixed? link goes to a dead website. Thanks
Cut the "cuts" way too many cuts on. the video. I don't loose the message when their are less cuts! I have to say however, they are on time, just use a little less cuts! my 2 penny's. I do subscribe and enjoy your skills! It's helped my here at my home a lot! You're are my "go-to" on many issues! Cheers!
I was wondering what kind of bit and extension you use in your impact and drill. Thanks
If you can justify the expense a drywall screwgun is a good investment.
Hey, I'd love to see how you glue a drywall tk the wall(aka without studs) seems like an easier idea in some cases and since there are specific techniques about it, that would be a fun video
What kind of wall would you glue drywall to that doesn't have studs? Please don't say concrete or block.
I wish a sheet of drywall was 8 bucks! Ours is running $14.35 for 8 ft
Max is like I refuse to tell this man to fix his collar lol
I run my tapered joints north on walls. No butt joints to tape. Durabond to ensure its solid.
Wait a sheet of Drywall is $8? where? Please share where you're getting that price
I can definitely use that piece of drywall for drywall patches Ohh man do they come in handy hahaha but all in all for installing drywall on a wall or ceiling I agree go buy new sheets
I'd love to see a video on how to drywall upto a "natural" rock/brick fireplace. Not a lot of videos on how people tackle the situation and previous owners did a messy job caulking all the various sized gaps.
For brick, put a rip strip up against the brick.
This is so true……..
One thing I can add is seams on studs - I’ve done it leavin the seam between studs just use a piece of sheathing as a retro stud. It’s one of those things that you believe when you see it. I did on the ceiling too n 23 years later no cracks either.
There is a product called Buttboard made for that apparently is shaped to ccreate a taper at the butt joint. Haven't actually tried it yet, but planned to.
@@alwaysvacationing5341 hello
Jeff: Contractor, Teacher, Magician bending light
I'm trying to picture the staggered joints. I'll look through your other videos.
Basically instead of that one 4-corner joint Jeff showed in the video, you'll have two T's 3 or 4 feet apart, one right side up, one upside down.
This didn’t help me darn it. I have a 24 x 24 hole with butt joints on all four corners I need to fix. Do you have a video on something like this?
i don't throw away anything. those scraps are for patching holes later
This man is gonna change the world 🌎
If you don't want to use that last tool a scrap piece of 1/2" drywall can act as a shim. Better use than trying to put that scrap on the wall! 😜
2:38 in, thats so freaking smart, That wouldn’t helped me so much.
Wish my builder watched this
I know you have to stagger your drywall, I have a wall that is almost 10 feet long. If I just put the 10 foot drywall on top and the other one the bottom to have only one easy joint. Is that good??
yep, no need to createe a joint if you don't have to.
I'd be really happy if not only home owners but even some drywallers knew how to properly screw a sheet off. People don't understand how long it takes when 90% of the screws need to be fixed.
What are the red bits you have on your drill?
I believe they're just extensions of, or else longer drivers (flat, Philips, square) in their own right, and should be in a few different lengths.
Did you say 5 years of TY videos?! Seems like the wealth of info. exceeds 5 years!
HOW CAN I FIX A HOLE NEXT TO A STUD
On mistake #1 I’d agree however; I’m new to drywall & will be working alone on my home project. And those large sheets are cumbersome. Any ideas?
Call a friend!
@@TobiasRaphael1 laughs don’t have any. Let me explain. I don’t have any that are interested in doing this kind of work. SMH great suggestion
dang....i want some of that $8 sheetrock! Stuffs $20 a sheet in my town!
Looks at my stack of sheet rock sections........"I know you are but what am I?!"
Lighting, lighting, lighting the more light the better when doing drywall
theres no reason to cut a sheet unless you're at the end of a wall, all your stud work should be designed around the size of a sheet.. Also staggering the joints prevents cracking, 2 layers of tape isn't going to show up since here in the uk we skim the walls with around 3mm of plaster...
An 8 foot sheet of drywall is not 8 bucks any more...
Just paid 15 for mold resistant....
I keep a leftover piece of drywall for patches.
Great tip!
What's your stance on a drywall screw gun? Is it worth it?
Great DW tips. My issue is finding a drywall lift panel system that is lightweight easy to assemble and fast. If you search UA-cam a guy had a really cool single lift system about 9 to 12 years ago. Please find a better system out there other than that current drywall panel lift system with the pulley wheel hand crank clunky design.
I can say that the panel lift allows one person diy n I never lost a sheet n accurate holes.
Just use your hands you baby
@@Tyler-nj5dr I'm talking whole house fast and you the bady I use technologies and tools for efficiency 🔧💯💯🏁
@@DJ_Driven Frankly, if you can't hang drywall as fast as that machine, you will be replaced by machines.
@@Tyler-nj5dr I hate doing drywall so whatever can make it better I'm all for it.
NEVER THROW DRYWALL SCRAPS IN THE TRASH. Stash them in the stud cavity it adds to soundproofing and as fire retardant.
Nice tip. Of course subcontractors also put soda cans and hamburger wrappers and other junk in those places as well.
Lol used to be $8 a board now $13 in Alabama
this therefore is why drywall boards be so long.
Is a “mud mixing drill” the only tool that can be used to mix drywall mud? Seems like a 1-trick pony. No other drill will work without causing separation?
it can also be used for mixing thinset and concrete. some things just need the right tool for the job.
