Fire arrows are loved by film makers because:
    1) it’s flashy
    2) it provides light to a dark setting so the audience can better see what’s going on.

But if I remember correctly, Toronaga's entourage was carrying torches, so there was already plenty of light. So therefor no need for the fire arrows.
And even if there wasn't any other light source, it would have been easy enough for them to have either filmed the scene during the day and made it look like night in post, something done lots of times. Or, they could have used some lights and just adjsut the cameras that it looks darker than it really does but at the same time still be light enough for the audience to see what's going on. And also consider that just because it's night time it doesn't mean that it's pitch black out, the moon can and does provide a fair amount of light, partiularly a full moon. So a seemingly bright night coudl easily be explained by a full moon in the night sky.

@@Riceball01 They did do that at the end of episode 3 it provides a range of light. You wouldnt want the episode to be only red glow of fire or only blue glow of the moon.

fires at and near your target will actually render their night vision useless, blinding even. which is why even in guadalcanal in ww2, it's still the japanese' favorite tactic. if it wasn't for radar, it would have been far more devastating.

Agree again with most of it. The only slight reminder is that after Mariko failed to lead the women out of Osaka and her fight with the ishido captain, Yabu and another captain commented that she might have beaten a lesser swordsman… so her ability whilst not elite may have been competent… another point you could also make is that not every samurai was elite either… they were not all Musashi.

I thought the scene where Toranaga makes Blackthorne a hatamoto was glossed over. The import and social standing of the position was detailed in the book much better

    • @djstevie69
      @djstevie69 3 місяці тому +22

A 'fair' comment but I think this reflects Blackthorn's position as he really doesn't understand yet, this is also echoed by William Adams who was also made a retainer but mused that he wasn't sure what it meant in his diaries. You can see across the three episodes he is 'starting' to get where the Japanese mind is in this time but he's still an outsider who's learning.

That's also the part I was slightly let down on. Hatboro is a pretty big deal, not just a "well we can't call him a barbarian anymore" thing. Plus, I'm fairly sure it only happened after **SPOILER**
... He saved Toranaga from the earthquake. So now I think maybe we won't get an earthquake scene.

I think the fire arrows were used quite well and FAAAAAR better than in practically any other series or movie I've seen). First of all, they start with unlit arrows, so they don't throw away the element of surprise and only shoot fire arrows once the surprise is gone anyway. And if you look at it, they don't shoot the fire arrows at the people, but at trees above them and the surroundings.
To me it looks like the fire arrows are to illuminate the area, where their targets are, to better see them and at the same time, this also worsens their opponents' dark vision. If you stand in the dark, your eyes adjust to the darkness, but if you stand in the light, they don't.
I would also assume that they'd deliberately avoid the palakins, since the "women" might make for much better hostages than corpses. Though that they aren't concentrating more fire at Blackthorn is a bit odd. He is after all supposedly the main taget and they want him dead, not captured. And he's also standing out quite a bit, even in bad light.

In the book, and the '80s series, Toranaga did switch placeswith Lady Kiri. Think about it- if he was in the litter the whole time, how would Blackthorne have known? He saw the switch while everyone else was looking at the pregnant girl who tripped on the steps (the ruse constructed by Toranaga so he could make the switch). I', a certified nerd who has read the book 3 times, and seen the '80s series several times. 🤓😆

    • @Matixmer

Yes, but it makes absolutely zero sense in this adaptation because the way the guards were standing at least half a dozen would have still seen the swap because the palanquin was between them and Lady Kiri.

The "nitpicks" are the reason I watch content from someone who is not only an expert in the subject matter, but one that is passionate about their personal field of knowledge and who can explain it to me in a way that I can comprehend.
I enjoy learning about the little details that I would not pick up on because of my lack of knowledge in that area. These "nitpicks" allow me to build a better foundation of information and a wider world view on the subject matter.
I already know I enjoy the show, I do not feel compelled to spend my time having my own opinion repeated back to me as a form of entertainment, echo chamber for lack of better word.
I enjoy the episode recaps, but I hope there will be a longer series repap from a historical viewpoint at the end of the series.

His nitpicks are valid from an academic standpoint, as trivia maybe, but the show is better because of these nitpicks. Adaptations fall apart when they try too hard to be "faithful" to the source material. Your aim is to make the best show on the screen, not be as faithful as possible, so changes that get you the best scene on the screen are right. Every excellent adaptation had that in common. The idea that the more faithful the adaptation is the better is absolutely false.

And I doubt Buntaro is dead even tho he didnt swim out like the book from what i remember. We need the arrow into the post scene! Buntaro survives because :
      1)We didn't see him die on-screen,
2)We can clearly see him in the battle sequence in the trailer, identiyiable his helmet with the double Cresent behind Toronaga. And also minor close-up shots we haven't seen yet.

    • @1521Palm

I believe this whole thing in making it seem like Buntaro died, is a way to let Mariko get romantic with Blackthorn while keeping her hands clean, thinking her husband is dead. Which would be an unnecessary change to the source material. But perhaps this change is needed to please the "modern audience".

I like the part where the Black ship crushed throught the blockade of boats whereas the smaller Japanese ship would have been boarded. While there are bigger Japanese ships, it showed the technological difference between a country that has territory around the world vs. a country that is mostly isolated. I don't think Japanese ships could make a trip across the Pacific, they don't look like they even have the tools to navigate the ocean.

I have not seen the original show, or read the book. So I am going into this series only with my limited knowledge of historical events.
I was left rolling my eyes a little bit at some of your complaints about the previous episodes, mostly because you were comparing things to the source material, whether or not they actually made sense. Mariko being cold to John after she had to listen to all those negative things about the catholics, makes a lot of sense. Her faith was being challenged by this stranger to her land and way of life. Telling people of faith that they are wrong and have been manipulated tends not to go well. Regardless of how she was in previous portrayals, this makes complete sense given her situation.
But I agree in that I am happy that now they have had more chances to talk and understand each other. Giving her reason to warm up to him.
Toranaga being in the middle of the fight makes sense when you consider he was in the carrier when they were ambushed. It was hit with several flaming arrows, so he kinda had to get out. It seems unlikely that he would flee and give orders as if it was a proper army VS army on an open field situation.
The only real issue I've had is with a lot of the armour. It's basically an approximation of Samurai armour. Lacing in weird places, lames of weird shapes, and decorative bits in completely the wrong areas. But this is something that only a few people would really notice. I know some people who are letting these details ruin the entire experience for them.
Overall I am loving this series. The characters are compelling and fun. I definitely feel like we are going to get more bonding moments between Blackthorn and Toranaga, given the swimming scene at the end of the episode. I can't wait to see what comes next.

There was something nagging at me about Mariko in this version and after watching the 3rd episode I think I figured out what it is. It’s nothing major but what it is, is her English…it is without any Japanese accent. In the 1980 version the actress Yoko Shimada (RIP) in my opinion sounded exactly as I recall speaking English to the many Japanese I encountered in my career and trips to Japan, good English but with a distinctive Japanese accent. I think the difference is that this Mariko (Anna Sawai) was born and spent her first years in New Zealand.

I know some people don't think women can do anything but this wasn't unrealistic. Women in Japan were trained to fight. There's also a reason the spear/pole arm was much more common on the battlefield than the katana.
A woman trained to use a spear will often win against a man with a sword. Much like a bow will beat a spear or katana from a distance.
      It's not always about strength.

Ive read the book 5 times. It is my favorite. The opening scene with Yabu is much better in the book. So are the scenes with Buntaro. I didnt like Naga arguing with Ishido in stead of him. I liked the change you mentioned, with Blackthorne saving Toranaga's disguise. I love seeing the council interactions that the book only mentions. A lot of the acting is good, and the cinematography os great. I refuse to dislike the show, but the book is twice as good imo

I enjoy it, but I think that the fact they need to compress everything on 8 episodes makes that some scenes feel a little bit rushed. Especially the way on which Blackthorne gains the confidence of Toranaga. Saying that, they had made a great work so far, given the time constraints

I didn't like the blatant cut from them escaping the forrest to just being at the docks...just a semi poorly directed/written episode. I really enjoyed the scene when Buntaro stayed on the dock, and Toranaga yells out his name. It was a powerful moment that I would love to know if something like that ever happened IRL. From my understand a Lord wouldn't yell out his Samuri's name as encouragement or respect.
It was still a powerful TV moment and humanized both Buntaro and Toranaga. Much more for Buntaro than the original show did. In that show he was utterly evil and distasteful. Sorry i read the book decades ago and cant remember it.

5:40 i disagree w this gripe. not only do they look cool which is probably the main reason, but just basing it off of what I know about history, the arrows were probably used to set things on fire like you said but also so they could see their enemies. In a night setting nobody truly has the advantage during an ambush when the target is that large, and a lit up battlefield helps show where everyone is.

I at first had thought it was "for no reason", but actually the reason is obvious, it's because I watched your videos about the series. I ended starting the watching and by episode 2 had decided that I'll watch until the end.
Don't know about the story, is good enough for me, but the production values are seriously impressive!
    The costumes are amazing!
EDIT: about lacking interaction between Torunaga and Anjin, I think it makes more sense, feels "credible" to me. I would find it hard to see someone of the status of Torunaga to be "bonding" with the so called Anjin immediately, specially when Torunaga has so many problems to deal with. Other characters accuse him of giving too much attention to this foreigner exactly for this reason, but it's all for his plans, the Anjin is just a tool that he is trying to find use to help escape he situation he is in. It's only after Torunaga witness the Anjin acting on his own a few times and showing his personal valor that he starts to act different and more personal with him.

  • @lembitmoislane.
    @lembitmoislane. 3 місяці тому +1

Here's my thoughts: It's a flawed but good episode.
My primary issues with this was of course the use of the flaming arrows. In a show that prides itself in being authentic, it feels like a bad move. On the other hand, I will praise them for actually making armour work. When I listened to the podcast, the action director directly stated that they would not accept any wounds or deaths via going through the armour like normal western media. They even had a chant against it if they caught it being done on set. Another issue I have is the dock scene, as it felt out of place for all of the people to stop for the warrior's farewell when they were trying to kill the English man. They should had found a more natural way instead. Additionally to my understanding most people see this death as some fakeout, and that he will likely return. Again they should not use cliches as it undermines death. If he's to live, physically show him being captured. This is meant to be a mature and serious show, not another generic disney star wars fake out.
To come to the defense to them on some points; It made sense for Blackthorne to race the black ship because if he just tailed along (as some have suggested), he would be boarded and killed. And keep in mind that the Portuguese Captain does all he can short of firing his cannons to keep that man in the harbour. Also I don't take offence to the Toda Mariko knowing how to fight because some Samuari women were trained for self-defense and this was no doubt a justifiable case. I'll be annoyed if she just regularly fights like a normal Samuari because it was still rare for there to be frontline female fighters and to my understanding her character wasn't like that in the books. Also the downplaying of Blackthorne reaction to the male companion was likely a behind the scenes thing. The studio would likely react hashly if their hero character for their highest ever budget show broke modern norms. Additionally as this was filmed in Canada, I imagine the laws on social matters in Canada would warrant a response against the studio.
So this was an good episode, not prefect, but still high quality and worthly of being a great show.
(And if anyone is wondering how I, someone from aboard knows all about this. It's because I'm have legally seen the show via reaction videos, reading the wikia, and following the official podcast)

Great review, although I did not like this episode at all! They've made several changes that could decrement the story in a worry some way. The Buntaro story line got messed up, the importance on how he give anjin the hatamoto status, the discussion with Fujiko, how Rodriguez saves Anjin from getting captive in the Portuguese vessel (it was not the Black Ship in the book), how Rodriguez gives Anjin a weapon, the importance of swimming for Toranaga, the blockade boats from Ishido, not from the christian damyo, etc. I was also annoyed that they let a great moment of tension slip through their fingers by making a guard to be the last check point instead of Ishido. I was super excited with the first two episodes, but the third one, oh my, this could be the start of a catastrophic u turn.

The one issue I have had so far, and especially with this episode, is how Blackthorn is portrayed as being more passive. This is not a negative for me, and I hope he will become more proactive in the series. But so far he has just been just reacting to events. While in the book he lept in and took charge where he could. It was a battle of wits between him and Toranaga. In the chase, he used guns, but loosing them is fine. What I think hurt his character a bit was how he just reacted to being driving towards the rocks. In the book he deliberately changes course to run towards the Black Ship, forcing the issue. And Rodrigues is the one who relents. This has been happening all along,. Like when the assassin attacks, he overpowers him in the book instead of staring in disbelief. Or how it was his idea to draw the map. Again, not a major issue. But I will be a little disappointed if he never steps-up by the end of the series.

I think that the changes in Mariko's demeanor are because Sanada-san is trying for more authenticity than Clavell portrayed not just in the clothing, food and architecture, etc. but also in the culture of the time. They are trying to give us a feel of Japan at that time, and the Samurai of the Sengoku Jidai period were of necessity a hard and brutal people.

90 pound Mariko is one bad ass naginata wielding badass. 😆 I read the book back in the day and watched the OG Shogun as well and I was confused at times during this episode. What exactly was the boat race all about? How exactly did Ishido expect the ring of tiny boats to block the large Portuguese ship? I will continue watching but I wonder if the general audience interests is fading.

    • @kawadashogo8258
      @kawadashogo8258 3 місяці тому

The fishing boats weren't Ishido's, they were Kiyama's. Ishido even reprimanded Kiyama for engaging in military actions in and around his city. But neither Kiyama nor Ishido expected the little boats to stop the Portuguese ship; they expected them to stop Toranaga's smaller ship (most likely only long enough to take Anjin prisoner in exchange for safe passage for Toranaga, as it was Ishido who wanted to stop Toranaga from leaving, whereas Kiyama only wanted Anjin). Anjin then, against everyone's (including Toranaga's) expectations, manipulated the situation so that the Portuguese ship would break the blockade for him as he commanded Toranaga's ship and he would then coast on through. Toranaga hitching a ride on the Portuguese ship wasn't counted on by Kiyama or Ishido.

I also feel like they are rushing trough some important parts. I understand that, since they have a budget and limited episodes to tell the story. For example i really loved the Buntaro scene from the book, where he was preparing to commit sepuku, instead of fighting his enemies, because he might get captured in the proccess. The way Blackthorn was refusing to understand that, how it is possible for the Japanese people to just accept it and even getting very angry at them. Also the Hashimoto status, like you said in the video, and many more things that portrait the HUGE difference between their cultures. All those things would bring contrast so we can really feel the leaps Blackthorns' character is making in the future by embracing the Japanese culture.

My only issue with some reviews is the nitpick on what actually happened in history when the entire thing is a work of fiction. There are not too many historical fiction works that are not based on real events, but they are not biopics. Yes I'm aware biopics contain fictitious events and dialogue, but they deserve more nitpicks and corrections based on how they are originated.

I really liked this episode. The fire arrows thing I did think was a negative, though. Yes, I get that it's to make the fight more visible for the audience, but couldn't that have been done more naturally by having the fight take place under the light of a full moon or something? Like you said, the use of fire arrows exposes the exact position of the attackers. Also, there's no reason why they would have been trying to set the palanquins on fire, as they didn't yet know that Lord Toranaga was being smuggled out in one of them. If anything, due to believing that the Lady Kiri was in one of them, they would have wanted to avoid damaging the palanquins at all, because killing a member of the heir's family would have been a serious crime. So yes, I think that scene was very poorly thought out, and the fight could have been realistically made visible for the audience in more intelligent ways. But that's my only real gripe with the episode. On the whole I really loved it. And I agree about Mariko warming up and Sawai Anna coming to better embody the character, I think she's turning out really well. The interaction between Anjin and Rodriguez was good too, although sadly I don't think this Rodriguez will ever really outshine the Rodriguez of the original series, who had such great charisma. As for the interactions between Anjin and Lord Toranaga, I think that now that they're out of the dangerous situation they were in in Osaka, there will be more time to flesh out their relationship. Oh, one last comment, I loved Toda Hiromatsu in that scene where he handed in Lord Toranaga's resignation and was quietly gloating to the Council. That was glorious.

I did have a big expectation after seeing all the 10/10 review's... Till now, I give it a 7/10 max! They're still doing the dark rainy moody atmosphere, I understand it from cinematic point of view, but they stretch it too much for my taste, in the rising sun country it's kind of a miss. About missing opportunity, I was disappointed that they didn't use "classic" music or instruments for the score, it sounds too much modern for my taste too. There is so much richness in that cultural period, that was a miss.
I agree too, they rush too much the story forwards, I noticed that since ep 1, what's bad about that is that we didn't have time to care or be attached to the characters.. There's a big lack of intimacy with the main characters. In the 80's tv show, Mariko sama and Fujiko sama were two loved characters, we care about them and all, but now I still don't have any strong feeling towards those characters after 3 episodes. Like the fact that Toranaga named Anjin ( his not even Anjin san!) Hatamoto on the fly! And was not even a samurai yet, his now Hatamoto. The lack of explanation or to make us viewer's to very well understand the manner's or the way things work in Japan from Blackthorn point of view, didn't help us to understand or care for his behaviours or the choices he makes, him as most of the main characters also. The fact that he's quickly very close with Toranaga is kind of annoying, because we didn't have to see Blackthorn ascension to him, as it was showed in the 80's adap which was more elaborated, I find it disappointing. Which also didn't help to see or understand the big deal concerning the main plot... At this point, Shogun 2024, it's more the missing in his story telling the issue than the costumes, that are beautiful as the sets they build that are very good. I still have the intention to watch all the episodes, let's hope things will be "corrected" as the character's "issues" and the plot getting some reinforcement! :)

    >Blackthorne has his back turned while fighting one of the attackers and is about to get stabbed
    >sound of a blade slicing through flesh or seeing it tear through the attacker's neck
    >attacker falls and reveals Mariko as the one who killed him
    >that's her first and only kill so far (that we see)
It would let her save Blackthorne's life and further establish a connection between while making clear she isn't the type to just recklessly charge into the fray and go head-to-head with armed men.

I disagree. That would be way too cliche. I like that Blackthorne is kinda just standing around not knowing exactly what to do. He is an experienced pilot, but not a melee warrior.

So far so good my only nit pick is that I wish mariko English wasn’t so good like she sounds American I want to hear more of a Japanese accent

The actress is a bilingual New Zealander.
I do not think lack of an accent is too big of a problem since she should be speaking Portuguese anyway, which I think is easier for Japanese to pronounce than English.

There is a reason modern day soldiers use tracer fire at night.
