That’s why Tokugawa Ieyasu is the most effective Machiavellian shogun in Japanese history. He gave zero chance for anyone to seek their revenge against him (something that even Nobunaga himself failed to do so).
    - He killed his own wife then proceeded to kill his own son to prevent the son from avenging his mother.
    - He picked a fight with an extremely unlikable guy like Ishida Mitsunari (making him a lesser of two evils in an instant) and won which means nobody is gonna avenge Mitsunari.
    - He poisoned Kato Kiyomasa in a way that was subtle enough for people at that time not to notice it as poisoning.
    - He wiped out the whole Toyotomi clan out of existence, including Hideyori’s 8 year old son.
    - He gave Sanada Nobuyuki enough rewards that made him not trying to seek revenge on Ieyasu for killing his brother Yukimura.
A true evil genius. A Tywin Lannister with zero flaws in his plans.

Agreed and agreed to all accounts. Except he was god damn lucky as well. Sometimes I feel like he had the devil's luck on his side.

@@rockgamiasedes677 I think Yoritomo has more of an element of “luck” than Ieyasu. There are so many circumstances that he’s not supposed to win and yet he won anyway (like when he’s found in a mountain but somehow his life got spared or Taira somehow retreated because the birds were flying too loud). Ieyasu’s luck came from him surrounding himself with great warriors like Hattori Hanzo and Honda Tadakatsu but other than that, it’s about his ingenuity.

It was a Taira family matriarch of the whole family who, many thought to have said. The young Yoritomo reminded her of her youngest son who was killed, still heartstruck from that ordeal if anything from that situation he was lucky but not really luck, it was due to someone having misplaced feelings, but he didn't seek revenge at all if anything the Taria caused all of it to happen unto themselves they were their own bad luck lol. @@nont18411

Whelp, Lord Kanetada was the one who slipped the information over to his retainer Sado in the first place. This also goes to show that having an advancing age in a position of power can catch you off guard sometimes.

There’s another story you maybe have heard of is Kazumas revenge. It’s a bit of a longer story than this, but in that story he seeks to avenge his father as well for what I feel is an even more sympathetic reason. Along with his brother in law Araki Mateyemon.

By the time of the early Shogunates, revenge was not just a "desire" but a social obligation. There's stories all over Japanese history of people waiting years, or decades, to complete an act of revenge. By the time of Lord Asano and the 47 Ronin, they disbanded for two years, living as drunks and vagabonds for two years, before gathering to plan the raid on Kira's mansion. This didn't detract from their honor, as they considered themselves dead the moment Lord Asano lost his head.
Kira's head was placed on Asano's grave, completing the obligatory vengeance.

    • @rudymeow
      @rudymeow 9 днів тому

To add more, they waited two years hoping their clan might be pardoned and restore of status, when all hope lost they visit everyone whom signed so they can change their mind and leave(which most did), then go for the revenge.
In aftermath one major reason of ordering seppuku was "if they were pardoned, and one of them done something dishonorable later, would stain such an honorable act."
After that the descendants of the 47 were sought after by the lords, and almost none the those didn't revenge get any career under the lords.

I really enjoyed this story being shared.
I don't look at it so much as a moral imparting story but more so as a way that the lord outwitted his son to protect an 'honorable' samurai who killed a man in his sleep to seek revenge.

My issue with that story and the Soga Brothers is that for the life of one man, he wiped the entire party.
Even though it cost him his life, he not only got the Lord, but the remaining 47 loyal Ronin. 48-1 is an astronomical K/D ratio.

The twist would be if the instigator "Lord Kanetada" pointed to another Samuari shortly after Sado kil!ed the Original Samuari and said, "See that guy, he's the one that killed your father".

I've read stories of samurai from my youth the same as I read about knights from Charlemagne to Arthur, the Greeks and Romans all regarding honorable actions. At first, I thought about Sado's actions as dishonorable, the adult in me understood the situation, a mediocre warrior would likely of died in a duel, and thus the justice he sought would never be reached. It's a conflicting thing to consider, but I understand his actions, and perhaps his name is lost to history as a result of his killing a sleeping man, at his most vulnerable. He did get his justice, and maybe that's the point to his story. What son that loved their father wouldn't seek vengeance by whatever means necessary to reach their goal?

Confucianism in the Book of Rites also encourages avenging the death of one's father. 「寢苫枕干,不仕,弗與共天下也;遇諸市朝,不反兵而鬥。」"Sleep on straw with a shield for a pillow. Be determined not to live under the same heaven (as your father's murderer). If you meet him in the marketplace, do not go back for a weapon, but fight immediately."
But it also explains various conditions on when it was NOT appropriate, mainly having to do with where you encountered the murderer, and how close a kinship one had to the slain (if it wasn't your father), and whether or not one had responsibilities that would be compromised by taking up the act of revenge (eg: being a public official).
While not exactly expressed in samurai philosophy, it still does have some bearing and application. Confucianism did have some influence on samurai thought, though more so in the Edo period than before.

This is very different from most tales of revenge in Japan, that I am personally aware of. As you are such a skilled storyteller, I enjoyed the tale greatly .But I am torn between my preconceptions of how this would be dealt with, and how it was handled in reality. I had never heard about this event prior to this video. As always you fill in the colours that exist and existed in Japan where many situations were portrayed as black or white terms only. A nicely done episode.

Yeah, that was a NO GO....A REAL WARRIOR DOESN'T END ANOTHER WARRIOR IN such An ignoble way... and Sado should have commited sepaku for coming at a Warrior of that magnitude... like akin to a dirty sneaky cowardly little snake...
    Shameful it is indeed.
That's my take on it as a Warrior in my own right and a avid Listener and student of the Samurai and the Honorable Code held beloved of this Astute and Honorable Warrior Class.
    Shame on you Sado....
Vengeance for your father is of no excuse to ever end a true Warriors life in such an indignant way...
Not remarking on the nature of this kind of kill means its true that Samurai have gone SUPER SOFT. and now Im harder than most Samurai even back then.
    Fascinating...
Btw, did anyone notice how Sado returning he was full of SHAME? He was in violation of the Code and he knew it..and without hesitation should have honored the Code and commit Sepaku...Sado riddled with SHAME and running back to Warriors for their sympathy in regards to his ignoble undertakings was a shame in and of itself.
Sepaku is a ritual just for the having and entertaining the dejected feelings of SHAME.
    FEEL SHAME=SEPPAKU...no exceptions.
Now the WHOLE CLAN got to go for showing sympathy to Sado...and Im going to pretend like I didn't hear of an Entire Group of Warriors fall so low as to CRY for Sado....or ANYONE at all for that part.. that's simply not what Warrior Class Samurai do...They do not cry in front of anyone if they even ever do at all...these guys were a bunch of softies.
Yet Instead they held Sado in high regard and feared him....
UNBELIEVABLE...aint no way in the world any real Samurai would have even went there regarding Sado that reverently..
...They should have atleast BANISHED SADO FROM THE PROVINCE ENTIRELY.

It is an unreasonable argument to claim that by taking revenge no relax will come afterwards.
On the contrary, by taking revenge you can bring the respect, security, peace and relax back to the Country. Of course you can't make the time back to prevent disasters but It's not related to ignore the topic conceptually. Even if you don't want to take and do something legally or formally, you can't go past and stop something but you will just show the fear and irresponsibility of yourself.
The Reveng, Furiousness and Brutality are the gifts by God in the human beings existance to protect and defend the Country and People and their rights against the enemies and any threat.
