Jack Dempsey Fish with Other Fish?

  • Jack Dempsey fish tank mates talk. The jack Dempsey Cichlid fish isn’t as aggressive as everyone thinks it is. Aquarium Dempsey fish tank care is pretty easy when compared to a lot of less sturdy fish. People always ask me questions on what tank mates work best. I have previous videos on that as well.
Some more talk on fish tanks:
I don’t know if this is aloud but I need a little bit of help, a couple of weeks ago I noticed my fish had a little mark under its gills and one fin was missing not it was swimming fine and eating so I left it and kept an eye on it and then it’s top lip started to go funny and then I came to feed them tonight and it looks like this it’s swimming and eating fine could any one tell me what might be wrong?
I’d say a severe infection in the mouth. Possibly mouth rot, I had a betta that did this but unfortunately nothing I tried could fix it. Hope you have more success than I did.
I've had this little guy for about 6 months now and I'm getting worried about his black scales and curly fins. He has been getting more black scales as he has been growing. His fins have also been getting more wavy as he's been growing. I've heard of fin rot and I'm worried that might be it. • Top 5 Tank Mates for J...
So, I am about to try something possibly stupid. I saw an ad on kijiji about a betta being rehomed. He currently lives in a Mason jar.
So I said I'd pick him up tomorrow.
I have a 30 gallon (24" tall), planted, with five female guppies and a few fry which he would be welcome to snack on, imo.
In theory, that should be ok, right?
I do have a spare 5 and 10g if I need to separate him.... There's wood and plenty of vegetation (jungle val, java fern and moss) - will I still need a betta leaf hammock?
Filter outlet is diverted, so no huge currents. Or, rather, plenty of spaces with low current. Any pitfalls I need to look out for?

I have blood worms, bug bites and shrimp pellets, will he need any betta specific food?
It’s certainly possible to try him in that tank. I would recommend setting up the 5g now with some of the filter media from the 30g for him to acclimatise in for a week or two first though. That way you also know he won’t pass on anything like ich to your established tank.
Hi there, after some advice please. Was thinking of getting a few small fish (guppies) for a little tank. What Id like to know before rushing in is if it has a small filter etc what is the upkeep exactly? Cleaning requirements etc. Thanks everyone.
Yes, you will need a filter. You'll also want a heater and an air stone and pump.
The smallest you could reasonably go is a ten gallon. You would want to cycle it first (Google "aquarium nitrogen cycle" and come back with any questions you might have), and generally maintenance looks like a 20% water change once a week, which takes maybe twenty minutes.
Water change process looks like siphoning out the water, using an aquarium safe sponge to clean the glass, gently swishing any dirty filter media in your removed bucket of tank water, and then matching new clean water temperature to the tank temperature and dosing this new water with a dechlorinator (the company seachem makes a product called Prime which is excellent).
Guppies aren't exactly "small tank fish". In any case, especially if you are putting them into a relatively small tank. Get males only. Don't accept freebie females. Or you'll have freebie fry to give away in no time. (Just woke up to 40 baby fish this morning). I had the silly idea of a Females only tank, but, they can have several pregnancies still even if they haven't seen a male in months...

I've had docile Jacks, but never a docile gold saum green terror.

    • @torringames
      @torringames 2 роки тому

My brothers gold saums are very docile unless they are spawning and protecting eggs and fry then they'll bite me or my brother even during water changes.
Tho currently his male blue Gene Jack Dempsey is his biggest fish at 9 inches. Male pink Jack close behind at 8 inches and the biggest gold saum of the 4 is around 7 inches smallest being 4 inches with the females growing much slower. All that being said, 9 inch Jacky is the most aggressive of the whole tank. I would take on his pink Jack with the way Jacky bullies the pink JD if I saw myself keeping it long term but I prefer a Blue Gene or wild type Jack.

IMO they are pretty mild if they have space and as long as they are the dominant fish and possibly the only cichlid. They will not bother other fish.

  • @mitch9946

They arent that aggresive. Just give them hiding spots and your good. If your are planning to keep them with other fish like barbs, discus, and other peaceful fish. But the JD as a juvie, let them grow up together, and they will co exist. That's what I have in my 55 with 6 discus, one JD that is around 6.5 inches now, and a catfish. I do 20 percent water changes 3 times a week and everything is perfect.
