Incredibly versatile player. Going from Country, to Soul, To Jazz and all with just a Telecaster and all the while carving out his own techinque and tone.
This man was insane!!!!One of the Master’s of the Telecaster, and a amazing guitar player in general. I have a strong dislike for Fairfax County Jail RIP Roy Buchanan
I saw Roy live in 1971 in NYC.. my friend and I snuck into the concert hall. We live a couple of blocks away in The village.... I remember he was appearing with a bunch of other bands..crazy horse and a couple other bands .. we had no idea who he was... But when he started playing the Messiah' I can tell you that everybody was literally hypnotized. one of the greatest guitar performances I've ever seen..
If you got time for a movie their us a PBS documentary on Roy Buchanan. And it shows him sitting in with Merle haggard and other people but he shares the story of his life. He actually shared an apartment with Danny Gatton for a little while.
Roy was underrated guitarist he was a genius and one of the best he did not realize himself how he was so. Good and love his voice he influenced me so much to play music I will miss him RIP Roy we love you
I really loved his style of playing. Very sad to hear how he passed away; he deserved much more, but then, his unassuming ways no doubt contributed to the style I liked in his playing.
@@RamonesFan201 must be crack you're smoking because you're the only person I seen say that. I'd like to see you write a better song because he was a solid songwriter. Way better songwriter than Roy
Check out his live show in Austin, Texas. It’s the best live performance I’ve ever seen. As for albums check out his first one (the one with „Messiah will come again” on it), and his 1978 space rock album „You’re Not Alone”
@@firesweep58 Yeah. He was "interacting" with something that was sitting on what the amp was sitting on.....if that makes any sense.😉 I noticed it too and at first i thought he was turning himself or Roy down or up. After a closer look I thought maybe he was getting a new pick because maybe he dropped one.... The ashtray thing makes sense too, though
@@theherbpuffer Yeah I like Roy Buchanan better! The tone and style Make that Tele talk with emotion unreal. Your welcome to your guitar favorite but Buchanan is most definitely mine!! That Bakersfield sound Roy was a big part of. And then his Solo career the man didn't even hit his prime either!! Died to soon.
Even Rory Gallagher never joined the Stones. They deserved to be lead guitarists and were too good even for playing with Keith. Im not utting down any of the Stones in any way, no doubt they are the most popular bles based band the worlds ever seen, Zeppelin were more rock based. Roy could shine playing any style as he felt what he was playing at the time deeply in his soul. There were great players like John Ma Claughlin who connected with other styles like indian classical music with tabla, violin, sitar for example with the Mahavishnu Orchestre and Shakti who was brilliant. John also played Jazz and blues but is different to Roy as is Jeff Beck but its like comparing Picasso with Michelangelo or Turner. Isnt it great seeing all the different colours and hearing all the different sounds. The great thing about these artists is that often they are pushing boundaries in their art looking for something new, unique, maybe spiritual in their sound just like Ginger Baker going to Nigeria to play with those great african drummers.
Is it me or was roy and the other guitar player battling it out lol around like 18 mins where the duel ends. I feel like they were just trying to one up each other the whole time. I think roy wasn't really trying either bc he was just looking at him funny through the whole solo duet thing.
I always thought the way roy moves his jaw around when playing he was doing cocaine but watching him play at his mom and dads house 12:41 i think now its just a tell/habit he had. Shirley he wasn't doing coke around them.
Great documentary (thank you for uploading) EXCEPT whoever decided to leave in that kid playing 1 minute of guitar and 9 minutes of crap ought to be ashamed of themself.
That kid is nils lofgren (springsteen, neil young, ringo starr) he said he was really nervous when he sat in with roy because he was a hero of his and that to this day he’s embarrassed
As well he should be. Not to pile on him, but why on earth would someone leave that in this doc? Could have been another 9 minutes of Roy playing instead.
@@amptron1776 did you not watch this and hear what the guy said about nils and roy before they started? There’s your reason why its in there, it has some significance and according to nils own words in the documentary about roy nils was personally invited to new york by roy for this performance. Direct quote from nils: “I was so nervous in Roy's presence, that once I started soloing, I never stopped, traded licks, or engaged Roy in a guitar duet of weaving lines. Certainly something I wish I had done but I was just too inexperienced and overwhelmed. At one point, with perhaps a disappointed but understanding grin, Roy started detuning a low string, creating a sound effect to cut through my guitar yammering! Oh well, maybe I'll get another go at it in Heaven someday. A giant thanks Roy, for sharing your stage, your gifts, and being my friend. Priceless"
you're on point. either him or the band didn't know where the turnaround was on the chord progression. great licks, but they fall flat if the band's not where it should be. or Roy.
nils was young and still just developing . evidence of this is in his solo's. a lot of it isn't playing licks but just running scales up and down the fret board
Blessed master.
GOD BLESSed ROY BUCHANAN !
The power of music... It has the power to heal I swear... And Roy was the good Doctor .

Don't get me started about Fairfax County. Let's just say I was wrongfully charged
Its sounds like hell on earth.
Johnny Depp doesn't think so.. but anyways I live other side of VA near tech past Roanoke. I think he never remembered
Sone people don't get his guitar playing tho
His guitar playing makes me smile and this documentary was inspirational
The Missiah sens shivers thru my spine. Seen this man live twice and theres none out there that could top his show

That looks like Shuggie Otis playing with the band around 24:00.
Yes it is!! Johnny Otis, the band leader, was his daddy!

that's a coke jaw, alright. magic fingers, too. one of the best ever!
yeah, thought the same thing ha
I doubt it he was that coked up...He was just concentrating
Yeah well alot of guitarist move there jaws around playing guitar coke or not. Its a part of guitar face.

So at 18:55 did Roy Nichols turn down Buchanan's amp? It's been an ongoing question
It sure does look like he turned it down, never noticed that, ha

Probably the same because he would've taken the backseat in the band
I always wondered what the Band woulda sounded like if he stayed with the boys.
The stones story is a myth.
IF the story is true, doubt he would have lasted long with them - he'd be bored and they'd look for someone more flashy.
