Also prog metal

The guitar solos of Ozzy Osbourne's Mr. Crolwey song have more melody than today's mainstream music.
Yes, that always confused me with bands like Rammstein that's based entirely on the beat
Correct
When people say screamo I die a little bit
I only use it as a broad definition for metal artists who use mostly screams
I dont really consider it a genre though, more of a technique
Scremo
You shouldn't. It's one of the best genres of music to ever have been created.
@@robertsimon841 Screamo is a genre of music that is usually characterized by containing the raw energy of hardcore and crust punk and the emotional depth of emo. The result is usually music that sounds very chaotic, but very emotional at the same time, often using odd time signatures and weird song structures to heighten the chaos of the music. If you want to check it out, I would recommend Orchid - Chaos is Me as a starting point.
"Screamo lyrics"
I feel that screamo is to metal heads as weeaboo is to people that speak Japanese
They said screamo to me once, and I felt dead inside
Screamo has it's vibe if you know what it actually is, but it just has nothing to do with metal
I agree with you, but I think its more like "this song has loud vibes and screaming vocals, must be metal"
Depends on what your definition of "screamo" is. Are we talking the actual OG like pg.99, funeral diner, saetia, loma prieta, indian summer? Or are we talking about the post hardcore that came out in mid 2000s and just called themselves it? I'd say OG is not trying to be metal at all but just an evovled hardcore with influences from emo bands like embrace and rites of spring. The mid 2000s stuff though, yeah that's diving more into metal influences.

If we’re being honest metal is a ton of different genres wearing a very large trench coat
Thank you
Exactly
I mean so is rock...
The trench coat is rock music and everything in the trench coat is all the sub-genres of rock
This is very true, but I view core music as extream punk and metal-core is still punk but has metal influences. Genres are getting pretty blurry these days, which is good and bad in different ways. Nu-metal was a bunch of bands that were too different to all be in the same genre but the "metal" tag got trendy and still is.

How to discern a few different types of metal:
Grindcore goes a bit like this.
Raah! Raah rah-rah raah! Rah-rah-rah-rah-rah-rah!

I'm deep in to metal and there are so many subgenres I stopped dividing them. To me it is all the same genre. We,re all a great family and that's what I like.
This. All the infighting about subgenres is pointless and self-destructive. Almost every band incorporates styles from other genres, so trying to categorize them into a single one is a losing battle.
This is why I just call it metal
When you feel that you've already listen to it all, you may feel that way, but when is about to discover a new band with certain characteristics and want more, subgenre divisions are well welcomed to get more bands with that style.
Wolf1366 That’s fair, didn’t think about it like that!
That's the stupidest shit i've ever heard. Dividing the sub genres is the most useful tool you can have when you are looking for something specific to listen to, just like with movies. This is the kind of "like whoring" that should be punishable by death.

I'm not annoyed if someone else likes different music, I'm only annoyed if I'm in a party (for example) and something I turn on will get turned off just because its different. Because then you can actually make an argument that those other people are closeminded when they can only listen what they want but cant stand what you're wanting to listen for.

Before watching vid. 1 people don't understand the skill behind screams. 2. people are not use to hearing different instruments being played at the same time. Therefore it sounds like noise.
absolutely agree with both
1 is 2000% correct, but if they dont like the way it sounds then it doesnt really matter to them anyways. But idk about 2, theres so much music that have more than one instrument in it, and most metal bands are just guitars, bass, and drums, which are in almost every single genre of music. It'd be safer to say they arent used to hearing all the instruments being played so intensely at the same time, rather than giving one/two instrument(s) the spotlight. And tell them all music is just noise ;)
I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean by 2? Pretty much all modern genres of music use multiple instruments...
Sometimes hundreds of instruments at the same time. For example orchestral music. And Who doesn't enjoy orchestral music in movies?
@Imani Alexander But the argument wasn't that metal is "chaotic" it was that people aren't used to hearing multiple instruments at the same time. Which is beyond false!
Also I don't see how movie music being memorable or not is relevant But how is movie music not memorable? The avengers theme certainly is, people remember the Star Wars themes and countless other movies.
Maybe it's not as memorable as pop music (including much of metal)... But pop is designed to be. The song structure of pop is designed to be catchy, with you expecting the hooks and the choruses. So it isn't really fair to compare.
Disagree with 2. Pop/radio music is often mixed with tons of instruments (like 4-5 or more guitar parts + multiple keyboards, etc), although the focal point is often the vocals so I can see where you're coming from.

Hair Metal:
5:23 Honestly I think sonically, that the well produced metal albums of the past sound a lot better than a lot of albums now. I think there’s a good balance between a sonically perfect song and the rawness of the musician’s performance that made those albums great. A lot of new metal is focused a lot on getting a robotic like performance, and I still enjoy a bunch of artists that do that, there’s just a huge saturation of those genres. I just prefer hearing the actual musician to hearing digital alterations of their performances.
Nu Metal is very nostalgic to me, even if I never heard the song before. The entire genre just reminds me sitting in my dad's car 12 years ago and listening to what was on the radio.

Stevie G its just ass and not metal
@Stevie G Yes, Panic! The At Disco.
Wasn't Panic the name of Dave Mustaine's first band, before he joined Metallica?
I know someone who unironicly just likes two genres: Death Metal and Classic music like Mozart.
Metals roots come from classical music there are many similarites between metal and classical music
Dude... That's very common.
...And?
oh hey that's me
I can go from Cannibal Corpse, Cattle Decapitation to Chris Brown and Michael Jackson
I just came from another video where you were wearing a "Panic! At the disco" shirt and I think it's hilarious that you chose that shirt for this video specifically. I heard them on the radio back in 2006 when I was in highschool and I felt like I had to hide that from a lot of my metal head friends... I still enjoy his music today :)
It's okay to have many artists in a genre who sound similar or almost the same. If it's an awesome sound, you can't have too much of it.
"recorded in a cave with a toothbrush" :"DDDD
I like ur pic
I literally died laughing there😂😂😂😂😂
Power and symphonic metal are seriously underrated
I think power metal is not underrated they're pretty popular imo. But agreed with the symphony metal.
The latter is my favourite tbh.
That would be Melodic Death Metal...
DragonForce.... Nuff said
My favorite genres!
I really love these hard breakdowns by After the Burial, Born of Osiris or Burn of Sacrifice. :D
3:55 DeathTrap! Yes, potentially one of the better new genres. Huge fan and I hope it takes off
"As soon as someone has a well-established sound, and then deviate from that, there's going to be people who do not like it."
Reminds me of something from a Linkin Park song:
"Even a blueprint's a gift and a curse, 'cause once you've got the feel for how this thing works, everybody wants the next thing to be just like the first."
Plus linkin park themselves completely changed as well
@@PerfectIn3anity Not for the better, thats for sure
Can we get some Infant Annihilator to do some acoustic?
*angrily pulls out 9 string, drop L tuned guitar*
I once quoted an entire IA song to a 12 year old who wouldn't leave me alone. He cried, and ran away.
No
@@chrisc.2626 But it was a 9 string acoustic.
No
As a jazz drummer I love medal and hard rock I think it helps you as a musician understand what others do to help you get better.
I like Nu-Metal. I also like Slayer and Megadeth. I also like country and classical stuff. All music can be good, it is purely your own tastes.
I like black metal, because that's the history of my country, and I like the sound, altai and Mongolian throat singing, rap, ballads and techno pop.
If you dont like metal
WALK ON HOME BOI
I like the pantera references. Keep it up brother
REE-SPECT!
WALK!
I just never got any enjoyment out of metal. Nothing against the fans though.
Pantera!
>You dont have to invent your own god dam sub genre to succeed.
>If you criticize a metal fan of being a poser when they dont know the one underground band that only you listen to, that has put in 0 effort to get their name out there and have 0 marketing/publicity, then you are part of the problem.
I'm 60 and the guitar solo from Highway Star still takes me to a transcendent place. That is what a guitar solo can do.
Listen to Neptunian Horizons (Montalk)
The heaviest track is in the middle of the Descent album.
About the complaints on harmonic poverty in metal: Melodic Death Metal, Symphonic and Prog exist, y'know?
@IDontKnowWhatToPutAsMyUsernam e melo death is great, next to death and thrash its in the top 3
Even some of that can be garbage tho, I can think of a few albums that were total crap (Eonian by Dimmu Borgir and Dead and Alive by Parasite Inc.) because all of the songs blended together
Progressive black is fucking sick.
Some people only know how to be happy or sad, picture another emotion or idea, use faster tempos and they will be slow enough to not knowing what's happening
I fucking hate all these bloody sub genres. “I like metal core, but not speed metal or grinddeathblack core.” What a load of wank.
Anti-fan : Metal is noisy garbage !
Also Anti-fan : listens to kpop
Andron I listen to both unfortunately LOL
@@caixiuying8901 The only things I find interesting and tolerable about South Korea are Samsung and Korean Metal
@Jackie Tearie I never thought of that aspect
Wait boy bands are still a thing? I thought the backstreet boys killed that
Marcello Chua I cant say wether youre a 12 yr old discovering yourself or a bisexuall on teenage/early adulthood
6:28 I'm so late to be on this video but what's the name of that background track???That's some orgasmic drop D.
I think fit for a king is a good example of different vocal styles. and is one of my favorites
Unpopular opinion:
Not all nu-metal bands were douchy, I love the older Linkin Park, they were nu-metal but never douchy (I love all LP, but that isn't something to say at a metal channel)
Soad too
What about kid rock and limp bizkit? There are exceptions! You can't even say these names without being embarrassed by knowing they exist.
@@elijahhill7511 Haha, both were clown metal bands. Linkin Park sounded gay and childish as fuck, and SOAD sounded totally vaudeville. I don't know how anybody could take those bands seriously.
@@BatEatsMoth dude, no need of hate, idk how LP sounded to you, but they did some quite good music over the years. Still, what you're saying has a bit of truth to it
@@BatEatsMoth Usually, it's hard to form a true opinion about a band if you don't listen to a lot of their music
Metal is mainly heavy expression of one's feelings, emotions and ideologies. Kind of like when you're calling out to your friend and he can't hear you then you scream at your friend and he/she heard you. That's my definition of metal
Wait, what about power metal?
@@theenchilada1525 🤔🤔🤔
@@evansketches
Hearing stories about slaying dragon on unicorns is pretty metal.
@@theenchilada1525 😯😯🤔🤔
It can also be other themes like monsters and war. _The Call of Ktulu_ is an example.
2:49 did Jared cover that in his "some things I want to say" video?
When he started talking about for today I remembered that I met Matty at a men's conference a few years ago he's actually a pretty chill guy and if I remember correctly he played basketball with the teens at the conference when he wasn't speaking
I want a subject in school called metalography or metalhead101
And I want Jared to teach it
jossip PW that would be my favourite class.
you have to pass history of rock 101 first by jack black..
metalhead101 is my friend's username on Apex Legends lol
@@F_L_U_X lol 😂
Listen to our first singles
i dont understand why people only like 1 genre. like how can people only listen to one type of music, this goes for all genres not just metal.
Gabriel Balandis yeah I don’t stay only to Metal I listen to Rock Alternative Edm and some pop songs
I’m very experimental with sound
There is at least one song in every genre that i love, expect those pop boy bands. And there is a lot of underground rapper who wrote amazing lyrics and music.
liam neeson's particular set of skills your tastes are nothinh original
The great thing about metal, is that you have many different styles in it. Listen to blind guardian, then to amon amarth, slipknot, korn, sabaton, nightwish... They are all different.
I mainly listen to metal and folk. Sometimes I listen to other things like hardbass, western, and other types.
i mainly listen to indie music but i listen to alot of different genres cos if i like the sound of a song imma just listen to it, i don’t see how people could just stick to one genre
For the topic about not creating genres based on lyrical/visual themes; agreed. Which is why scenes get/should just organically form around those themes. Maybe the problem is when shows and festivals are being booked. Alot of times the venue heads or promoters don't understand that just because something sounds similar does not mean it will mesh in terms of audience.
For loud metal with harsh vocals and a good drum beat my mind immediately goes to Opeth, back when they had Lopez on drums. Very tasteful and groovy metal drummer.
