- We found an abandoned stone house village in Galicia, northern Spain. With the help of many incredibly skilled people we will restore it to its former beauty and beyond. We are creating a community around this project and are excited to welcome you to this documentary series that will follow us on our journey and teach you a little more about what we do here - bioconstruction, permaculture, regenerative ways of living and leading together for a more beautiful future.

Ah...my dream taking root. Wonderful! We are in Galicia, south of Lugo. We are off-grid, in a stone and cob house, we grow most of our own food and work in alignment with Nature as much as possible. Galicia is crying out for folks like you,

I'm in New Zealand, and we're homesteading on our farm. There are heaps of people who are starting to homestead & farm in their area as well. I specialize in naturally tanning skins for the purpose of making natural clothing, my brother black smiths & wood works. We have a big garden, fruit trees, animals we farm/hunt. We all know the truth, nature has everything we need & we need to return to it. Awesome video ladies.

That is one of the reasons we fell in love with Galicia. The amount of rain in winter can sometimes be a little difficult to deal with, especially in the beginning of this project when not a lot of infrastructure is ready yet, but it is great to see so many different plants growing here. Thank you very much!

Well done video! I am so very happy to see what you have started and how you are going about to bring your vision into reality! To have a balanced approach sounds so very wise and mature, which is something that has not happened often so far. As an older generation I can only say: you are the ones that we older ones who saw (when we were young) what was going wrong and now is the time for you to bring it all to life. I am not saying that the older generation is not needed or should be part of this or similar project, what I mean is that we really need to see such dedication and powerful desire in action (as our way to do our best has been a very long one). Europe is definitely more ready for this that the United States but Europe had the crises end of the patern first, mirror side of the patern would be that United States would need the crises soon to be able to accept change.

Cool cool but the biggest emitters are the rich who travel a lot… Mobility & time to travel equals the carbon footprint. The idea of going back to nature is great, but not in the context of more & more traveling. Make this happen in your hometown & introduce a new way of living where the people actually live. ❤
Hi Chris, you're absolutely right to point out that traveling is responsible for a big part of emissions while only a small percentage of the global population is actually having the privilege of going places. We also deeply agree with starting projects like these close to where you live. Manolo, for example, is from the area here in Galicia and a few others are already living full time here and are registered as well. More are planning to move here in the next months.
We believe it to be important to bring together people from all over Europe and the world because the meta crisis we as a species are facing is one that can only be solved if there is international cooperation on all levels. This means that not only politicians and experts should be meeting each other at conferences but citizens should intermingle and connect to create a human identity beyond national borders, languages and cultural traditions. We don't believe that decreasing mobility per se is a solution for us to figure out how we can live a regenerative life together on this planet. It will require a balance between reducing carbon emissions while still allowing people to connect with each other.
Moreover, the north of Spain will certainly see an increase of population over the next few decades and infrastructure will be built here to serve the people one way or another. Ideally we want to be a regional influence that pushes for a regenerative approach. We are very happy to continue the dialogue and learn from you if your view on these matters is different to ours. Thank you for providing a honest and critical voice in the comments.

I’m looking at houses to renovate in Galicia (my mother is from there) and want to volunteer on a project like yours to learn from what you’re doing. I have training in carpentry and I’m a neuroscientist focused on trauma and neurodevelopmental disorder, though I suspect my woodworking and building skills might be more useful to the project? Would love to get in touch.
I would love to be part of something like this, but as of now instead of positive and constructive I am angry, spitefull and not fit to join such a lovely place. I would bring it down around me..

Hey, Lars (filmmaker) here. Thank you so much for the compliment. It is rather easy to film incredible shots with the drone here to be honest. Stay tuned for some really nice ones in the next episode dropping in August. The drone model is the DJI mavic air 2s. An older model but it is one of the best DJI ever created. The larger sensor really makes a difference!

hey this is great, i've been looking for a nice piece of land with a ruin to renovate for me and a few other people, to start living in commune with a shared mission. i'm in italy though. I was wondering, how hard is it in Galicia to go about building and renovating on a piece of land? Is there a lot of bureaucracy involved? Do you get any funds from the government?
In Italy it's tricky cuz there's a lot of paperwork (some of this paperwork is also expensive to obtain), but the positive thing is that you could get some funds if the building abides by energy sustainability standards. Would be interesting to know how it is there! Anyway, sending my support for your journey, it'll be a pleasure to follow you!
Hey Jimmy, thank you so much for your support! We are at the very beginning of our journey and so far we haven't yet approached the government for any funding but we are on it. Probably for places that have a public interest (like the theater and community house we want to build) it is more easy to get some funding but we will have to figure it all out in the coming months and years.
We are currently in the process of talking to officials to be able to build on some pieces of land here that currently we legally aren't allowed to. So far it looks good. We will be talking about this more in the future for sure! Greetings back to Italy :)

We are not quite sure if we read your comment correctly. In case you're asking for english subtitles for the spanish parts, they are included in the "spanish" subtitles you can turn on in the settings. For efficiency reasons we only provide one subtitle file that translates spanish to english and english to spanish at the same time.

So what are the realistic solutions you propose to today's complex problems? Complex problems in the area where you are located are many, such as little to none working opportunities, lack of internet connectivity or phone landlines, (you depend on your mobile phone) , long distances to amenities with no public transport whatsoever, very poor public infrastructure, rapidly decreasing aged community (average of 85-90 years old) and the list goes on.
No self reliant sustainably? Depending on funds from?
You talk about hope, so are you targeting hopeless people?
Stablishing these "projects" and "hubs" in Galicia have clearly become a business model, a source of income rather than an sharing space for the actual community.
Your neighbours, who have been living in the area for generations, are already well suited and trained for the natural environment they dwell in, and know a lot about sustainability, living off the land etc... but hey, maybe it's time to reinvent the wheel 😂
I think it'd be quite unfair to put this off as just a trendy business-modell. Of course the neighbours have lived with this land for ages and have great knowledge of how to create systems that work for the region. But they explicitly said, that they seek the involvement with the locals (of whom Manolo is also one who's Family has been living in the region for centuries) to learn with and from their practices. Also if you look at the demographic developments of the rural areas everywhere and Galicia is no exception to this you will see that the youth is fleeing to the cities because there is nothing happening on the countryside. So it's hardly an intergenerationaly sustainable situation if the youth feels like it has no future there. This is why we need more of these projects. The more the merrier.

everything starts with the first step and even small steps will lead to a solution that helps everyone once a group of people is able to harmoniously work together. I have no doubt that this group of people will achieve what they dream of! This is the new world that is being created by heart based people with a strong vision and strong sense of reality and what can be done. Our world is already changing and this group has the authenticity to realise things. 🙂
Projects like this one try to have the reality of today meet with old / new wisdom and old / new technologies like bioconstruction, LiDAR mapping and much more. In a world of 8+ billion people, hundreds of millions of people will be on the move in the next decades and this includes people in Europe as well. In Spain many people will move towards the north and new infrastructure will be built here in Galicia in one way or another. Ideally in a regenerative way that will serve future generations as well. The fact that there is people exploiting projects and hubs solely for profit seeking doesn't mean they all do. Btw, the community here in Galicia is not "rapidly decreasing". If you look at the statistics it is pretty much stagnant for the past 30 years. Also, the average age is not 85-90 years but 47,5 (which is incredibly old) - I don't doubt that you come from a good place and I hope you can give people a chance to prove that there is still groups of individuals trying to built a better place for themselves and "hopeless people" as well. Looking forward to more dialogue.

For us, it's not about competing with the neighbours or wanting to reinvent the wheel - but more about bringing people together so there can be an exchange of knowledge, learning from and with the locals and finding good solutions together for the region - and maybe even inspiring other regions and guests, students and other people on site with our learnings and solutions. We truly want to be well integrated in the local ecosystem so that the locals feel proud and part of this project and not vice versa. Let's see if we can make this happen!
And creating sustainable new structures hopefully brings back the younger generations and with it, more working opportunities, better public transport and so on - without municipalities or people who take the step to create attractive infrastructure, regions will only lose more of it I think?!
We also aim to be financially self-reliant to not depend on regular funds in the future without being only profit-oriented. We will talk more about it in the documentary .
I would be very happy if you continue to share, be attentive and follow and question our approach! This is how we learn!
