It always amazes me how you are able to find such hidden gems. I worked for a few PS1/2 magazines back in the day. I thought I knew of so many games, and have bought seemingly everything I needed. And yet you ALWAYS end up coming up with something I'd just not heard of - the Adventures of Little Ralph is something I MUST get now. Thank you for this - please keep it up!
@@MetalJesusRocks Yup, that's pretty much my experiences of shopping in Japan too. Last time I went was back in 2008, and myself and my daughters ahd a fairly long list and there wasn't a single thing we couldn't find. Some of it was even in those bonkers 500 yen bargain bins. Got a lovely statue of Tidus from FF X for 500 yen. I always love your hidden gems anyway as you've turned me onto some stuff I'd never have found :)
@@alexandersalazar9750 Nah, I just liked going there. My first visit was PURELY to shop, funnily enough. Then once I experienced the beauty of the country and found that I completely gelled with them, I had to return.

Nice haul! I was just returning from Japan as you were leaving so it was fun to have a second vacation watching your videos. The one thing I've learned about shopping in Japan is that, like the Matrix, no one can be told what there is to buy: you need to experience it for yourself. There are cool things there that we as Westerners cannot even imagine.
Front Mission 5 , the last straw from Front Mission series before it change from turn based system to third person shooter.... honestly because your video mentioned it , that make me wanna replay the FM 3 . Thanks MJ!
..."yeah, yeah...I picked it up.." That is the trueness of a proper Collector. Even if its a first person shooter game with an ecstasy gun targeting teens and you don't agree with it, you gotta get it to complete. Love it.

I was NOT aware of that Toaplan Arcade Garage 'collection' game on the Switch. Thank you very much for picking it up because I would have never known otherwise. I'll definitely try to grab a copy somewhere like eBay. However, maybe interesting to note that - on Steam - there is a similar collection of Toaplan arcade games, and Twin Cobra for example of one of them (but Tiger Heli is not, it's a relatively different collection but there's similarities). Anyways, thanks MJR, your videos rock :)
great series! Brings me back to my days of trolling around Akihabara in the mid 2000's. Dollar bins were full of gold, Sofmaps were great, Book-Offs were better! Super Potato was always priced higher than everyone else as far as I remember.
In Japan now and concur as to the current state of things, thrift stores are the way to go! I'm living in Yamanashi so all of my local stores are super well stocked with tons of great games for cheap across many consoles. Like, I don't think I've spent more than 550yen on all of my pick-ups there! Were there finds even cheaper than that in the early 2000's?
@@benl5481 back then there were true 100Yen bins full of SFC complete boxed games, PS1, PS2, Agetec DC arcade sticks for 100-500 yen, Neo Geo AES CIB consoles for 10,000, the list was endless. My absolute best pick up was a CIB Virtual Boy with about a dozen CIB games, it was missing the big hitters but I got it all for 3000 yen at a bookoff.

Awesome pick ups! While watching this video i just grabbed that Kamen Rider Vita game on Ebay for abour 20 bucks! Cant wait to get that in a few days. Wanted to pick that up years ago but it was super expensive then.
Hey Metal Jesus one of the best Japan exclusive games is Chiisana Kyojin Little Giant Microman for PS1 Playstation. Micronauts with guns fighting the Acroyear... a two player game so could have drunken master Paul join in on the fun. 😊
I just came back from Japan a few days, and bought Grim Guardians. 😀 I also grabbed a few other games like Ender Lilies, Deedlit and Overlord. I was interested in Metroidvanias. I grabbed a few random retro stuff as well.
I love me my metroidvanias! I already had Deedlit and ordered Grim Guardians and Overlord yesterday on Amazon Japan (alas, Ender Lilies wasn't available).
@RetroMoments I found some good deals on Vita games but Goldeneye on N64 was priced at $70 or more, so I had to leave it. Would've been great for speedrunning.
Truth is...I can get a lot of Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive and more locally here in Seattle. Current Japanese Switch games?! Almost nobody has them locally...
I think that I only missed Kevin Bacon reviewing those 72 seasons because of that bass in the corner, Dude. I'd really like to open a finger boarding shop for fun at LA, but I'm sure that they won't let me finish my taxes, before it would be just a memoria.
Great pickups dude, I have that same Red PSP and the camera doesn't do it justice that colour is sublime, Has a real nice sparkle to it. For sure my favourite PSP console I have, got it from Sendico and it was VERY cheap.
Something interesting to note with that Grim Guardians / Gal Guardians game that wasn't mentioned, but is relevant since Gal Gun was mentioned earlier. The characters of Grim Guardians are the characters & antagonist from the 2nd Gal Gun game "Gal Gun Double Peace". I guess Inti Creates liked the characters enough and had fun making the Bloodstained Curse of the Moon games that they smooshed them together. If I remember right, some early western reviews of the game referred to it as a "Metroidvania" so there was some bickering about that since it's much more of a Castlevania homage like the Bloodstained Curse of the Moon games were.
Dollar to Yean rate has doubled in the last 10 years. Basically, everything is cheaper 50% for the Americans. Great time to visit old Japan if it's on your bucket list.
Awesome video mate i love your pickup videos im more of a nintendo switch collector now and thanks to your video ill have to add a couple of these to the list
I remember the Godzilla PS4 was received negatively when it first came out in the states back in 2015, so I was kind of surprised to hear in this video that its considered to be one of the best Godzilla games out there.
That's an amazing haul. I'm currently in Toyama, so I spent a lot of time traveling around the countryside visiting Hardoffs and Manga Warehouses to find some good deals. Ill be returning with a pretty sizable SFC collection. I know Akihabara is expensive, but which shops had the best prices? I'll be there in 2 days.
Compared with Toyama, Akihabara is going to be very expensive. Best bet is the Surugaya store, if you're looking for something a little niche you might get lucky; like I found Roadster for the GameBoy in Surugaya there for about 800yen 2 years ago, a slightly harder to come by GameBoy game. Not exactly gonna set the world on fire, but it's my jam.
There‘s also a physical version of Eastward out here in Germany that‘s not that expensive. Guess I’m going to pick this one up since a 20h game is perfect for me. The cover of the japanese version looks way better, though.

Apparently it's driving up the cost for the local Japanese retro gamers and making old games much harder to find for them. Since all the old stock of retro games is leaving Japan and never returning. Thoughts?

The japanese cover of Lost Odyssey is actually drawn by Takehiko Inoue, the mangaka that created Slam Dunk and Vagabond!
