I do think the Black Label imprint would have had a more significant impact and kept high-end talent interested if they hadn’t reacted so cowardly to the very first pushback.

    Please don’t give up.
This is by FAR the absolute best comics channel on this or other platforms.
Your stuff is totally top-notch, brilliantly presented + excellently/thoroughly researched.
No-one else even comes close to covering the things you do as well as you do.
Every video is a pleasure to watch + re-watch.
It’s criminal how little recognition you get, but truly, quality always wins out in the end, + you have it in spades sir !!!...
Please hang in there, it’s selfish I know, but those of us who watch REALLY love + appreciate your work.
Wishes for the best for you from the UK.

Glad to hear you enjoyed WW: Dead Earth as that was one of my favorites from Black Label as well. DWJ's artwork goes really well with the oversized format and he was clearly having a blast drawing it. I'll admit DWJ as a writer kind of does the same thing over and over again with slight differences, characters dealing with grief or loss interspliced with insane action beats, but I think Dead Earth is probably my favorite execution of his formula (though I haven't read all of his stuff yet). If you liked Dead Earth I would recommend his other stuff, he's a master of really well executed action comics that also make you feel things. Not a revolutionary, but damn good at what he does

Strange Adventures and Dead Earth were really great. Daniel Warren Johnson has a very rough and emotive sketchbook feel to his art, and while I think his stories are more simple, I don't mean that in a bad way because it leaves so much room for the rawness of his art to express the heart of the characters, and he's just so good at that. One of my favorite people in comics over the last few years. Strange Adventures felt like a very introspective take on a golden age character I wasn't that familiar with admittedly, but it really reminded me of Black Hammer emotionally. King and Lemire are some of my favorites in the biz, and Lemire returning to Sweet Tooth is something that should excite me, but I love that book so dearly that I just don't think I want to be let down if the new material isn't good. Sometimes I think it's just better to let sleeping dogs lie, especially when what was put together originally is such a masterwork of storytelling. I still get emotional when I think about that ending.

    • @StrangeBrainParts

While that is a more surface-level retelling, it was the one that appealed to me the most. I think the label’s over reliance on Batman characters turned me off very quickly to checking out the other titles, although after this video, I think I might seek out a couple others.

Sometimes I feel like DC's motto should be "Our only goal is to break our toys to prove how grownup we are." Black Label is the leading line for that. Every single time I've read something from them, the characters are broken in some way. Superman. The Question (I literally don't know what the point was of that story, it felt like there was supposed to be a fifth issue.) Adam Strange (please, Tom King, just stop). Then there's all the "I don't know how to tell this character's genre of story, so I'll do a post-apocalyptic story instead." The only books in this year that worked for me were Batman: Damned (because DC has kept throwing weird background stuff at the Waynes and Gotham for so long that there's no reason the Enchantress couldn't be part of Batman's origin story at this point) and Harleen (because it did exactly what it promised in telling the sketched-over story of Harley Quinn's origin, showing how she could see the Joker as a misunderstood person because of the way he acted around her -- if telling a simple story simply is wrong, then what's the point of comic books at all?).
Mind you, Marvel's been breaking its own heroes in their own way. Back in '84-'85 Marvel had Secret Wars, a fun tale of bashing their superhero toys together, and DC had their first Crisis, a heavy event with the fate of worlds and histories in the balance. Now Marvel bashes their toy soldiers together and pretends the results had a point beyond selling magazines, and DC pretends to profound, adult ideas wrapped around characters meant to instill hope and virtues in children. It's all just depressing -- the last thing superheroes should be.

Take a tour of 'The New Statesmen' of 1988. These were all going for the 'darkest sketch' awards Miller had won pretty fairly by 'Give Me Liberty'. I have no idea how 'Martha Washington Goes To War' came out. Heavy criticism of the 'Superhero' conceit, deep post-human threads. I couldn't get it out of my head till at least 10 years later.

in my opinion it was great idea making this imprint, not as a new Vertigo but just like you said as a darker superhero content... In fact, it really sucks that they don't think about it back on 80', maybe series like Lobo, Demon, Deadman, Spectre, Question, Shadow, Sandman Mystery Theatre, Starman and few more would be right now more noticed by comic fans. In fact there's not even proper edition of this runs or they are out of print like Starman series.

What disappointed me about Black Label was how tame it felt. Barring the Bat-dong controversy, none of the titles felt radically different from what DC was already publishing to warrant an entire label. They were just minis that were slightly more violent and dropped a swear hear and then.
Vertigo felt countercultural and offbeat. Black Label feels like a gimmick to sell graphic novels.

The first one is decent. The second one is very great, reminiscent to the glory days of the 80s run by Denny O'Neill. The third one is entertaining, way better than the author's Batman run or even Metal. The last one was pretty meh for me story wise, but I love Bermejo's artwork.
