Nice video Martin I have questions on building a VoIP server for my home all I need is to be able to call the extensions, have a voicemail box for them, call forward and intercom and paging and you do that all for free any advice?
@@mason_thegoat-_-7687 Absolutely, if you want to have a home VoIP server without paying a dime you can set up a virtual machine with freepbx on your computer and use soft phones to connect to it, say from other computers in your house and existing cell phones.
@@Martin-NTalso I’d like to add that I need VoIP phones in a couple rooms (office bedroom etc, would I need to run Ethernet jacks to have a multiple phones in different rooms
@@Martin-NT The bad thing with Magic Jack is if you get a used number that was used for spam, it will always show as spam on caller id. Even if you change the name in the Caller Id setting. I am having to look for a new solution now.
The 3PCC phones do not need a firmware change. For the 79XX series, I believe you need to change the firmware to SIP for FreePBX but there are plugins like SCCP Manager that you can use. I don't have much experience with 79XX series phones though.
Waiting to figure out how to reprogram my Cisco phones to SIP. Can’t get the phones to take the programming, very frustrating. Do I have to do reprogramming through free PBX because trying to reprogram via direct connect to a window computer does not seem to work. Even on the help sites there are some individuals with serious attitude issues like they are in god mode and seem annoyed at receiving questions. As for hooking up to the outside world I have a 4 port Grandstream FXO box. For external connection to the pots line, I have a Grandstream four port FXO adapter. The reason for this I’d that these older Cisco phones have (had?) a security exploit where people could hack into your network and into your computers on everything inside your home network. This adapter will also allow me to add a pair of two way radio interfaces to Pots line adapters to the system. This allows me to monitor what is going on with a radio network as well as allowing radios to contact me directly at my office. If you have any suggestions on reprogramming older Cisco phones, please share. It would be greatly appreciated!
@Subgunman Just saw your comment updates, I could have sworn it was shorter. To answer your questions, there is an SCCP Manager plugin that allows you to provision Cisco phones with the SCCP firmware. Cisco SIP phones are iffy and are difficult to configure, I was never successful with it. If you really want to use Cisco phones like the 79XX series, I recommend just leaving them on SCCP firmware and use the SCCP Manager. I don't have much experience with SCCP manager though. Hope this helps!
Do you mean can you use any phone with Cisco CUCM? I don't have experience with CUCM so I can't have a confirmed answer for that, but I do know it should accept third party SIP phones along with proprietary Cisco phones.
Well, Paging and Intercom does not work on it unless I set it into auto answer, and I've also had issues in the past where it would not place or end calls properly.
@@Martin-NT you have to put a few lines into the phones config files to get paging to work. The Polycom templates in the freepbx endpoint manger which I use for my community PBX has those but you can just add those by exporting the phones config and adding them and importing it again
Should I upgrade to FreePBX Version 17? With new updates and a better "Apply Config" button, I think it may be time to move on. If I do upgrade, I will release FreePBX IP PBX Phone System Tour 4.0 if major changes are also made to the system, if not it will be 3.7.
hey amazing video, i would love to see how you did custom page sounds, i have freepbx set up an right now im just using the default beep tone and i really hate it lol.
After years of running cisco, indecided to try freepbx 16 and what crap…. Every way I try and install it I run into some sort of issues at one point or another
FreePBX can be difficult to get set up if you are first starting with it. I recommend browsing the FreePBX forums and watching tutorials online. Chris from Crosstalk Solutions has an excellent series of videos on FreePBX for beginners.
@trincolio Apologies, I can't seem to find that comment anymore or maybe it was on another video. To set up a custom tone, go to Applications > Paging and Intercom, select your zone then choose a custom tone from the list, it has to be uploaded to System Recordings under the Admin tab first though, and then make sure to Auto-answer defaults to None and Quiet to Yes in the Paging & Intercom settings tab as it tends to add an annoying beep with the custom paging tone, it will affect the intercom tone though. Hope this helps, and sorry for the really late response.
@@gonzomax111 The reason of these phones isn't solely for communications, it's my home lab for experimentation. Also, just because someone has WhatsApp or Messenger doesn't mean it's convenient, i.e. for paging and intercom.
Oh maaannnn I miss these kind of phones if Smartphones become a privacy nightmare let's bring back landlines and pay phones to cut the bills in half my folks probably don't want something like this even though I think it's a good idea just in case of power outages.

I have freepbx in my house for personal use. I never registered it with FreePBX. Have you registered your system and if so, did they give you any issues?
By registering, I'm assuming you mean register your instance with Sangoma. I haven't had any issues without registering it but to install commercial modules you must register. For homelab not registering it is fine.
I do apply the config, but when I leave the server alone for a while and log back in later to change something, I see the button reappears by itself. Applying config on 16 takes a while as well, so I just leave it alone until I actually make a change. Kind of a nuisance for me, but I brush it off now, haha. 😅
Yes, I do, but my preferred communication for channel-related content is here on UA-cam. If I do ever intend to make a Discord server I will let you guys know.

Unfortunately no, only SIP Trunks or you use a FXO switch for POTS lines.

The 3PCC phones do not need a firmware change. For the 79XX series, I believe you need to change the firmware to SIP for FreePBX but there are plugins like SCCP Manager that you can use. I don't have much experience with 79XX series phones though.

Cisco phones on other PBX's instead of CUCM can be infuriating. I've registered my Cisco phones on FreePBX as I have the 3PCC verison.

Unfortunately I'm not enrolled in the TandmX network so I can't do that. I do remember trying to do it once but gave up after a while.

You can upload a page tone through System Recordings and then set it through the Paging and Intercom tab.

To be honest, I don't really have a reason for having it named STA #, STA just stands for "station", such as station 310.
