9:35 I lived in the area in the late 80s. The current images you show look like a different city entirely. That development in the 90s was gentrification.
great vid. glad to actually learn somehting i didnt know about the explosion. Was watching a video earlier where the girl explaining it wrote Darthmouth. haha
I had to look this up since I didn't know anything about it. My husband's grandmother just told me about this because her mother was there when this happened. She was either leaving for school or leaving school. Her parents were there for her dad's job on a steamship. Going to have to ask her more about it
I grew up here in the late sixties - eighties. Thanks for putting this together. My question is did countries responsible for the explosion contribute to the rebuilding of the city?
How about a video on the proposed "completion" of the quad at Dal? Some of these sketches are, preposterously, proposing a mirror building similar to Killam (why have 1 monstrosity when you could build two!?).
I loved the part where it said the cement (stone) blocks were too heavy to be taken up the hill. Sure makes you wonder how they moved all the stone, granite and marble that was used in some of the older classic buildings that were skyscrapers. When they couldn't even haul a stone block up a little hill ... lmao ! 🤔🥴
Personally, even though it looks great today, the planning board would face charges today. That money was ment for the survivors and they diverted it for thier own use. That's fraud. And going by today's judgment, thier living relatives should be held accountable. If I'm accountable for the native Americans and the African Americans then the same should hold true. They screwed them over, now thier relatives and the new home owners owe them shit loads of money (compound interest). Just how I feel.
Another great video! Learned a few new facts. I didn't know there was so much controversy surrounding the hydrostone.
I’m really glad you guys did this video. You should do an “After the Explosion” series of videos.
Excellent documentary video.
Ngl, Hydrostone sounds lika a *badass* name for a district...
I like the music. Very uplifting, fitting of this historical event.
I am Halifax born and bred, and Ilived in the hydrostone area for 45 yeare, and i miss it so much that i,m moving back in the spring
my aunt lived in hydrostone for over a decade. I think it's one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the city if not the country

Following a disaster, there is no back to normal. There is always a new normal which usually pleases very few.
That garden city project its basically the Venus project by Jake Fresco. Too bad it didn't came true.
MY AUNT mS. ETHEL HANN BORN IN NEW FOUNDLAND, NEVER SPOKE OF THIS, NOT EVER!
The birth of Halifax' 5 Minute City. Now it's more of a Trudeau Town.
