i am looking to buy gear to go get my open water,as i was looking at the mares travel light pakage you answered al the questions i had about the reg set that comes whit it( X72 ultra),so i will get the mares travel light hehe
Excellent review! Aside from the obvious differences between the 72x and 82x first stages (port configuration, swivel turret, coating, etc), are there any significant differences in functionality, breathability, or internals? Additionally, you stated that 'you can pair' these with... and, you listed specific second stage regulators. Couldn't these two be paired with other regulators? I have several older Mares second stages that are excellent and am only interested in the first stages. Thank you for any input you can add; and, thank you so much for all your wonderful videos!!
Hello Lara Via. As far as breath-ability, these two first stages breathe very similarly. In regards to pairing them with other second stages, you can most certainly pair them with any second stage you choose. As far as buying new though, they only come with the second stages mention in the video.
@@LakeHickoryScuba I have a ? For ya I have a ocean reef gdiver that was given to me by my a good friend it had not been used in a while. I can't get the reg to quit hissing no matter how I adjust it. I'm thinking the seat is bad. What would your advice be
You will need to find an Ocean Reef Service Center, and you can have them rebuild the second stage for you. The process is pretty simple, but only a service center can gets parts for you.
I would call them and see if you can ship it to them. We have another local dealer in the are, Air Tech Scuba Services, and that is their main business. People send ever regulator known to man to them for servicing issues.
@@LakeHickoryScuba Haha I will ask one day! But thanks for the detailed video - Mares isn't a huge brand here so not much information from my local dive stores and these vids are a valuable resource. Ordered in a Blue Battle that should complement the Abyss nicely once it arrives! Next time I'm in the US, I'll try to visit you!
For waters that cold, I would only recommend the Navy Abyss. It is the COLD WATER specific regulator in the Mares Line. It is the one I personally use for all my cold water diving, including ICE DIVING.
On the Air Control inflator reg, how would you personally rate it as a breather? Would you use it for cold water diving or any other extreme diving conditions?
I know this is responding to an older video... How do you decide which 1st stage and 2nd stage to purchase? Is it important to upgrade if my older Mares Abyss and M22 are still functions fine? Debating benefits of upgrading to Dual with 52x. Your thoughts are appreciated.
Hello Jeremiah Perez. Great question. In short, it all comes down to personal preference. The Dual 52 X is no longer in production, just as a quick heads up. And to be honest, the Mares Abyss 22 is still the best breathing regulator Mares has ever produced (in my opinion of course), so unless you just are in the market for a new regulator, I would stick with it. Now if you are looking for an upgrade, then I can't speak highly enough on the Mares Epic 82 X. That is currently what I am using as my every day regulator, and the one I use for teaching most of the courses, minus Public Safety, Sidemount, and Technical Courses.
Hello Jacob Krause, all Mares Regulators can be O2 serviced. They do make one specifically for Oxygen, its the Mares XR R2S. It comes with the VR second stage.
g Davis "What happens when you exceed your regulator's rated depth?" Generally it just becomes harder to breath than what the average diver would find comfortable. It won't just suddenly stop giving air.

Just got a 25x dr set for my doubles. This is going to new for me I have always dove Sherwood maximus.
I currently use the 25XR DR set for my Sidemount Rig. Very robust and heavy. It should work great for your doubles.

Why did they discontinue the Abyss? I've been wanting to pick up a second one!
Hello Josh, that's a question you will need to ask Mares. I like them as well.

As always, great video! If I plan to dive in cold waters (35ºF), is the 82x paired with the ultra a good option? Thank you!

As far as breathability, its fine. I would not personally use it for cold water, as it is not designed for it.
Could the standard rubber hoses be replaced on the vertical (X15 and X72 Loop) regulators with flexible type hoses?
Hello Jorge Tapia, great questions. And yes they can be replaced with flexible hoses.

You're welcome.
Can I combine Fusion 72X with Epic Octopus?
Hello patryka11, you most certainly can mix the two.
Are any of these regs able to be O2 cleaned to 100%?
Hello Jacob Krause, all Mares Regulators can be O2 serviced. They do make one specifically for Oxygen, its the Mares XR R2S. It comes with the VR second stage.

Thank You, glad you liked it.
What happens when you exceed your regulator's rated depth?
Great question, I’ve never been that deep. I will let you know if I ever exceed the rated depth set by the manufacturer.

Ultra or Fusion?
Hello Jaber Tagi, the Ultra is the only one between the two that is still being produced. Both are great regulators though.
@@LakeHickoryScuba thank you
Which one is your favorite
I personally like all of them except the Fusion, Dual ADJ, Ultra ADJ, and the Epic ADJ. I’m just not a big fan of the adjustable second stages.
