    I tried this in the drumshop in japan. The shell was very thick.3mm brass shell(reference series's wood shells are 20 plies!!)! So hard to lifted because of the heavy weight! Sound was very loud and super tight.Impressed and I recommend this♪

      And you know, or at least you should, if you were blind folded, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a cast snare and a rolled snare.
      Just as professional violinists cannot tell the difference between a 2000$ Yamaha violin and a 100,000$ strat.
      It’s perception.
      We know this with everything, with food, with music, with art, with instruments, with cars, with literally everything. When you buy a 3000$ snare, you are paying for a 500$ snare with 2500$ worth of imagined worth.

      @@mellowtron214 Normally I agree that drummers shouldn't get too hung up on snare shell material or how it's made and make judgements based on sound. I have a Gretch cast bronze or "Bell Brass" snare and it's undeniably different than any other snare I've played. Most cast shells are in a different (higher)league than other snares.

    The King of Snares! Personally, I don't think any other brass snare drum sounds as good as the Pearl. The DW and SJC are also 3mm 'bell' brass, but they sound dry and tinny in comparison to the Pearl, which has a nice fat, wet tone. However, comparisons are odious and getting these drums into a sound-room and trying to separate them would be fraught with difficulties. You would need to fit them with exactly the same heads, torqued to exactly the same settings, and the same snare wires, again at the same tension and then set them all on the same model stands on the same flooring and in the same position in the room. Obviously, if you're going to compare them side-by-side, then you will have to compromise on that last thing. Even so, it would be a major pain in the ass.
    The elephant in the room is cost. You can buy a DW and an SJC bell brass snare for the price of a Pearl, which is a bit ridiculous.
    So is it worth it? I think it is, because if I bought a cheaper drum and maybe customized it a bit and then told other people that it was just as good as a Pearl, I would still know, in my heart of hearts, that it wasn't. I would still want the Pearl, even if I bought all the other brass snares on the planet, because this is the benchmark. The King of Snares!

      Hey man I'm looking to buy a new snare and you seem to know what you're talking about. I like my snare to have a lot of attack, a very tight crack sound but with little to no after tone. I've been recommended to get a Ludwig supraphonic but its a little it to pricey so was wondering what the next best thing would be?

    Is there anything that makes this snare better than DW's Collector's Metal Smooth Brass snare? It comes in the same size and is 3mm bell brass for only around $550, and I think it sounds much better.

    • @sjholmes101
      @sjholmes101 10 років тому +1

      Jan Patrick Lucas The prefix "bell" for brass shell has to do with the alloy, not the way the shell was made. The Tama Starphonic which is almost five times as expensive as the Drum Workshop 3mm brass snare is also rolled brass, they just finish it differently, and the Pearl is also rolled "bell" brass. The alloy of brass they use in all brass snares usually classifies it as *bell brass* if the shell is not beaded, or finished with nickel like black beauty-style snares, therefore is can resonate like a 'bell', if you will. All three snares are made of the same alloy brass, rolled, and touched up with the companies' highest-end hardware and features, while Drum Workshop's Collector's Series drums are made in America, unlike Tama or Pearl, and I doubt $500 could come out of hardly any difference in shell makeup, especially when neither Tama or Pearl are known for having superior craftsmanship in comparison to Drum Workshop.

      Jan Patrick Lucas I don't know the answer, I'm asking why it is that much overpriced. Pearl's shell construction is almost identical to DW's, only it is welded. Just read their website for this snare. DW makes a bronze snare, bell bronze and bell brass are completely different things, the tin alloy in brass does not make it "bell brass".

      +Spencer Jacob Holmes “zoIofty”
      HI, it is a common mistake to think that "Bell Brass" is actually brass. Tama's legendary bell brass snare, and all the "reissues" made later (Warlord, Lars Ulrich Signature, Starphonic, and anniversary limited edition) are made of bell bronze (around 15% tin 85% copper). Some bell makers explain that both alloys are used in bell making, and often mistaken by people. But definitely, bell brass is bronze, any manufacturer that makes this kind of sanres can tell you.
