12.02.23 The Beatles 1st State Butcher Cover Auction Highlight

The first highlight from our Fall Comics, Sports, and Toys auction on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023.
Lot 482: The infamous 1966 Beatles Butcher cover! "The Beatles Yesterday And Today" T 2553 LP 1st state record sleeve, in overall good condition with light wear as expected from age and storage, corners with minor denting, white paper showing signs of aging, album retains original cellophane wrap slit along right side so album could be removed. This is only the record sleeve, does not include the record itself. Consigned to us by a gentleman who's father was a local radio DJ who kept the sleeve after receiving the record at his station, please refer to photographs.
This album cover caused controversy when released for the image of the band surrounded by broken baby dolls and raw meat. In response to the criticism, Capitol pulled the cover and issued replacement stickers to hide the original image.
This rare piece of music history sold for $7,750 + BP!

Hmm..first state mono, no vinyl. $7750.00 I suppose the vinyl is easy enough to find as it could be from any early pressing 2nd state with a trashed cover.
