Just a footnote from an Italian that letterally grew up using Fabriano papers. Fabriano it's been in business since year 1264; it was used by artists as Michelangelo, Raffaello, Francis Bacon, Georgia O’Keeffe and many, many others so I really doubt their paper to be faulty in any way. Next time, instead of the drawing paper, try their 300 gr. 100% cotton watercolour one, it's really one of the best of the best in the world.

Usually if a sketchbook says it’s made with “drawing paper”, that usually means that it’s for dry media in my experience

I was going to comment that I liked this sketchbook and you showed a clip of my video 😂
I got my book in a smart art box with colored pencils so I had no expectations of it being good for watercolor but it worked well for me. I think if I bought it as a watercolor sketchbook I might have expected more tho.

It doesn’t seem fair to expect lightweight (90 lb) non cotton paper to behave like cotton paper that is made for watercolor. Of course you couldn’t get a nice wash! That is lesson one in doing watercolors: paper quality is key. Paints and brushes are WAAAY secondary on how to spend your money.

This sketchbook is made of Accademia paper, which is best for pencil or tempera. Fabriano indicates this on their website and has been my experience with Accademia paper too. Perhaps a bit of gouache would be OK. It is not a manufacturer error, the sketch OOK is fine if/when used for its intended media. I have a whole 10m roll of Fabriano Academia, which I tear into small pieces or drawing sketchbooks. It is a great surface for pencils, coloured pencils, ink, India ink, among others. I hope you find the sketchbook with the paper you like!

I have a Strathmore 500 series Mixed Media 100% cotton sketchbook. The description says it’s ‘excellent for watercolor, gouache, acrylic, graphite, pen and ink, colored pencil, marker, pastel and collage’. That’s all I needed to know so I bought it. Weeeeell at the beginning when I used it I didn’t like it for watercolor. It doesn’t have the sizing I’m used to (or may be none, I don’t know about these things), for wet washes, granulation, and yes it easily creates blooms. However, after painting smaller subjects that didn’t require wet washes, now I’m used to it and I bought another, larger one! It’s excellent for colored pencils. Ultimately it wasn’t the sketchbook that was at fault, but my technique that needed adjusting. ☺️

That's great. I like that for you. I'm currently using loose 9 x 12 inch sheets of Series 300 Strathmore cold press watercolour 300gsm paper until I can find a journal that enables me to work in my preferred way. I use standard visual diaries for sketching., colour notes etc. Have you tried rice paper for ink and watercolour? It's very challenging but excellent for loose painting and you learn to control water very quickly!

Oh god. Strathmore 500. I HATE this sketchbook for watercolours with burning passion. A lot of artists I loved online really like this one and recommend it, and I was hyped to try it out. And turns out, nothing I create on it with watercolours looks good. Nothing! My biggest problem is that it dulls the colours down significantly (I know it's cotton, but it somehow dulls it down more than in my other cotton sketchbooks). First I thought that I'm not good enough, so I practiced on other paper, and every time I came back to it, the same problem persisted. I found that what looked good on it in my technique was ink, not watercolours. Which was fine, but since I bought it for watercolours, I was sort of bummed. You're right in the regard that it's often about the technique but it sometimes feel disappointing to buy an expensive sketchbook for a specific purpose only to find out that I need to "mold" myself after the material 😅 Oh well, it's not the end of the world of course!

@@suzykeene9298 I haven’t tried rice paper for ink and watercolor. The Strathmore sketchbook was challenging enough for me 🤣. I have gotten used to it now and know it’s limitations, but in the beginning I was disappointed and thought I had wasted my money. So I used it for doodles and wasted some pages. However, after painting something small that I was happy with then I realized it’s limitation and paint accordingly.

I recently bought this sketchbook and started to use ink in it and it works amazingly. "Drawing" paper isn't meant to be used with big washes, so I'm not surprised it's buckling and blooming with them. If you maybe come back to this sketchbook, try ink or try to create something that utilises the blooms to your advantage (they look fantastic with foliage, flowers and trees for example). However, I look forward to your next videos, no matter which sketchbook you use!

I love these sketchbooks😂. It’s partly about personal taste and partly the way you use it. Also- I think the brushes you use will play a part in satisfaction. It’s cellulose paper and I’d consider it mixed media. When I use it I really control my water- or there will be blooms. I also don’t expect to layer a lot- I’m sure the paper would eventually pill. I paint more directly when I use this or my Stillman and birn sketchbooks. I adjust my expectations in all sketchbooks (except my koval - but that has Fabriano artistic paper and costs 3xs what my a4 Venezia costs). I think you are right about gouache being nice in this (I haven’t tried yet). I’m sorry you feel disappointed- that’s the worst. But maybe you can come back to it for experiments and studies. Which cellulose sketchbooks have worked for you?

@PaintinHiding yeah while strathmore500 is 100% cotton it is very hard pressed, has smooth hot pressed surface and the paint doesn't really flow all that well on it at all! If you decide to pick it up again, maybe try water-soluble media in stick form. Do you have any Inktense, watercolor pencils, or Neocolor II?
