A hiatus hernia, also known as a hiatal hernia, is a medical condition where a portion of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. The diaphragm is a muscular sheet that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and plays a crucial role in breathing.
There are two main types of hiatus hernias:
Sliding Hiatus Hernia: This is the most common type and occurs when the junction between the esophagus and stomach, known as the gastroesophageal junction, and a portion of the stomach slide up through the diaphragm into the chest.
Paraesophageal Hiatus Hernia: In this type, a part of the stomach squeezes through the diaphragm next to the esophagus, but the gastroesophageal junction remains in its normal position.
Hiatus hernias are often associated with symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), and sometimes, respiratory issues like coughing and shortness of breath. However, not everyone with a hiatus hernia experiences symptoms, and it may be incidentally discovered during medical examinations for unrelated issues.
The exact cause of hiatus hernia is not always clear, but it is believed to result from a combination of factors, including age, obesity, pregnancy, and increased pressure on the abdominal cavity due to factors such as heavy lifting, straining during bowel movements, or persistent coughing.
Diagnosis of hiatus hernia is typically made through various imaging studies, such as X-rays, barium swallow studies, or endoscopy.
Treatment for a hiatus hernia depends on the severity of symptoms and the type of hernia. Mild cases may be managed with lifestyle changes and medications to control acid reflux. Lifestyle modifications may include weight loss, avoiding large meals, not lying down after eating, and avoiding trigger foods like spicy and acidic items. Medications such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors, or H2 blockers can help reduce acid production and alleviate symptoms.
In more severe cases or when complications arise, surgical intervention may be considered to repair the hernia and strengthen the diaphragm.
As always, if you suspect you have a hiatus hernia or are experiencing symptoms related to it, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
