  • It is commonly asserted that crucifixion is an asphyxial death. This claim can be found in modern medical literature and forensic textbooks, as well as heard in countless sermons. However, the asphyxia hypothesis lacks foundation. Here we visit the evidence, claims, and theories. Sources ranging from antiquarian books, internet posts, scholarly medical articles, and archeological evidence are considered. There is more that could be addressed which this presentation does not address, in order to keep it under an hour. The Alexamenos graffito, the Greek text of the crucifixion narratives in the Gospels, other ancient textual sources, and even topics such as soil and wood in the ancient near east could all factor into an even fuller discussion of Roman crucifixion practices.

Does “Stauros”, (Greek Koine) term from which Jerome translated into Latin the word “Crux” actually means a double crossed stakes?

Men sure spent a lot of energy thinking up horrible methods of torture and murder over the centuries.

I lean towards the demonic spirits in the man that does the this form of thinking it is afterall a big part of Jesus’ ministry casting out demons

The crucifixion and resurrection is the most important event in history. By his strips we are healed. Those who give their life to Jesus Christ will have eternal life. The crucifixion represents dying to self so that Gods Holy Spirit may live in you.
The human body makes a cross when a man stands erect in prayer with arms outstretched.

I worked in a maximum security prison. That still does executions. The cause of death is literally listed as Homicide by State. It is what it is. So yes , I believe technically I believe that would also be a homicide.

Theologian here. I appreciate this video and will definitely take this into consideration. I have taught the death by asphyxiation claim at sunday school, but truly have not thought about it like this.
Also for your consideration as to what the crucifix looked like, two important pieces of archaeology that feature the crucifix. These are connected to Jesus too.

I appreciate your thoughts and insights being a forensic pathologist, really informative watch. Would love to hear Dan Mclellans thoughts on the information relating to Jesus and his own studies on the matter.
