I acually think this could be a great item for those that want an nearly all-in-one solution. Pair this thing with say like an Andover Spinbase, and you have a one stop shop for all things music in your home.

I received this turntable this past week as a gift. The timing of your review was perfect! I have it connected to a Marantz SR-4001 driving a pair of Ohm Walsh 2’s and a Klipsch RW-10D subwoofer. I haven’t been able to spend a lot time with it yet, but so far I’m impressed. I’m uncertain if I’ll invest in an MusicCast speakers yet. I was able to connect the turntable to a UE boom via Bluetooth to listen to an album on the patio. I thought that was pretty cool!
I really enjoy your channel! I’m getting ready to invest in a bigger TV and eventually a new receiver. Your reviews are the best I’ve found for someone who is looking to make an investment in home theater or audio.

I found that the most effective ways to get good sound from a lifestyle TT is through using an elliptical stylus and a separate phono-stage. These two things improved the sound on my Sony LX-300USB tenfold.
The golden rule with Hi-Fi equipment is that the more features a product has, the more the product creates vibration and degrades the sound. This is particularly true with turntables which is why the more audiophile focused ones have as few features as possible.
I use a pair of vintage speakers (Castle Acoustics Richmond from February 1974) with a mid-90s amplifier (NAD 310) and I'm able to get streaming services (and a lot more) by having the TV hooked up to the amplifier through the RCA-Out port. I'm able to get music from a Blu-Ray player, a satellite TV receiver, a laptop and pretty much anything that connects through HDMI and it only takes one input slot on the amplifier.

Actually bought the Yamaha turntable. I agree at 700 dollar retail it’s best left on the shelf. I got mine at 495. Cartridge must be upgraded, onboard phono preamp works nothing to write home about, extra headshell impossible to find, can’t use available overhang gauges for cart setup. The thin platter rings, fixed with rubber platter mat. With rubber platter mat to dampen platter, nude stylus/cartridge it plays about as well as any turntable I have under 1000 dollar but that’s with over 200 dollar In upgrades. The music cast is cool. If I wasn’t a Yamaha fanboy, I’d probably pass on it even at 500 dollar.

Very interesting idea. I can see someone using this who wants to have a foot in the modern era, but maintain a certain minimalist look to their system. It would have been even more impressive if Yamaha made their streaming output route through the phono level output. That would have actually preserved an input on a vintage receiver, and also been great for pranking your friends about the latest "record" you just picked up...

Considering this as a part of a multiroom setup, as I could then play those records in any room of the house if I would build the multiroom audio system around the musiccast platform. What are your thoughts on the Yamaha multiroom system and the Yamaha WXA-50 streaming amp to connect other rooms?

Here we are in 2020, still talking and listening to vinyls and turntables 😂. Honestly I think it's cool some of this retro tech is coming back with a bit of modernization. About 4 years ago I seen one at Walmart and was like "WUUUUT" followed by about 30 seconds of me like "I can't believe these are coming back, COOOL"

I personally like to have as many things separate as possible, for the reason if one dies, you can replace just that one component. Also I find something gorgeous about a full stack of matching components (working on my marantz stack over time). But, thats just how I am. Some people like a minimalist approach, and this would definitely appeal to them, add a yamaha MCR-N560BL, and you have all your music bases covered, and looking sleek. Some people are not audiophiles, a certain headphone brand has proven that, some, just enjoy the music.

Interesting product. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
Regarding the Line Out and Phono Out quibble you have.
Maybe this is Yamaha acknowledging that although this turntable will still operate in 20 - 30 years from now it's not intending to support the music streaming function with updates for longer than a decade.
    Or maybe not?

The best thing about this review is Andrew's opinion about the cartridge, because the AT 3600L is extremely cheap (10$ on Ebay) and I use it everytime when I refurbish an old turntable. Amazing quality for the price. Stylus can be upgraded also. May be a good option if you purchase this turntable rather than buy a new 100$ cartridge. Great video ! Thank you Andrew !

What type of stylus fits on that one? AT91R?
I use the AT3600L on crappy mono records, conical styli work well on those.
But IMO, the ATVM95E is much better value for money (~40 bucks), much less sibilant, harsh but more clarity.

Hi Andrew, I have just Oder one of these, not sure if I have done the right thing, I purchased another model quite a bit cheaper found it auto stop didn’t stop when it was supposed to stop before the end of the record/music is playing and I found the speed was incorrect it was turning to fast so I took it back to the shop where I purchased it from this is in France for him to say that they do not give refunds which I thought was very strange but did offer me to purchase a different model so I went for this one instead of yet to pick it up hopefully Tuesday Wednesday of next week, I do have another record deck Linn LP 12 dated back from the early 80s the problem with it the motor and the electronics has packed up and I have been quoted €1700 roughly for it to be repaired but the present that is out of my price range this is the reason why I went out and purchased another record deck, some what Very cheap as compared with Linn. At least hopefully I’ll be able to pay my music not sure about the streaming part of it, As I am an old dude not into electronics as such but I do like listening to my music,
I have a very large pair of transmission line loudspeaker cabinets that I built back in the late 70s early 80s I just recently put a new driver here and it’s in them and they have changed completely, SEAS DRIVERS Units, 150w ,
I have listened and watched quite a lot of your tutorials on equipment and all sounds very interesting you do a great job keep up the great work I know this is from a few years ago so we probably will not read this never mind.

I’m just not a fan of all the integrated parts. I like to keep lots of different speakers for a long time.
If I have a solid set but the amount goes out I have to hope the manufacturer will still be supporting the speaker.
The original Sonos are no longer supported and Mu best friend has 20k worth of them throughout his house.
It’s just a losing investment in my mind.

Seems strange to me that this product didn't have some sort of auto-switching between 'Out' and 'Phono Out.' The fact that you have to manually switch it, AND that said switch isn't easily accessible on the front confounds me. It seems obvious to me that when you switch the source to phono, it automatically outputs at that output. If you need to have everything output via the main out, you could have a setting that disables the switching. Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

    • @yungfleip
      @yungfleip 3 роки тому

Totally what I was thinking. Have the streaming portion always use the line out, but the switch on the back is for the record portion. So if you have a phono pre-amp that you like you can use that without having to use the switch outputs when you switch sources.

  • @EricMischel
    @EricMischel 3 роки тому

Wouldn't it be cool if it would rip your vinyl and make it available to stream afterwards. Just pick your format, storage location and let the streaming app pull in the artwork, track list and metadata (just need a bit of Shazam) and a prompt to confirm...or imagine just using Google Image search to identify the album...just sayin' ;-)

Hmmmm... interesting product....there is a market I think but I`m not sure its going to be a big seller, but as you say Andrew, if someone has some vintage amplifier or receiver this may well be the ticket. I personally would not have a streamer built into a turntable, but thats just me being a fussy old hifi queen :o) thought the review was extremely well balanced as always

Nice turntable but would go with the Fluance over this. Streaming from a turntable is none use case for me. Kudos to those who could use it, but the options are all over. Sure I like the old Turntables, but it needs to be right. New turntables have a warranty and needs no worry. If you tinker like me, than you can buy what you like. $599.00 is spendy for most of my friends, but others maybe just right. I like this turntable, but not the I must have based on my music playback case. No room, don't need another collection. I am happy with Tape and Digital. Done.

i can't believe this can't stream TO airplay or the google equivalent (as an option). as a home user with a bunch of airplay capable gear, given this has wifi/ethernet and obviously a computer with a DAC inside of it - adding ability to stream output to something seems like a no brainer (control via the app) to me?
I think Yamaha have totally missed a niche there - customers who have a bunch of old or inherited vinyl that they want to play through their existing modern setup. in terms of cost to add via software.... probably minimal and possible via a firmware update.
what's more... looking around, haven't been able to find a generic line-in -> airplay device other than using a Mac or PC yet either. Which seems overkill....

I wouldn't by a streaming turntable. Its bastardization of the delivery source. It's like using ocean water from New York's Gawanas canal (which btw, is deadly toxic) as dipping sauce! Politely disgusting, "..dirtier than a hotel mattress." Love the analogy and visual!

I'm not convinced that those of us with vintage amps or receivers are desperately short of inputs, Andrew. They all have a tape I/O at a bare minimum, often two, and anything above entry-level has an aux in. Amps also have a tuner input which, if you're streaming, is redundant and can be repurposed. A streaming turntable seems to me to be a mismatch.
As for modern vs. vintage turntables, the wow & flutter figures tell a story. At 0.2%, this Yamaha can't hold a candle to their old P-220's score of 0.04%. Even my humble little Panasonic SL-H350 delivers 0.045%. Today's motors are, as we say in the UK, pants!

A lot if, yes. Besides build quality, the cartridge and the inclusion of a pre-amp most heavily influence any turntable. This one is unique since it has features that goes well beyond any typical turntable.

My only problem with turn tables is, never liked them and when they were the only show, there were no choices for me: don't like 'em; never did and am ecstatic with CDs, streams, server streaming amps, internet compatible amps, preamps, Sirius, Pandora, etc. ...
If I still had my turntable, I'd send it to you but you can't have it 'cause I burned it when I bought two SONY 300 disc interconnected CD players, a Marantz amp, and 4 JBL Studios ...
