People guilty of adultery were once given a letter "A" to wear. The letterman gave out those letters. This was a genuine law that existed two centuries before being referenced in the novel "The Scarlet Letter" that everyone will falsely claim to be the origin of the concept (The choice of scarlet was clearly a nod to the novel though, the law itself didn't specify scarlet: "Every Person and Persons so Offending, shall for ever after wear a Capital A of two Inches long and proportionable bigness, cut out in Cloath of a contrary Colour to their Cloaths, and Sewed upon their upper Garments, on the out-side of their Arm, or on their Back, in open view". Being "Unable to forgive your scarlet letterman" is to hold a grudge against those who have exposed your weaknesses/failings, rather than to accept and learn, in order to maintain the ego.
Is that true about the person handing out the letter? I've always interpreted the scarlet letterman to be the "varsity adulterer" of whom the song/grudge originated from. One of my favorite Maynard lyrics easily.
@@jaymecarlson8685 The scarlet letter I think originates from the Hawthorne book. Technically Hester ought to have been stoned to death, or otherwise executed, but because she was pregnant the community was merciful and forced her to wear the letter instead.
@@psukebariah3435 It does for sure, but I was always assuming the letterMAN aspect of the lyric was a combination of that and a varsity letterman in the high school athletic sense which together would mean something akin to a accomplished cheater, or a serial cheater. The band has done this dual name combo thing before with Aenima and Pushit being the first to pop to mind. I had not known of this "person who gave out the letter" meaning before now which throws my idea into question.
@@jaymecarlson8685 Maynard (and Tool) do indeed do combo meanings in their song titles. I was speaking more specifically to the idea that a scarlet letter was "often" given out for adultery. What was "often" given out for adultery was death. The "scarlet letter" was an anomaly.
And I believe "give away the stone" is self-referential towards the cornerstone line, but also another play on words about atlas holding the stone. Most of the lyrics in this and The Pot are satirical twists of different sayings.
“Clutch it like a cornerstone” = holding that grudge. Saturn’s orbital period is 29 years, don’t let it take you that long to let that grudge go. “Saturn comes back around, lifts you up like a child or drags you down like a stone” “Give away the stone, let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold”
I just turned 29 years old…. And hearing this song and the stuff I’ve been thinking about in my head about my career and how I’ve been contemplating and procrastinating and putting off the thing so want to do in my life or the things I started years ago and never finished … it couldn’t be a more perfect timing to listen to this

The greatest thing about Tool is how the music makes you feel. You don't even have to understand the lyrics to let your soul feel the message they want to convey. Looking forward to Descending!
I agree, I like to think of the instruments being used like a voice, and it some songs they literally almost sound like singing. It's one of my favorite bits about this band
@@afroize very true. Their genius instrumentation for example can be found in 7empest. If you take just the instruments it sounds just like a coming storm, the actual tempest, and then the aftermath.
Tool's lyrics are genius in that although they are usually written about a specific thing from a specific point of view they are almost always applicable to anyone's situation and everyone can find a different, just as valid meaning in them.
Saturn takes about 30 years to fully rotate around the sun. In simbolysm, 30 years means "maturing". When he says "saturn comes back around to show you everything", it's like "it's been 30 years and you're still holding that grudge, maturity comes to shed new light on old grudges" "saturn ascends, choose 1 or 10" (choose change or be the same you've ever been) that's how I get it, at least.

Keep 'em comin'! Vicariously reliving my initial Tool experiences through your channel has been a thrill and exercise in enlightenment. And when you're emotionally ready, Prison Sex. I'd wait awhile before Wings For Marie 1&2 (off 10,000 Days), that takes emotional fortitude to work-through. If they tour in your region, make it a point to go
I scrolled through your stuff pretty far l but can you tell me if you have listened to the other band Maynard (tool) did for a few years, A Perfect Circle. 2000 Mer de Noms (Judith- his mom) (3 Libras) 2003 Thirteenth Step (The Noose) Very popular to reactors so disregard if you've already done them. Have a safe and fun trip!!!
Maynard's traditional use of sarcasm within his lyrics- "Clutch IT (grudge) like a cornerstone" .. as tho it's a good thing .. "Otherwise it all comes down" .. don't want that to happen!! (might uncover iniquity) His way of almost challenging one to test their righteous indignation of conceived wrongs, and their steadfast implacability. WEAR THE GRUDGE LIKE A CROWN (good?).... OF NEGATIVITY (nope, bad) "Unable to forgive" .. (Easier than dealing with it or the person in question who you're mad at anyway! It's their fault!) "Terrified of being wrong" He knows human nature and pinpoints how one gets stuck in these non functional situations AND why they would stay in them!!! There may be some more profound reason for the Saturn stuff lol, regardless of that, it's mention is clearly a way of saying Hey! Life is a moving cycle of new dawns, planetary rotations, etc which means it's NEVER too late or too set in concrete to make changes that will benefit. These "chances" for positive changes come along and you will either let it go OR stubbornly sink deeper into your self righteous indignation. "TERRIFIED" OF BEING WRONG... is what he says, and that's no joke
The long yell, let go, and intensity of the end of the song seems to me to symbolize the long awaited release of all the anger. Maybe not directed at someone but more in an introspective way, like realizing what it is and coming to terms with the fact that it's weighing you down, then finally letting it pass on.
Hi!!!! I just want to mention that Maynard is absolutely an atheis. He has nothing but contempt for Christianity, mainstream religions, gaudy corrupt churches, etc. That said, it is why he uses astrology, astronomy, paganism, mother naturism, etc. Because they are value and belief systems that exist separately and independently from all aforementioned schemes. Just heard you say something about his having to believe in God somewhat because he believes in astrology. Nope That's all. Thanks for your open mind, your great song choices, and your honest questions.
Appreciate this so much!! Yeah I think you're right. And it's reassuring that no matter what we believe in, we can tap into something powerful beyond ourselves
The grudge might be my favorite tool song. Most of the music I listen to is more on the heavy side, so this is the shit that speaks to me, more than the softer songs (theyre still great tho)
here is what i know about tool ,and where they stand with religion....danny and adam ,specially danny are in ocultism.into sacred geometry, danny whole life was into it,cos his father was a mason.manyard is the one who is the least in it.
I say tool lyrics is the best compared to the rest of all bands, it’s good it’s deep But... it’s tool’s music that is incomparable n there are no words to explain. It’s not just music it’s something beyond... i listen to tool in awe how did those bands members made, bring out such a thing! 🤷♂️
You are absolutely killing these reactions...you get it! We gave all felt it. It gets better and better my friend...enjoy this journey. And just wait. The singer Maynard has 2 other amazing bands that will blow your damn mind as well🤘🤣
The cornerstone to me was always the grudge you are holding onto so tightly, that you build the building of hate/negativity around if you continue to clutch it. I think he then goes on to tell you to let it go before it drags you down into the abyss. But you can only let it go if you Choose to. You have to choose to let go of your grudges for them to lose their weight and let you resurface before you drown in a sea of hate and discontent. This Journey we listen to Maynard go through on these albums is amazing. So much hate for religion and others, to finally transforming into acceptance and retrospection is phenomenal.
I love what you do bro as a fellow Christian you are a great example to me you put me at ease for reasons I will not get into but just thank you for doing what you do and being here It helps and ways you'll never know
This is the opening song on Lateralus. Kinda sets it all up. You really need to listen to that whole album. Its all deep ass shit with some ridiculously good music
Been a tool fan forever saw them at MSG in 2001. They will always be my favorite group, even if I don’t listen to them for a while, their songs are timeless and I always go back. Maynard is a genius.
I saw them only once live, on mushrooms. That was amazing. It was just after this album was released, early 2000s. They probably played this song as well altough I do not recall which songs they played, I was just spacing out and dancing like a maniac the whole time. Pretty sure I was the happiest person in that entire audiance.
I’m sure it’s been mentioned ad nauseum but I just want to get my vote in for Invincible off the new album which Descending is off of also. Enjoy the trip. Wish I could hear Tool again for the first time.
Ah the ol’ trick baby… where baby #1 makes you feel like you’re a pro, so how hard could 2 be? Our first was a very easy baby, so when we found out we were having a 2nd we thought for sure we just lucked out big time with baby #1. Turns out… the 2nd may even be easier (so far… almost 7 months).
This was one of the next songs that I wanted to recommend! So glad you got to it, this, in my humble opinion, is a big stepping stone of growth. Saturn comes back around = 30 years passing. I am about to turn 30 and the idea of letting go of my past self to be the person I need to be moving forward has been weighing heavily on me. Our baby deserves the best version of ourselves!
Saturn was also the God of war so has a lot to do with wrath and anger. Also, Clutching like a cornerstone to me means that your entire foundation of reality is based on this grudge you hold so tight that if you let it go everything will 'all come down'
I'm not a trained astrologer by any stretch, but I find the Saturn transit fascinating from a Jungian individiutian perspective, so I've delved into it a bit, and I think that's also why Maynard is using it as well. Astrologically, Saturn returns (comes back around) to it's position in your natal chart every 26-ish years. Being such a slow moving planet (I think it's the last "personal planet", the rest are "generational"), it's effects can be felt for an extended period both before and after. And it can be *hardcore*. Saturn is the planet of rules, boundaries and endings...and can and will f up your life. If you are holding on to the wrong things - how you think your life "should" be, even if it's really not. Marriages/long term relationships can end, job loss, housing lost...and llegar kinds of hellish scenarios, including severe illness. All to get you to let go. And continued holding on can wreck you. Letting go and heading in a more...authentic? direction, even if it wasn't where you thought you were headed, or what you thought you wanted, can bring some excellent advantages. That's the mythology, anyway. And having gone through a pagan phase and a spiritual astrology phase, I've read some powerful personal accounts. I recommend looking into it. So that's my...$.10. Enjoying your reactions to Tool.
Saturn is also the Romanization of the Greek god chronos who obviously is closely associated with time. Chronological, chronic illness, anachronistic, etc.
Disposition, reflection, triad. With lyrics for reflection. Think you will appreciate the message. Also as a father you might enjoy Invincible. Since you mentioned masonic brothers, the metaphor for alchemy of turning lead to gold should not be taken literally as solid materials, but figuratively for your mind/body/spirit. If you make your anger/grudge your cornerstone you will never rise from your base existence, if you are still doing so once Saturn comes back around 29 years later, what a waste. Enjoying your Tool reviews, especially that you can appreciate the music while comprehending the layers in the lyrics. Enjoy your family holiday.
Glad you’re going to a show. It will be so much more than you even realize right now. Loving that for you. Check out Pneuma on FI for your spiral ride. Danny has a great video up of the performance.
Most Tool fans know "the scream". Its my favorite part of showing this song to someone. That moment of "Did he just scream for 30 seconds?!". Yes. Yes, he did. And mind you, this is the first song on the album. It only gets more intense from there. I would agree with most saying to give 'Invincible' a lesson. Its one of my favorites off the new album.
calmly awaits the reaction to "Eulogy" and may as well do "ticks and leeches" too. and yes, he can scream that long and sound that damn good. saw him do it live a few times.
Definitely recommend you familiarize yourself with stinkfist and vicarious. Two songs they always play live. Very good lyrical topics also. As far as a song that are a journey I recommend “Pushit” studio version first than the salival version second… maybe even in the same video (long cardio session) and also “the patient” is a song with a really good message to motivate you when one feels like giving up. There really are no bad songs. I would just recommmend those…… also “eulogy”, “ third eye” (heaviest song they have imo), and “H” all very good. Have a great trip with the family!

(The Noose)
Very popular to reactors so disregard if you've already done them.
Have a safe and fun trip!!!
Maynard's traditional use of sarcasm within his lyrics-
"Clutch IT (grudge) like a cornerstone" .. as tho it's a good thing ..
"Otherwise it all comes down" .. don't want that to happen!! (might uncover iniquity)
His way of almost challenging one to test their righteous indignation of conceived wrongs, and their steadfast implacability.
WEAR THE GRUDGE LIKE A CROWN (good?).... OF NEGATIVITY (nope, bad)
"Unable to forgive" ..
(Easier than dealing with it or the person in question who you're mad at anyway! It's their fault!)
"Terrified of being wrong" He knows human nature and pinpoints how one gets stuck in these non functional situations AND why they would stay in them!!!
There may be some more profound reason for the Saturn stuff lol, regardless of that, it's mention is clearly a way of saying Hey! Life is a moving cycle of new dawns, planetary rotations, etc
which means it's NEVER too late or too set in concrete to make changes that will benefit.
Nope
That's all. Thanks for your open mind, your great song choices, and your honest questions.
Appreciate this so much!! Yeah I think you're right. And it's reassuring that no matter what we believe in, we can tap into something powerful beyond ourselves
Check out Jordan Peterson on your own time, he can help strengthen your male mind🇨🇦✌️
I say tool lyrics is the best compared to the rest of all bands, it’s good it’s deep
But... it’s tool’s music that is incomparable n there are no words to explain. It’s not just music it’s something beyond... i listen to tool in awe how did those bands members made, bring out such a thing! 🤷♂️
'that hit me like a truck'
As the build up to the scream happens 😎
Love watching this journey...
I heard this song live, it’s just so amazing!!! Yes get to see TOOL live as soon as possible 🤘🏼
Ohhh I’m looking forward to this one. The only band that can open with a song that would close most albums.
They’ve opened with this song live on most of the Tool shows I’ve been able to attend
@@andrewj3398 they haven’t on this current tour. They don’t play it at all unfortunately. Maybe this redo round will include it.
Maynard's voice is truly hypnotizing! Of course other awesome song!🌹
BTW, this is the only band I have had to research on what the hell is going on... made me fall in love with them. Maynard is my Prometheus.
Every time I get into the gym, this is the first song on my playlist. The energy I get from it is amazing. One of my favourite Tool songs.
Yeah, Descending and 7empest and Invincible
@@jakefromstatefarm1405 7empest. 7empest.
You need some reflection paired with Disposition and Triad Tool’s Holy Trinity
Reflection is magical!
Don't forget the Lima beans
"That hit me like a truck". Little did he know another truck was coming...
Lol. From an S-10 to a long nosed Pete.
"OK, that hit me like a truck"
Just wait until you see what hits you about 10 seconds from now!
Slowly becoming my favorite TOOL reactor. Jambi! Jambi! Jambi!
Epic reactions man! You should definetly watch Third Eye 1998 live version, insane performance, will blow your mind for sure.

Your reactions are so genuine. Thank you for that ❤️🌀🤘
Have a great holiday can’t wait to see your reaction to more Tool 😉🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶💜
You're ready for Third Eye (live), also check out H and Jimmy
To me it means that holding onto a grudge, and focusing on the negative will blind you to the potential and the positive.
calmly awaits the reaction to "Eulogy" and may as well do "ticks and leeches" too.
and yes, he can scream that long and sound that damn good. saw him do it live a few times.
