- My buddy @FISHERYIN hooked me up with a 9" Berkley Nessie last week to test out. I saw this bait at iCast and was really looking forward to getting my hands on one. Though this bait has stirred up a bit of controversy, I gotta say for the short time I was able to fish it....I like what I saw. Let me know what you think down below.

Definitely going to be a player for intro glides / swim-baits especially the 5 and 7 inch. 100% going to pick one up for myself just to see if it’s better than a normal glide.
I think they’ll both have their place. Skipping docks is going to be sick with the soft glide.
@@SBFishingI doubt the Flag will be produced anymore. It's a hot bait, but unless you're into collecting, a professional that requires the minute difference in action, or just have money to burn, nobody is going to pay what will soon be considered "extra" for that action and configuration of a swimbait/glidebait.
There simply aren't enough collectors, pros, or wealthy people, in the large swimbait market. That's the problem. If it was something a majority of the bass fishing market consumed, like the chatterbait being in the swim jig category, I can see how Grow Design Works could retain some reasonable amount of market share to stay afloat, internationally at least. But whoever came up with the design and originally invested in it will probably never have another opportunity to produce another game changing design. Why would they? Berkley never even gave them credit where it is really due.
We all know reputation establishes a person or company in the sportfishing industry. It doesn't cost anything monetarily to just give credit to the people they're benefiting from. It only sours the reputation of those that refuse, especially after the current controversy only confirms a previously questionable bad reputation.
Berkley will profit, no doubt. But everyone else loses from the loss of competition and innovation.

Just bought one and your review and a few others make me feel good. It’s very likely you got bit by a gar or something with teeth. My thoughts is that it imitated a baitfish well enough to lure in a big fish.

Idk man I like your videos and what you do, but I just can't get behind Berkely period. Everything they make is a knock off of someone else's hard work and idea. It's not just the Nessie it's the choppo, the Gillie, the general the list goes on and on. Support small businesses not corporate whores who are lazy and make money off of other people's product just cuz they have money and can mass produce it for cheap.

On another note - what makes the concept of a soft glide (regardless of brand) a gimmick? I know for a fact you'll be able to get a soft glide into spots you'll never get a standard glide. Idk, they have always been something of interest once I started fishing glides more.

Just for laughs I bought one of these at the outdoor shop today and I ran out to my local lake and tossed it around, it's still early up here for bass fishing I feel but I thought the lure felt great and had great action, can't wait to see if a giant pike takes it this weekend

My fishing buddy bought a new hi dollar lure. First cast and snap! It was loud and gone. We walked around the lake and it was a windy day and I found a brand new lure. It was his. Lol. I got the first, most and biggest for the day. He caught a handful.

I honestly couldn’t get the 7” to swim well at all. I had to put nail weights in the 9, but got it dialed.

According to the Virginia DNR, they stock musky into that Lake. That's probably what bit you off.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think DNR would stock musky in this lake. Doesn’t seem favorable for the fish. Again, could be wrong.

The hook set looked a little aggressive to me, but we can't act like we were there with you. Seems like you had a bad spot on your line that made it weak. There is no way 25lb broke that easily unless your knot broke or you had a nick in line. Thanks for showing the little bit of fishing you did with it.
My opinion is that the vast majority of lures are a copy of some other brand, it is what it is. To me it looks as if it is close but did have different build construction. I'd buy the Berkley at $13 before spending $80 on the other.

I think the controversy surrounding this bait is stupid. We aren't out there complaining about the multitude of options out there for regular glide baits, crankbaits, or jerkbaits. Berkeley is bringing the soft glidebait here to the US market in an affordable version with the production power (that Grow Design Works lacks) for many more poeple to have the opportunity to throw it.
Even if it’s a knock off from a jdm bait but it’s a fraction of the cost plus more easily obtained then it’s a win for me.
My biggest problem with the Nessie is the hook up ratio is 0 for smallies Espically. Wish it had a back hook as week or a line through. But can’t complain for 13 bucks. Also snook/ tarpon demolish those fucking things. Have caught musky on them as well

Honestly, the "drama" is pretty ridiculous. They're in different galaxies as far as price and they're mimicking bait fish... Obviously lures will look similar, unless one company can patent a certain fish presentation. $90 for a soft plastic glide is also bordering criminal lol
That's why you don't LOCK down the drag... if you set the hook and the drag doesn't slip a little at the end its too tight.

It’s called being innovative, but there should be a mutual respect somewhere. Lure product is always changing, but the idea came somewhere first. Giving kudos to original folks in Japan and fish on! Anyways, I hope you do another video please, it’s redemption time

Controversial bait sure, but honestly it’s still a great bait. Berkley could definitely be a little more innovative but at the end of the day it’s a business and they’re here to make money and they sell baits. I use ally of berkley and i honestly can’t complain the cull shad I like better than a magdraft you can fish it a little faster

Controversial opinion: Flurocarbon is the worst line ever made! I only use mono for subsurface baits and can count on my hand how many times ive broken off in 10+ years of bass fishing. Fluro is brittle and breaks way too easily. Probably a pike in your case but i just see fluro break wayy to often. Milliken breaks off a lot using fluro.

Fluoro needs to be changed out almost weekly...there's not a controlled stretch with fluoro, so every time it stretches, it weakens...pros use it, as they feel it's more invisible & sensitivity...When it's free, u can do that & have time with no job...in reality, bass couldn't care less about seeing the line...hence, giant treble hooks on swim/glides, wires all over an A rig, etc...many others...big swim/glides, rats, all hard baits...I'm 100% mono & change to fresh line about 3x/year

No controversy due to the fact the fact that the only similarity between the Nessie and the Grow Works is the shape! Different tail fin, different plastic, Nessie has har plastic keel fins and a hook clip, Grow Works doesn’t! Also, plastic glide baits have been around ( mostly in Japan ) for 10 years! Hopefully this clears up and thought that Ike and Berkley copied or ripped off Grow Works… they simply saw a great bait, redesigned it, and filled a gap in the American market! This has been happening in the fishing industry since day one!

TBH there is no honour in fishing companies, I developed a very unique drop shot bait when drop shot was new , got coppied really fast , everything good gets ripped off.
It’s a total knockoff. Berkeley in particular has a history of ripping off jdm lures.
That being said there aren’t many original designs in fishing anymore, look how many senko knock offs there are

Instead of dropping a little money to do at least do a video on the original Flag 170 first, you chose to make a video and support Berkley's knockoff. @@SBFishing If you did your homework, you'd know that Megabass actually had the Twitcher in development before GDW released theirs. The actual origins of that design is only known to those two companies. And honestly, yes, it would have been better than making a vid with Berkley's. Thats why you dont set the hook really hard im a bass fisherman i also fish for catfish but i seen tons of bass fisherman either break their line on a big fish or break there rod i swear people need to learn how to fish better
Also always set your drag around the middle not too loose or tight so you can set the hook without so much resistance

I hate the idea that Berkley did not credit the design, and pass it as an original R&D design at icast. Spro and KGB did it right, Berkley has the resources to do it right and choose not to. As a consumer I can understand the thought about price to availability, but as a creator this is very disrespectful and unprofessional. change the item to fishing content and a small creator's unique content being stolen/copied, by a larger media company/influencer with no credit as it sky rockets in exposure and popularity.
Spro also knocked off the coverscat pretty hard at the same time.

The quick glimpse I had of the two looks as Berkley copied the Japanese bait with a few modifications at the nose and tail. But hey it's done all the time Right !!

The prob is Grow is a small company and they could not and still can not provide any product. On back order (or very small runs) for over a year. People that had them sold them at ridiculous prices. This is common in the handmade swimbait world. That's why KGB hooked up with Spro who could mass produce their very desirable Chad Shad with good quality and much cheaper price. Maybe Berkley tried to do a collaboration with Grow and they declined. Who knows. If that is the case it is Grow's loss. I have no prob with what Berkley did, and although this bait is kinda inique, as far as I'm concerned, most of these swimbaits look so similar anyway.
