    It’s amazing how hard these people worked day in day out to make a living in the Appalachian mountains. The stories my family told me will forever be my strength, knowing I could never match their tenacity, their strength, their love of family. My own mother’s second child died in her arms of measles outbreak around 1922 or 1923. My sister told me stories of her childhood too. My father left the mountains in 1936 with five children in the back of stake truck for Michigan (where I was born) for a better life where a paying job could help them survive. These people were strong, good people. I’m forever grateful for them where the benefits of that brave move made my life much easier. 💖🌻

    Hi JD! How sad and an ending I didn’t expect. The children really breaks my heart.
    I know my grandfather was a dynamite man in the Kentucky coal mines. I was told when I would go to my grandparents house and my grandfather was not there, but told he was working. I never remember my grandfather ever speaking of the months he spent in the coal mines or anything about what happened.

    Some of the women listening to this wonderful story, can relate to Sara's feelings of relief following the news of husbands death!!! Freedom!!!

    • @debrajones4010
      @debrajones4010 6 місяців тому

      But to me it seemed that she had a very loving husband. I mean how many men would’ve cared about their wife’s health? She never spoke of him beating her or talking to her like trash? He provided for his family and was working towards getting his children new shoes. Most women would kill to have that type of marriage, at least in those days they would. Maybe I missed something but that’s the type of husband I would’ve wanted back then.

    Mark Twain words & music. Your voice, especially in the beginning and narrative style, reminded me of it. If you’ve not listened, it’s so well done and has many famous musicians. This video is so well done! I’ve subscribed to your channe. Live in western NC in smokies. It’s sure changed a lot. Kind of sad. I quilt and love to listen to things like this.

    As always such a great story. I'm curious if the part about Sarah was based on what other women said they felt when they became widows, a mix of sadness & excitement for the freedom that came from it.

    • @TheAppalachianStoryteller

      I can only speak as a man, but if I were a betting man I would guess that many women feel this. Now days, it's a 50/50 chance every first time marriage in America will end in divorce, second and third marriages are 70% chance of divorce. Then you factor in how many folks stay in unhappy marriages because there is no way out. Back then, a mountain woman had no options but to depend on their man. Most women were probably happy, however, like I said, I have no way of really knowing. But as I wrote Sarahs story and tried to see the world thru her eyes, I could see her desperate longing for independence.
