- Does water work better than penetrating oil for removing rusty nuts and bolts? Also, can water or penetrating oil climb a vertical surface and creep into a rusty nut or bolt? I've had quite a few viewers recommend water over using penetrating oil for removing frozen nuts and bolts. What about diesel? In this video, water, diesel, 3-in-1 oil, Gibbs, Free All, and Mouse Milk compete to see which product is best using 3 separate tests. Something you should try as an electrician I found this works very well for pliers such as Klein pliers and needle nose that are machine pressed rust and become stiff we run them under cold water in the sink as we work them out then take a paper towel and wipe the rust that will come out out of the press points then once it’s all done and dry and loose Then we coded with a lubricant for long lasting but so far just using lubricant does not pull the rest out enough
I'd like to see you test out different rechargeable shop flashlights like streamlight, Milwaukee and some others. I'm a diesel Technician and most people in my shop use streamlights but I've had issues with poor quality batteries only lasting up to 6 months before being crap. I also do a lot of electrical work and the light from a streamlight tends to white out small wires and markings. Mymilwaukee light though made it through an entire deployment with me without issues and while is rated the same lumens, because it uses a softer light it still illuminates the same without causing the glare that the streamlight does. It also seems more robust as well, able to handle typical shop chemicals, drops, etc better.

Some homemade stuff by Chris Fixx works acetone an auto transmission fluid , the fluid can be used.
The results are fixed against water, you have used ten different penetrating oils and only one brand of water

@@benedykt123313 -- Let me clarify. You're right that Linus doesn't hide his sponsorships. I'm not saying he's been intentionally dishonest. My problem is that he's too soft on mediocre products when they're sponsored.
If he thinks "it's poorly executed and I expect better, I would never buy it" then he says "it's not perfect, but it's pretty cool." Meanwhile he has NO problem ripping on Apple products all day long. I've also seen him give conflicting opinions in (almost) back-to-back videos. You can tell that he's holding back trying not to offend the people who send him free stuff. I get why he does it (he doesn't want to get blacklisted), but that means I can't completely trust his reviews.
Compare that to project farm. If a product is mediocre, doesn't live up to its marketing hype, or doesn't justify its pricetage, then PF says "I'm surprised and disappointed in this product. I thought it would have done better given how expensive it is. It underperformed other products that cost half as much. Buy those instead." I don't have to read between the lines or be skeptical. I know PF is telling us exactly what he thinks.

@@PixelatedLlama hand sanitizer gets rid of sap like a champ, so does rubbing alcohol but both damage paint overtime but not as bad as some other chemical cleaners
I always found WD-40 on engine parts as a perfect grease cleaner

@@emeltea33 sometimes the consumer reports are biased by peoples opinions creeping through. Paid reviewers could be another factor.
I use whiskey to get stuck bolts loose . 3 shots generally makes me a bit stronger . If they are really seized I use 6 shots . there's generally one downside , when I'm done breaking them loose , I need a nap . As a side note , everything is better looking the more whiskey I have to use .

@@ProjectFarm Honestly, you should try Whiskey for one of these 'snake oil' tests next time. Not because it is practical but because it would be extremely entertaining and in this example it would lower surface tension and help it climb surfaces. It would likely have done better than water here.

Can you add a test with 2 parts acetone and 1 part hydraulic steering fluid. This should be a true penetrating oil. It gets into everyting, and then the acetone evaporates. leaving a detergent free oil film

Agree. I used this recipe to free a turnover Gooseneck ball from a truck I bought when nothing else would work.
Since you work with oil so much, I’d like to see what cleans it up the best (Dawn, Purple Power, Laundry detergent , etc). And the fact that I spilled motor oil all over my SUV cargo area has nothing to do with it!😧
PS. I ended up throwing the crappy carpet liner out and bought a rubber liner. Some of my toolbags got soaked, though. What I did was soak them overnight in a mixture of Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release, Dawn and Purple Power. Took 3-4 scrubbings to get them back in shape. Watch out for Purple Power cause it has sodium hydroxide in it - which I think is lye. Prob would damage a cotton bag.
I also did a stupid thing by putting the liner in the washing machine. My advice is DONT DO THAT!

We switched from PB Blaster to Liquid Wrench due to the results of your test a while back. We also use SeaFoam Deep Creep for specific applications. Definitely looking forward to the inner in this net round. Restoring old cars means ALWAYS dealing with rusty bolts.

Free All ingredients are similar.
At least as far as a type of oil mixed with a volatile solvent. The alleged mechanism for how the two work is the same.

As a Millwright, I spend about a 1/4 of my work day fighting to remove rusty nuts and bolts. Kroil is the best and only oil we use.

This makes some sense here, I know if you add some dishwashing liquid to water while watering your plants, it does make a real difference. I have to say though, in all my years of fighting rusted nuts and bolts, NEVER have I heard H2o as a penetrant. I've recently been using a 50/50 mix of transmission fluid and Acetone which seems to work fairly well. Have you or anyone else tried that FREEZE stuff that comes in an aerosol can? GM has that nylon garbage holding the u - joints in place as opposed to the c - type clips. I'm wondering if I were to use this method if I could just BUST or Shatter the nylon as opposed to using a torch. Thoughts anyone?

Best I have tried is 50% Acetone and 50% Synthetic Transmission Fluid. works fast, never needed a torch to free rusted bolts.

Yes. Thats my favourite penetrating oil. Works like a charm
Thats the mix i use, 50% Acetone to 50% ATF. Its does a great job in a short amount of time on seized parts.
If your bottle sits awhile it will separate, a good shake gets it mixed again. Also keep it capped, the acetone will evaporate if it can vent out.

There are different types as there are different substrates, application temperatures, operation temperatures.
3M is my favorite
Depends on the surfaces your applying too. Generally to for non-porous surfaces 3M VHB tape works very well.

Your videos are very informative and top notch editing. The most important thing is, you don’t mention any advertiser and that is perfect, unfortunately most UA-cam channels start clamming honesty with viewers , as soon as they start receiving advertisers to support their channel, they forgot the reason why they are making videos, and they focuse on showcasing stuff that advertisers paid them to do and that is shameful, so far I have not found that here in this channel i hope it will stay that way, thanks mate.

I had some input for the penetrating fluid testing. Many times I can break a bolt free, but use penetrating fluid to assist in spinning the nut off. If the entire stud is rusty, threading the nut off the rest of the way can be the hardest part.
It also increases the likelyhood that the stud will snap, as your continually stressing it.
Penetrating fluid can assist in spinning a stubborn nut off. It would be interesting for you to come up with a way to measure how well different fluids assist the nut in spinning off.

I wire brush the exposed threads if they're nasty. No point forcing the nut through it.
@@hughbrackett343 I like to tighten the nut just a hair first too, then wire brush again.
A couple minutes of wire brushing all exposed threads up to and against the nut will usually make that nut spin right off. Most of the time you won't even need a penetrating oil.

I thank him too...sadly a longer rust process makes the data points farther apart with the same product, and it makes me suspect all the torque tests. In the mean time, I think that needs testing.

Not sure what you're cleaning but if you have a nasty battery baking soda and water is KING.i mix it up in a water bottle maybe 1-2 inches of B.S. in the bottle fill with water and shake. poke a hole in the top and soak everything. Keep it agitated it will settle. I rinse and repeat maybe wire brush heavy crud works great on old tractors and dump trucks try to keep your battery tray clean and painted or it will disappear on you!

Living in the rust belt this kind of testing is a gold mine. Thanks again. I want to say, years ago I was in the Volkswagen/ Audi training center and the teacher used a mixture of brake fluid and water. I found myself trying it when I didn't have a spray can of some penetrant handy and seemed to work well. Or maybe coincidence. Just thought I'd share that with you. Any chance of comparing engine oil filters? That would make a great video! Although you will have to make a device to test filters.
Would love to see this, but I dont think there's a big enough difference between filters to really test them in the short term, the only time filter quality becomes relevant is after thousands of miles, and/or under extreme conditions.

but if i got a deal on 5 quarts of oil with a puro...... or had to pay 5 bucks extra to get a WIX..... id run the puro....any day
@@aodhanohoulihan2550 I like to run Purolator on my Jeep simply because their filter is so much larger than anyone else.
Wix is good, Mahle is good. I've used K&N and Mobil1 before simply because they were what was available and I'm sure they're good.
Really the only filter I would avoid is Fram.
I think include automatic transmission fluid if you test more penetrating fluids.

@Project Farm, I would like to see Ed's Red Bore cleaner tested. It's a 1:1:1:1 mix of ATF, Acetone, Kerosene, and Mineral spirits. With the latter two ingredients acting as co-solvents, it should at least stay mixed.

@@avgoalie01 I've always used a 50-50 mix of kerosene and 10W30--and heat. I suppose that all of these homebrew concoctions are just variations on using petroleum fractions.

@@gustav901 you are correct but I did the direct comparison at the US gallon. My figure is based on in the UK most filling stations are at £1.30 a litre, the motorway/highway stations can go over £1.50 a litre.
Here is an idea for a video, do a test to see which lube works best with the UK government screwing us so it'll hurt less 😂😂

steel would just take all the heat out (and oil doesnt have much thermal capacity).. i think better test is blasting rusty nut with torch, let it cool and spray petrating oil
@@exvils put the rusty bolt in a sandblaster and see if that loosens it
So I work in food service and we had a lock that was seized wouldn't turn rusted as heck. Dripped some oil into the keyhole from the fryer and that sucker didn't have a chance.

I've been using Free All at work lately. It seems to work a lot better than PB Blaster. I use it not only for rusty bolts, but also for cleaning up rusty parts. For example, rusted bores in brake caliper brackets. I soak the bore in Free-All and use a bore brush mounted in an impact driver to brush the rust out. Then spray it out with brake cleaner. The bores are shiny when I get done :D

Fascinating test. I did not expect the results from the practical test, but then again - I think your original plan is the right way. Any experienced mechanic would (or at least should) make sure to resupply the penetrant over a period of time. Your vertical creep test clearly shows why, as there is a constant supply from the cups. Once again, awesome work!

How about a test involving really cheap engine products from gas stations or the dollar store? They always seem to have a big lineup of different liquids to clean things in your engine or improve performance. I just look at all of them and assume they're a general waste of money, with the exception of more popular things like iso-heet and seafoam.

A review of steam cleaners would be good, you could also try putting different cleaning solutions in them (vinegar, acetone, soapy water, etc)

I always use fire when I can to get rusty bolts. I've always wondered what temperature is best please try to test this

Project Farm I always heat the bolt and then spray oil on it. I believe the heat draws the oil in.
@@SkyGhost1000 heat removes moisture increasing surface to wick into and lowers the viscosity of the oil. If you're gonna heat, consider using a heavier oil.

If you're starting to rust more bolts can I request that you include another test, identical to the control sample but that you will wire brush the exposed threads before loosening? If this makes more difference than expensive products, that seems like an important finding for the channel!

I noticed on the side of the torque adapter it says its low end range is 147.6 ft lbs. Does that mean anything below that may be inaccurate?

You should test 50/50 atf and aceatone with this it works really good

How about 50/50 mix of Acetone & ATF. I use it and it always seems to outperform any penetrating oil I've ever tried.

You're obviously just a naysayer. You might want to try new things in life and not just make assumptions.
I would have prefered if you left it at a 3 hour time to penetrate. Yes maybe not as realistic but it will help separate the good and the bad, so there is more variation between results.

I find it I often can spray it on the night before if I can plan a project. Though not always possible.
The thing is that most people in the real world aren't gonna wait more than 10 minutes, half an hour at the most.
