I appreciate it. I kind of quit trying to do any of these videos because it takes weeks to script and record and even then my videos don't ever show up in any search results.
@@LordRayken it's because you're not releasing them steadily enough. If you could push out a 10-20 min video every 2 or 3 weeks, I think you would gain traction. Then once you build up a fan base, then try pushing out longer videos. You have talent. It's sad to see that you stopped
What is a point of videogame console altogether? Originally, it was to create specialized low-cost hardware that is good for playing games, and that is cheap enough that everyone can have one at home and then you can make big money by collecting royalties from software sales. The distinctive hardware also lead to distinctive software. Nowadays, development of such hardware has essentially become impossible, as hardware complexity skyrocketed, what you end up with is reuse of existing PC (PS4, Xbox One) or mobile (Switch) hardware, and this convergence has been going on for a while, with original 2001 Xbox being an earlier successful PC hardware reuse example, and Dreamcast came straight off the automotive headunit parts bin, that day's equivalent of today's mobile parts bin. But the royalty is still key. On an open platform such as Windows or Mac or Linux, everybody can distribute their own software and the platform owner isn't getting a cut. But the mobile companies like Google (Android) and Apple (iOS) do! So of course Microsoft's mouth is watering. Microsoft's solution is Windows Store, a unified storefront that sells apps for Windows, for Windows Phone, and for Xbox, and Microsoft is getting a 30% cut, same as what they get off retail Xbox games, and they will be shuffling the effort back and forth. They bet big on Windows store, which is why they gave away Windows 10 upgrade for free for a while. If they can cannibalise the Xbox and move game sales to PC with the Windows Store, they couldn't be happier, saves them the risk and expense of hardware engineering and long-haul marketing. But they can't, or the console gamers having to choose between powerful Windows and accessible Playstation, may tend to choose the latter, that's a lot of royalty or distribution cut lost, and they'd lose the leverage too, because why would anyone use Windows Store then? Uh, do i need to watch the whole video?
I don't know, i've always seeked education, but i also kind of don't want to get bored with things i would already know. I've been there most of the way, i was a consultant for smaller game studios, i worked as an engineer at game engine/middleware/tech companies, and i worked on automotive hardware based on NVidia Tegra among other things.
I was out - I can give you a longer response now. The point of the video was more or less if Xbox wants to be a brand it needs to be a brand. Microsoft seems to be wavering in the middle somewhere and if they want Windows 10 to be a unified games platform they need to hurry up and just do it.
They can't do that though, they don't have the leverage. If Windows PC is the gaming platform, Valve, Uplay, Origin and GOG are the winners, and Microsoft bleeds billions. They need the Xbox. It's a lose-lose situation. They can salvage Xbox by taking an actual loss on the hardware and releasing the best gaming machine ever under $300 - an Xbox One X or derivative, with S getting killed off - and regaining the dough on the software - except antitrust would probably like a word.
Dreamcast actually wasn't that cheap back in the day. Watch the new Jenovi vid; they came across some BOM pricing and it was about $300 - $350 to manufacture Dreamcast over the two years it was on the market. Also crazy enough, Bernie Stolar announced the $199 MSRP in America without Japanese approval; they were originally going to sell it for $249.
Gamepass is hot right now but how sustainable is it? I can still see Microsoft leaving the hardware business and selling Gamepass, on PCs, PlayStations, and Switches in the future.
Bill Gates did a famous interview in Next Generation magazine in 1998 where he stated that Microsoft had no plans on entering the console market. In 1999, he was already talking about the Xbox. Identity crisis from the beginning is correct.
Almost three years later and this is still relevant, maybe moreso than ever. They're STILL pushing the Xbox One branding in a way since the new consoles continue the X and S crap, and the UI on the new systems is EXACTLY the same as on Xbox One! I'd say it's even worst now because they're pushing GamePass and like you said, if it's also on PC (which it is), why not simply get it there, especially since they're also pushing Xcloud everywhere? Xbox fanboys can't see that Microsoft's basically trying to be sly about exiting the console market as a platform holder, but that's exactly what they're doing. They still got Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo as timed PS5 exclusives; you mean to tell me they couldn't in ANY way renegotiate those contracts to drop the exclusivity since their new consoles need all the exclusives they can get? Nah. Pretty sad; OG Xbox and the 360 were really good systems but I think Sega's guiding presence and people like Seamus Blackley, J Allard and Peter Moore being there were the big reasons they did as well as they did. It's been a big downward slope since then and Phil Spencer is way more interested in GamePass and Xcloud than he is about Xbox as a console brand.
I think you're totally right. If this was any other company, they would have exited the console market, but because they have the deep pockets of Microsoft and the Gamepass/Xbox Live brand, they can keep their consoles going when in reality they want people on PC and Windows. Just as an edit, it's even more apparent that they basically built a PC as their next gen console with no real changes to UI or software.
@@LordRayken That's pretty much the case, they've even been boasting as much claiming "Full RDNA2" with AMD, what that really just includes DX12U stuff you can do a different way, and PC API stuff that consoles probably don't really need (but their servers will). They even made Series X APU for dual-purpose in consoles and their Azure servers. Microsoft's one of the only companies in the world that can eat costs on shrinking install base of sold consoles, because they just want as many people on GamePass as possible. Their own showcase in July was more about GamePass than the Series X. I'm still looking forward to a lot of their 1P games but I'm just gonna play them on PC most likely. Also because of this I don't think they're gonna be innovative on unique hardware or I/O to push console gaming forward because they'll always want PC and now mobile markets to not get left out. It's kinda sad but I'll still hold on to memories of when they were at their peak with Xbox as a console gaming brand with OG Xbox and 360 especially.
I don't think Xbox doesn't have an identity crisis. I think play anywhere is revolutionary. For years people have complained about gaming systems being closed off and there respective companies dictating how gamers play and what to do. Finally we get to a place where we get a semblance of choice and for me makes me even more loyal to the Microsoft Xbox brand. The pc vs Xbox to me is a moot point because they are still Microsoft. Xbox one is plug and play so some casual family comes into Wal-Mart they don't need to know how to build a gaming pc when they buy an Xbox I think the reason there's a large disparage between the sales figures is that Xbox doesn't have a good market share in Japan And FYI if you want to look non biased and not turn people off you should probably not show images like in 10:28 because a lot of people will automatically call you a Playstation fan and go to another video
