Sounds like Randy was practicing guitar on those days he skipped school. I'm glad he did.
I love it, sweatin the kid about gym attendance when he’s busy being one of the best pickers in the world.
He’s not worried about gym, he’s got gigs at the Opry!
Guess you’re right, how worried can he be when he arrives at school 2 hours late, carrying no books, followed by a film crew, and smoking a cig.
😅 right?
Sorry teach, I’d rather jam with Joanie than hit the gym 😎
Randy clearly spent every second he could picking and singing! RIP.
Yes he did. Plus he was a really quality person.

I landed on this totally by accident. What a wonderful piece of music history to have stumbled upon. Early genius!
I rarely attended highschool beyond the 9th grade and only went to choir class, art class and band where I excelled. Obviously, I could not graduate with just those classes carrying me. When I was 23 I acquired a GED and went on to college where I graduated with a 3.8 GPA and now am a successful business owner.
Highschool is a complete waste of time. It's an institution to condition an authoritarian ruled society that cannot think for itself. What you learn in school (and college) can be found in libraries and now, the internet. You can have all the degrees you want, but in the end, it's all how you apply yourself.
I agree. Shool should be a place to go when your 14 or 15 when you want to learn something. They only teach you what to learn not how to learn.
Very well said.
I always loved his acoustic bluegrass sound.
Me too.

Rest in peace Randy... back with Pops... I just so happened to have found your absolutely outstanding talent and I sure will squeeze as much drops I can from your magnificent pool of work.👏🏽
you know your good when even you boot has good tone!
Rest In Peace, Randy. You will be greatly missed...
Someday society will get priorities straight. Lead a child into his strengths. No one is cut from the same cloth. Train a musician to be an athlete, and he will be a bad one, and miss his true calling. Etc. etc. etc.
Glad you got this on film, he was such a great guitarist!
Rest In Peace you left to soon
EARL Scruggs rescue was my 1st experience in the mid 70s ...with randy... rip
Randy, I didn't even know you were ill. I'll see you in heaven. 😔
RIP Randy Scruggs (August 3, 1953 - April 17, 2018)
Great picking. RIP Randy.
I saw "The Earl Scruggs Revue" live way back in the 70s . He was a stunningly impressive guitar player who could pull electric guitar sounds from an acoustic. The band was called "The Earl Scruggs Revue" but it was the Randy Scruggs show!
RIP Randy.
Hi Randy, remember when you visited NYC years ago. We picked a few tunes together and you were fantastic and great to be with...Jack Baker NYC
I remember this from the Circle Album. I learned a lot from Randy on Guitar off that album. His version of "Clouds" by Joni Mitchell was really beautiful.
I absolutely hated school! Don't blame anybody for skipping school!
His picking was no ''fox pass''. I hear touches of Doc Watson in there.
Randy's dad and Doc were good friends, so I'm sure you are right
Touches? It's unmistakable. Delmores too
"That's no man, that's my wife" haha. You've made a terrific faux pas.....yes, I'd say so.
Really love all your videos. U have an eye for true dignity and a lot of repect
Sad that he’s gone way too soon. Valerie Smith said at a recent festival that Randy passed away due to Covid complications-R.I.P. brother.
Earl Scruggs great son
A master artist
@gareof Randy has made it on his own as well away from his father's wealth. He writes music, owns a record production company, plays on sessions still. He is knows by his last name, but he is also well known for his own work in Nashville. he and his brother Gary are well known musicians, not to mention some of the best.
Amazing picking
His guitar sound is amazing
Boy knew he was destined for greatness
Any kin to earl,,, the banjo picker,,,
Absolutely. His son, Randy.
Great little film!
amazing and hilarious video. reminds me a lot of the bible thumping high school in southern AL i graduated from in 2016. much more concerned with sports than arts and music, our mascots were even the rams as well.
that faux pass scene kills me every time. too funny
Geez-how do you get that good at such an early age? Impressive!
Natural
*****
Not to be confused with natural light
Having Earl Scruggs as your father. Might've been a slight boon.
Indeed
Brilliant performance :-)

I love it keep em comin.
Bravo!
Young'un dosent need to go to school that's clear... that acoustic by the way... seriously rich... and them blue grass players all use heavy strings for definite

With talent like that, who needs school?

The look at 2:21 is pure style.
sometimes the Lord sends us freaks of nature and then takes them away
Just like Clarence White
Way up on my best video list. He's below average in gym....cut to him ripping it up on the guitar!!
Wow, great picken !!!

This could make a good "shot". Possibly you could edit it if its too long. Thank you David.
thank you for the suggestion.

Now, to hep you remember how to say "faux pas," just think of when you do your chores. Why do you do them? Fo' Pa!
Love this snippet of a video but don't have $59.00 to spend on a DVD. $59.00!!! what on earth!!! Maybe you would sell more for $19.99. Do I get the TV rights along with the purchase since it costs so much???
Dear Mort: I can certainly sympathize with your feelings about the price and the fact that you don't have the money. Since you asked, let me give you a sense of the marketplace I am in. Those who sell their videos for $19.99 have made their money somewhere else and are now distributing via DVD or streaming to get additional cash. I am independent filmmaker who makes my money only from the films have I sell this way, including rights, which I then used to support myself and to make more films as you can see if you look at films on this, my UA-cam channel. I do not understand your question about TV rights. Are you interested in acquiring those rights?
Best New Year's regards

Besides that - Where else can you find a compilation like this piece of history with all those musicians at the top of their game ?
A good many of them are gone from this earth now, and to see them as they were - alive and pickin' - is priceless actually.
So MortTheCat - Stop yer Yowlin' and appreciate that something like this is even available at all !
I guess he has taken a look at Doc Watson.
Sheeesh
Revue
Any chance to see this without them talking in between??
Dear Patrik: I will answer your question but I am not sure it will satisfy you. I am making a movie about someone. The music is wonderful that Randy place. But I chose to put it into a social comment on the life he was living as a teenager in Nashville Tennessee and how he felt about it way back then. So the talking in between is a part of my expression for that moment in time in this wonderfully talented artist. You can find him on UA-cam picking that guitar magnificently. But you won't find another movie quite like mine. Thank you for your comment.

David Hoffman dont get me wrong i love this clip and also the documentery, would Love to hear this exact same version as mp3 format. What Martin is this btw? 00-42?
Martin Scruggs RIP
@@Flatpicknationit’s prolly a 000-42, man it looks incredible with that wild ass pickguard.
Mr Hoffman, is he playing a particular tune or is he just freestyling?
He is playing Black Mountain Rag.

Fox pass, faux pas.
Rebel Rouser
Sounds like you're not followin me, than which is no greater sin
This documentary is on amazon for $60. Is that right ??
Randy sorry bout your daddy.
He gone now too
what kind of guitar is that ?, it has a Martin neck but what looks like a Gibson body, if any one can tell me I would appreciate it, thanks, Peace.
Keiran Bradley This guitar is definitely a Martin. The "style 45" abalone headstock inlay, which is Martins block letter inlay, is a dead giveaway. As for the exact model, it looks like a 00-42 or a 000-42, but it could even be a 00-45 or 000-45. It's hard to tell exactly which model, but all of the ones I mentioned are going to sound and look very similar. They are relatively close in size, which is why it's difficult to tell exactly which one it is, but it's definitely of the "42" or "45" variety. You can see all of the abalone inlay in the top and around the fingerboard extension. Actually, it could possibly be an OM sized 42. somewhere along the line, looks like someone changed out the pickguard, which is probably what's giving off the Gibson vibe. Hope this helps.
+japickrell Thanks, I was thinking along the same lines, Peace
Is he Earls son?
Yes
Thanks, Australian and dont get all the news..
That's the next level above bein a vegetable.
It's not for you to say what is cussin or what you ought to be doin, that is the sin of rebellion. Even Jesus didn't decide for himself what he was goin to do, but obeyed, and when he wasn't there the apostles were his surrogates
You are not at the level of direct contact with the Master, but can be in a short time if you want that
haha scripture reading in public school?
Don’t trim your hair. Nor your beard. Stay in touch with Mother Nature
"Take it easy on the philosophy" no. You learn to appreciate the difference, between Anglo-Saxon played music, and foreign-played.
And quit cussin or else we won't allow you on our planet any longer.
Purdy darned good. You know, if Tony Rice or some of the others played the same, they would play it just as well, but I wouldn't want to hear it. There is a difference between skill and bein an Anglo Saxon. (Angels sons of Isaac - "In Isaac will your name be called". Anglo Saxon dopers and cultural crossovers who have truck with L.A. lose their Anglo Saxonness.
You are a disgraceful human being to be prejudiced on race alone. Your silly references to scripture (especially when that race didn't even exist at the time) also reveal your stupidity. You should worry about improving your soul rather than someone else playing a tune.
🙄😳😩🤡
RIP Randy.
